Summary

"Bravo, Mr。 Finch, and keep them coming! More Lenox, please。" —Louise Penny, bestselling author of A Better Man

From bestselling author Charles Finch comes the third and final in a prequel trilogy to his lauded Charles Lenox series。

London, 1855。 A young and eager Charles Lenox faces his toughest case yet: a murder without a single clue。 Slumped in a third-class car at Paddington Station is the body of a handsome young gentleman。 He has no luggage, empty pockets, and no sign of identification on his person。 And putting together the clues to the mystery of the man’s identity only raises more questions, when Lenox discovers that the crime has a significant connection to America。

As he seeks to solve this impossible case, the young Lenox must confront an equally troublesome problem in his personal life。 Kitty Ashbrook, beautiful and cultured, appears to be his soulmate—but love comes with obstacles of its own。 In tandem, this fiendish early case and passionate, deeply felt affair will irrevocably shape the brilliant detective and thoughtful gentleman Lenox is destined to become。

Written in Charles Finch’s unmistakably witty and graceful voice, The Last Passenger is a cunning, thrilling, and deeply satisfying conclusion to this trilogy of prequels to his bestselling Charles Lenox series。

Editor Reviews

Praise for The Last Passenger:

“Smashing。。。That’s the charm of Finch’s style and [Lenox’s] own manner of sleuthing — a brilliant display of brainy deduction。。。classy writing and beguiling details。” —The New York Times Book Review

"No mystery writer except perhaps Anne Perry is as successful as Charles Finch at evoking the atmosphere of Victorian London。" —The Washington Post

“Seriously satisfying。” —AirMail

“Avid mystery readers will enjoy Lenox’s thorough review of his sleuthing process…choose this if you revel in atmosphere。” —Kirkus Reviews

“This tightly plotted mystery…is rich in historical detail…[Lenox] coming into his own as a detective is a delight。” —Booklist

"Finch effectively integrates the politics of the time, including pre–Civil War tensions in America。。。 a clever murder puzzle。 Anne Perry and David Dickinson fans will be satisfied。" —Publishers Weekly

"Finch’s plotting is excellent, his characters well developed, but it is his prose that truly shines。 He evokes the writing style of 19th-century English authors—Wilkie Collins jumps to mind—lending a degree of authenticity to the narrative found in comparatively few historical novels。 Finch also incorporates then-contemporary international politics, especially the burgeoning abolitionist movement in the U。S。, in this exceptional and atmospheric mystery。" —Bookpage

“Atmospheric。” —Seattle Times

“Finch smoothly integrates the era’s politics, fashion, culture and views, including how American issues have infiltrated British society。 [He] also cleverly delves into Lenox’s personality, which has fueled this beloved series。” —Florida Sun-Sentinel

“Finch outdoes himself in the latest Charles Lenox mystery…[he] superbly weaves facts, interesting historical tidbits and emotions in a book so rich one hates to see it end。” —Cleveland Plain-Dealer

"A well-written mystery that moves quickly。。。[provides] insight into European politics vis-a-vis the United States just prior to the American Civil War。" —Mystery Scene Magazine

Praise for The Vanishing Man:

“Fiction readers who crush on blue-blooded British detectives will fall hard for Victorian-era sleuth Charles Lenox。” —The Washington Post

"Finch's nimble prose, edged with humor, makes this twelfth in the Charles Lenox series a pure delight。" —Booklist (starred review)

"Rich in period minutiae。。。unveils the frightening power of the uppermost classes。" —Kirkus Reviews

Praise for
The Woman in the Water:

"A cunning mystery。"—The New York Times Book Review

"Finch is an elegant stylist。。。a persuasive portrait of Victorian England。"—The Washington Post

“Finch does a wonderful job of re-creating the atmosphere of mid-19th-century England; his characters are crisply drawn and believable。 It’s wonderful to see the neophyte Lenox develop the skills for which he becomes renowned in later books。 An excellent addition to an already terrific series。” —Library Journal (starred)

“With its splendidly drawn characters and brisk, supple prose, this can be either an inviting introduction to those new to Finch’s accomplished series or a winning addition to the canon for established fans。” —Booklist (starred)

“Lenox has officially reached the big leagues—the conclusion waiting for him is nothing short of chilling。 A case with enough momentum to recharge this series and grab new readers with its pull。” —Kirkus Reviews

I've enjoyed every book in the Charles Lenox since I picked one up and read it。 I've since read the series。I like the writing, the storyline and the characters。 I enjoy the author's descriptions of old London, the characters dress and mannerisms。 I like the latest books which are prequels of Lenox's early days as a detective。 I'm looking forward to the next book! Another hit at bat for Charles Finch。The quality of this series is consistently good: writing, plotting and most of all, how well the players are drawn, whether they have major or supporting roles, or make a single appearance。 Eloquent descriptions of time and place woven into well-plotted stories。 Enjoyable too, is that the author keeps the main characters growing and evolving。"Passenger" is my favorite of the prequels。 Another hit at bat for Charles Finch。The quality of this series is consistently good: writing, plotting and most of all, how well the players are drawn, whether they have major or supporting roles, or make a single appearance。 Eloquent descriptions of time and place woven into well-plotted stories。 Enjoyable too, is that the author keeps the main characters growing and evolving。"Passenger" is my favorite of the prequels。 。。。more

This third prequel to the Charles Lenox novels was excellent except for one glaring chronological error that distracted me from the story over and over。 In the first sentence we are told that it is October, 1855。 At this time England was at war in the Crimea, yet no mention is made of it even though a character is in the Army。 In fact at one point this character says of the future “by then we may be at war。” Finch is usually quite accurate in his history, so it is doubly distracting to find such This third prequel to the Charles Lenox novels was excellent except for one glaring chronological error that distracted me from the story over and over。 In the first sentence we are told that it is October, 1855。 At this time England was at war in the Crimea, yet no mention is made of it even though a character is in the Army。 In fact at one point this character says of the future “by then we may be at war。” Finch is usually quite accurate in his history, so it is doubly distracting to find such anachronism in his work。 But aside from that, the characters, setting, and plot were as good as his other books that I’ve read。 。。。more

I really enjoyed the third and final prequel to the Charles Lenox series。 I needed a cozy series after reading some violent stuff。

I love every book in this series。 The author is even adding more historical trivia, as the series progresses, which I really like。 Can't believe the BBC hasn't made a production of this yet。 I love every book in this series。 The author is even adding more historical trivia, as the series progresses, which I really like。 Can't believe the BBC hasn't made a production of this yet。 。。。more

Solid addition to the series with a more serious subject—the slave trade—than most。

After 13 books in this series, I feel like the primary characters are old friends and I would like Charles Lenox very much in person!

Another good Sherlockian series。 Charles Lenox, second son of someone high up, scandalously using his skills and smarts to solve crimes, instead of pandering to the society muckety-mucks。 Torn between his silver spoon world and his passion for detective work, Charles lives a somewhat solitary life as an outsider。 The mysteries are intriguing and complicated, but Charles always figures them out。 An added bonus is the valet and "best friend", far beneath Charles in status, but his equal in intelli Another good Sherlockian series。 Charles Lenox, second son of someone high up, scandalously using his skills and smarts to solve crimes, instead of pandering to the society muckety-mucks。 Torn between his silver spoon world and his passion for detective work, Charles lives a somewhat solitary life as an outsider。 The mysteries are intriguing and complicated, but Charles always figures them out。 An added bonus is the valet and "best friend", far beneath Charles in status, but his equal in intelligence and good sense。 。。。more

Great mystery story Not sure if I have read any other books by Finch but I will be looking for them。 Loved all the English details。

Wonderful prequel of a young Charles Lenox。 A peek into his relationship with Lady Jane and her husband Deere, and an intriguing murder of a young man on a train。

Charles Finch writes a good mystery with Charles Lenox as his amateur sleuth。

THE LAST PASSENGER, set after the 1834 abolition and just before the Civil War。 It popped up on the iPad, by chance but appropriately, with its stark look at the realities of slavery and the corruption that accompanied it。 I'd love to go back to a past book club meeting and recommend it to the woman who insisted that GONE WITH THE WIND was accurate in its portrayal of happy enslaved persons。 Abraham Lincoln said you can't keep another man down without staying down as well。 We should all strive t THE LAST PASSENGER, set after the 1834 abolition and just before the Civil War。 It popped up on the iPad, by chance but appropriately, with its stark look at the realities of slavery and the corruption that accompanied it。 I'd love to go back to a past book club meeting and recommend it to the woman who insisted that GONE WITH THE WIND was accurate in its portrayal of happy enslaved persons。 Abraham Lincoln said you can't keep another man down without staying down as well。 We should all strive to rise, to go high。 。。。more

I like the mystery part, but even more, I enjoy Charles Lenox, Graham, Lady Jane, and even old London itself as characters。

According to Amazon, this is the last in a prequel trilogy。 Which is a bit of a shame, as I’ve enjoyed seeing young Lenox find his way in the world before he’s quite established himself。 If you’re familiar with the series, the tragic event in young Lady Jane’s life takes place in this book。 For fear of spoilers, that’s all I’m saying。

Once again an intriguing tale。When a book keeps me guessing for quite awhile I am very happy, I have forged a relationship with the characters and like watching them evolve。 Definitely worth reading。

For me, this book introduced me to Charles Lennox, a very charming, humble and able detective。 Set pre-Civil War but in London put a perspective of an outside society viewing our own inside problems and haunted me knowing what was coming in the next 10 years。 I will read whatever follows hoping Charles finds love that he can call his own。 The fact that I care reflects my enjoyment of the book。

George

Another book to set up characters and relationships of Lenox and those around him。 A book where you hesitate to stop reading。 When will we see inspector Cobb again and what will the nature of the mystery or intrigue that brings them together? A trip to America to solve a crime? I look forward to the the announcement of Charles Finch’s next Charles Lenox escapade Charles Finch is a favorite。

Detective verhaal in de jaren 1850。 Boek begon wel leuk, luchtige toon, eens iets anders。 Op het einde verloor het wat mijn aandacht。

These Charles Lenox prequels are not a patch on the originals。 One can hardly believe that the same author wrote both the latter three prequels, and the rest of the Charles Lenox cannon。 The last two were appalling, and it was all I could do not to toss them aside unfinished。 I won't go into detail regarding what I thought went wrong with these, but he worst of it were the Americanisms。 It was as though the writer - clearly an american - had absolutely no idea of Victorian London at all, or the These Charles Lenox prequels are not a patch on the originals。 One can hardly believe that the same author wrote both the latter three prequels, and the rest of the Charles Lenox cannon。 The last two were appalling, and it was all I could do not to toss them aside unfinished。 I won't go into detail regarding what I thought went wrong with these, but he worst of it were the Americanisms。 It was as though the writer - clearly an american - had absolutely no idea of Victorian London at all, or the aristocracy。 There seemed no attempt whatsoever to even attempt to invoke the flavour and atmosphere of Victorian London。 We might just as well have read a book about New York。 。。。more

A historical novel/ mystery, one of a series, set in England in the mid 1800s。 The main character, Charles Lenox, who enjoys the privileges of a man of means, fills his time solving crimes。 He has wit and class and is earnest in his pursuit of the life of a detective。 The mystery, itself, held no interest for me(and I generally love a good mystery)。 What fascinated me was the tidbits of history, the descriptions of word origins, and the foreshadowing of the Civil War in America。 Charles’ life an A historical novel/ mystery, one of a series, set in England in the mid 1800s。 The main character, Charles Lenox, who enjoys the privileges of a man of means, fills his time solving crimes。 He has wit and class and is earnest in his pursuit of the life of a detective。 The mystery, itself, held no interest for me(and I generally love a good mystery)。 What fascinated me was the tidbits of history, the descriptions of word origins, and the foreshadowing of the Civil War in America。 Charles’ life and the society he lives in is the real story here。 I’m not compelled to read anymore of the series, but I admired the research done for this book and the writer’s talent for dialog。 。。。more
