Summary

In Gilded, Marissa Meyer, #1 New York Times bestselling author, returns to the fairytale world with this haunting retelling of Rumpelstiltskin

Long ago cursed by the god of lies, a poor miller's daughter has developed a talent for spinning stories that are fantastical and spellbinding and entirely untrue。

Or so everyone believes。

When one of Serilda's outlandish tales draws the attention of the sinister Erlking and his undead hunters, she finds herself swept away into a grim world where ghouls and phantoms prowl the earth and hollow-eyed ravens track her every move。 The king orders Serilda to complete the impossible task of spinning straw into gold, or be killed for telling falsehoods。 In her desperation, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious boy to her aid。 He agrees to help her… for a price。 Love isn't meant to be part of the bargain。

Soon Serilda realizes that there is more than one secret hidden in the castle walls, including an ancient curse that must be broken if she hopes to end the tyranny of the king and his wild hunt forever。

Gilded started off so strong and I loved the dark elements。 I feel like there was no need for this to be 500 pages and could’ve been shorten to 300-350 pages。 I’m also surprised this is going to be a duology because it could’ve thrived as a stand-alone。

Gilded ✨✨✨✨✨ 5 glittering gold stars! I was enthralled from the beginning to the very end。 Gilded is a very dark, very magical (and at times heartbreaking) Grimm retelling of Rumpelstilskin - a beautiful story full of twists and turns, fabulous characters, an immersive setting and intriguing German folklore。 I love Rumpelstilskin and adore Marissa Meyer’s way of spinning traditional fairytales and turning them into gold and this book went above and beyond all my expectations! ꧂Cursed by the god Gilded ✨✨✨✨✨ 5 glittering gold stars! It was not what I expected! I didn’t want it to stop there。 I feel like Alice falling down the rabbit hole。 It’s such a gorgeous, addictive reimagining of Rumplestiltskin and I need to keep reading。 Please give me the next few chapters Marissa Meyer, please! 。。。more

I really, really wanted to love this。 But I think it would have been better in 1 book, instead of 2。 This was really long for only getting as far as it has gotten thus far。

3。5⭐️This was my least favorite Marissa Meyer book but it was pretty good for everything she brought to the table for a Rumpelstiltskin retelling。 She’s still the reigning retelling queen of my dreams and I can’t wait for Cursed!!!🥰❤️

(3。5 Stars) Marissa Meyer's work is pretty touch and go for me。 I love her science fiction but not so much her fantasy。 Gilded was really good in the first third of the story, but the last two thirds went really slowly。 I think the hardest part for me was getting accepting the fact that she was literally dating Rumplestiltskin。 If will say though that I think this book would improve on the re-read, which I'm willing to do because I liked the ending。 (3。5 Stars) Marissa Meyer's work is pretty touch and go for me。 I love her science fiction but not so much her fantasy。 Gilded was really good in the first third of the story, but the last two thirds went really slowly。 I think the hardest part for me was getting accepting the fact that she was literally dating Rumplestiltskin。 If will say though that I think this book would improve on the re-read, which I'm willing to do because I liked the ending。 。。。more

Magical, dark, and amazing。 Meyer mixed so much German folktale together into a story I could not put down。 Rumpelstiltskin retelling with a girl, gold, and ghosts。 I did go into this knowing next to nothing and with no expectations - so highly recommend if you love Meyer’s other works。 Sequel coming in 2022 - can’t wait。

“Sometimes superstitions are all that we have been given by the gods in order to make sense of our world。 Superstitions … and stories。”So here’s the thing regarding my feelings about Marissa Meyer: I love her。 When it comes to storytelling she can do no wrong。 When it comes to fairytale retellings she excels。 When it comes to writing and voice she weaves and enchants。 And Gilded was no exception。 I went into it without reading the synopsis, because honestly it’s Marissa, she’s an all time fave a “Sometimes superstitions are all that we have been given by the gods in order to make sense of our world。 Superstitions … and stories。”So here’s the thing regarding my feelings about Marissa Meyer: I love her。 When it comes to storytelling she can do no wrong。 When it comes to fairytale retellings she excels。 When it comes to writing and voice she weaves and enchants。 And Gilded was no exception。 I went into it without reading the synopsis, because honestly it’s Marissa, she’s an all time fave and I really don’t need a preview of what’s to come as I know it’s going to be epic。 And epic ‘twas was。 If you’re obsessed with dark fairytales as I am then this is the one for you。 With vivid descriptions of imagery that’s lush and atmospheric and a character with a knack for storytelling that was vibrant and rich- I was already in love。 Then we met the Erlking, with all that he entails, and Gild and slowly started the becoming of what is now my favorite Marissa Meyer book to date。 If it wasn’t the intoxicating atmosphere of the novel, then it was surely the charismatic and alluring characters, but if it wasn’t them, then it was the absolutely witty and hysterical dialogue that had me cackling- and if it wasn’t that then it was surely the bewitching storytelling。 All this to say, I absolutely adore Gilded and hope everyone is just as obsessed with it as I am。 。。。more

Despite a slow start (and a slow middle), this book ended off strongly enough that I'd like to continue in the series。 Serilda isn't exactly the most compelling of main characters but she definitely isn't your typical meek YA female heroin。 One of the things that did really throw me off was that every character, including a 5 year old, had the exact same vocabulary。 They all used big pretentious words。。。 words that not everyone in a small, uneducated town would know。 Anyway, an interesting take Despite a slow start (and a slow middle), this book ended off strongly enough that I'd like to continue in the series。 Serilda isn't exactly the most compelling of main characters but she definitely isn't your typical meek YA female heroin。 One of the things that did really throw me off was that every character, including a 5 year old, had the exact same vocabulary。 They all used big pretentious words。。。 words that not everyone in a small, uneducated town would know。 Anyway, an interesting take on Rumpelstiltskin, but not its not anything particularly new in the YA genre, you know? 。。。more

The story is a great weaving of a Rumpelstiltskin retelling with original plotlines。 I loved the incorporation of so much German and Slavic folklore。 The ending felt a little off since it started to shift more toward the original storylines without fully wrapping up the Rumpelstiltskin part, but I enjoyed the ride and am greatly looking forward to the sequel。

Gilded by Marissa Meyer just released on 11/2/21 and I hope you run and pick it up。 This is the first book by Meyers that I’ve read in a physical format and it is just as magical as the audiobooks! I do plan to listen as well because I’m so attached to this story! I feel like I could talk about this book for hours, but would give all the spoilers。 All I know is I LOVE Serilda, she may be one of my favorite characters ever。 I can’t wait for you all to read this one, and I’ll be counting down the Gilded by Marissa Meyer just released on 11/2/21 and I hope you run and pick it up。 This is the first book by Meyers that I’ve read in a physical format and it is just as magical as the audiobooks! I am on the fence with fairy tale retellings some I love and a lot are boring or worse badly done。 Let me tell you this one did not disappoint and is definitely in the love category! I was very excited for this book, so much so that I pre-ordered it, which I never do。 I think that fairytale retellings are where Marissa Meyer shines, so I put a lot of hope into it。 Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to The Lunar Chronicles or Heartless。 Part of this might be due to the German village aesthetic, which isn't usually one I care particularly for。 However, the characters also weren't quite as entrancing as usual and the story was a little repetitive in a few parts。 I think it I was very excited for this book, so much so that I pre-ordered it, which I never do。 I think that fairytale retellings are where Marissa Meyer shines, so I put a lot of hope into it。 Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to The Lunar Chronicles or Heartless。 Part of this might be due to the German village aesthetic, which isn't usually one I care particularly for。 However, the characters also weren't quite as entrancing as usual and the story was a little repetitive in a few parts。 I think it would have also been stronger if it stuck more closely to the original Rumpelstiltskin tale。That said, I still really liked it and I'm interested to see what happens in the next book。 。。。more

Mind blownMarissa Meyer has once again weaved a mind blowing retelling! This time she tackles Rumplestiltskin, but turns it on it’s head (avoiding spoilers so keeping this vague)。 Much like the known tale, we have our main character who is forced to spin gold, yet she finds help in a “poltergeist” whose true name is a central mystery to this story。 We also have a very detestable villain, who becomes more detestable as the story progresses。 Meyer also weaves in a parallel story, which makes sense Mind blownMarissa Meyer has once again weaved a mind blowing retelling! A wonderful fairytale retelling of Rumpelstiltskin by author Marissa Meyer。I listened to an author chat with Meyer, where she said the story of Rumpelstiltskin stayed with her into adulthood。 She often wondered about the king and how the daughter could stand to be married to the man who threatened her with death, lest she spin straw into gold。Feeling pretty grateful that Meyer asked these questions, because out of it was born Gilded, her fairytale retelling of Rumpelstiltskin。I enjoy fairytales A wonderful fairytale retelling of Rumpelstiltskin by author Marissa Meyer。I listened to an author chat with Meyer, where she said the story of Rumpelstiltskin stayed with her into adulthood。 She often wondered about the king and how the daughter could stand to be married to the man who threatened her with death, lest she spin straw into gold。Feeling pretty grateful that Meyer asked these questions, because out of it was born Gilded, her fairytale retelling of Rumpelstiltskin。I enjoy fairytales a great deal and Gilded is fascinating。 So creatively done, with twists and turns and unexpected forays into the imagination of the author。 The audiobook narration by Rebecca Soler is well done, and I understand she’s narrated most, if not all of Meyer’s books? In the author chat I listened to, Meyer interviewed Soler, who said you were going to want to stay up all night to finish Gilded。The last 10% of the book had me hopping up and down in excitement。 I couldn’t wait to finish the book, yet didn’t want to finish it at the same time… know what I mean?
