Summary

Librarian's note: There is an Alternate Cover Edition for this edition of this book here

In 1965, after being rejected by more than a dozen publishing houses, a book called "Dune" was brought out by the Chilton Book Company。 Its respected author, journalist Frank Herbert, had written "Dune" with nothing more in mind than to entertain his readers with the telling of a particularly complex story, one which had occupied his thoughts for more than six years。 No one - not Herbert, not Chilton, not the science fiction community at the time - had any idea that "Dune" would be adopted and read by successive generations with a fervor bordering on cult worship。 Or that it would prove to be merely the first of what have now become five international bestsellers about a desert world of the future - the planet Arrakis, called Dune。

THIS IS A MASTERPIECE! I am so happy I finished this science fiction novel before I watched the film。 This novel had several themes: ‘mythology, religion, politics, imperialism, environmentalism and the nature of power’ Herbert truly set such a high standard and foundation for the science fiction community and novels。

Honestly I hate this book and am halfway through it and can’t finish it。

Honestly one of the best books ever。 It's hard to read and can be boring at times, but it's totally worth it。 All the characters are just *chefs kiss*。 No character was really a flat character, they almost always had a change of some sort。 And the world building? AHHH it's so good。 Honestly one of the best examples of world building in my opinion。 Honestly one of the best books ever。 It's hard to read and can be boring at times, but it's totally worth it。 All the characters are just *chefs kiss*。 No character was really a flat character, they almost always had a change of some sort。 And the world building? Foundation trilogy by Isaac Asimov is a better sci-fi but it is a still-impressive story and world。 Good experience。

FYI, my rating system is:5 stars: I literally can't stop reading this book。 A "page turner" as it were。4 stars: I always look forward to sitting down to read this book。3 stars: Not super compelling, but has some interesting nugget that's keeping me at least mildly interested。2 stars: Not that good, possibly even bad, but I will finish it anyway, because I'm not a quitter (it's a sickness)。1 stars: Not even my psychological compulsion to finish everything I start can overcome the terribleness of FYI, my rating system is:5 stars: I literally can't stop reading this book。 A "page turner" as it were。4 stars: I always look forward to sitting down to read this book。3 stars: Not super compelling, but has some interesting nugget that's keeping me at least mildly interested。2 stars: Not that good, possibly even bad, but I will finish it anyway, because I'm not a quitter (it's a sickness)。1 stars: Not even my psychological compulsion to finish everything I start can overcome the terribleness of this book (very rare)。 。。。more

DNF’d after 100 pages。 This book is really easy to read so it has that going for it, but I just don’t like it。 I don’t know if it’s fair to judge an 800-page book by its first 100 pages but I just couldn’t get myself to read anymore。 The book takes itself too seriously or something and I don’t like the tone of it。 Maybe I’ll try again some other time。

Listen。 Picking up a hefty science fiction novel is not my typical M。O。 I resisted reading Dune for as long as I could, but I decided to read it prior to the release of the new movie。 Every logical part of my brain wanted to hate it and dismiss it as convoluted literature for philosophy bros, but I LOVED it。 Herbert creates a world that is so rich and full of nuance。 Like any good piece of literature, Dune, its characters, and its themes mean something different to everyone。 Even more than the i Listen。 Picking up a hefty science fiction novel is not my typical M。O。 I resisted reading Dune for as long as I could, but I decided to read it prior to the release of the new movie。 Every logical part of my brain wanted to hate it and dismiss it as convoluted literature for philosophy bros, but I LOVED it。 Herbert creates a world that is so rich and full of nuance。 Like any good piece of literature, Dune, its characters, and its themes mean something different to everyone。 Even more than the incredible setting, I found myself drawn to the characters, each of their unique journeys, and the lessons learned by the reader through each of them。 Paul is an incredibly compelling hero, and I really think that it was the development of Paul that made me fall in love with the book and the world。 。。。more

I first read this in High School and then again in college along with the rest of the series。 But after seeing the movie Saturday I decided it was time for a reread。 It was excellent。I remember initially struggling with the political play when I first read it, but now I guess with maturity it all became clear。 The intricacies of this book are such that you discover new things with each rereading。 I can't recommend it enough。 <3 Now on to reading the rest of the series! The voices were phenomenal but I drew out the listening too long。 I think I would have liked it better if I didn’t take such long breaks。 Won’t read the sequels though。

I was initially concerned I might remember too much of this book, but the hilarity of that conceit quickly became clear。 On the one hand, the loss of fear as an adult is a sad thing, the sandworms made no impact on me at all and I remember how viscerally terrifying they were 2 decades ago, how their shadow hung over every next page never letting me relax into a character's apparent security。 On the other hand, I'm quite sure I properly understood absolutely none of the complex world-building bac I was initially concerned I might remember too much of this book, but the hilarity of that conceit quickly became clear。 On the one hand, the loss of fear as an adult is a sad thing, the sandworms made no impact on me at all and I remember how viscerally terrifying they were 2 decades ago, how their shadow hung over every next page never letting me relax into a character's apparent security。 On the other hand, I'm quite sure I properly understood absolutely none of the complex world-building back then, reducing the book to a Jurassic Park: Annelid Apocalypse。 With the worms reinstated to their role as adding beautiful texture to the world, I was blown away by this re-read and saw all the best and true-fantasy parts of ASoIaF and WoT introduced here with such clarity and brevity。 。。。more

The sum is greater here than its parts - the vision rises above the imho rather clunky omniscient narrator and a somewhat unorganic, abrupt plot。 But the worlbuilding - normally nothing I value that much - is really remarcable, at least for its day, and the themes were and still are relevant。 Ad to that this massive WH40k feeling (I know I know, it's the other way around) and you got yourself a quite enjoyable read。 The sum is greater here than its parts - the vision rises above the imho rather clunky omniscient narrator and a somewhat unorganic, abrupt plot。 But the worlbuilding - normally nothing I value that much - is really remarcable, at least for its day, and the themes were and still are relevant。 Ad to that this massive WH40k feeling (I know I know, it's the other way around) and you got yourself a quite enjoyable read。 。。。more

I’m not a huge a sci-fi reader, but I wanted to give this book a chance。 I found the beginning a tad confusing, but only due to new concepts, names, and languages。 I was so grateful for the added appendixes that explain terms and characters。 At the start of section 2, I was drawn in to the story and how each character was intertwined。 The idea of the planet this takes place on is also one of fascination, and how exactly the humans live on it。 Overall, a good read, and one I could continue on in I’m not a huge a sci-fi reader, but I wanted to give this book a chance。 I found the beginning a tad confusing, but only due to new concepts, names, and languages。 I was so grateful for the added appendixes that explain terms and characters。 At the start of section 2, I was drawn in to the story and how each character was intertwined。 The idea of the planet this takes place on is also one of fascination, and how exactly the humans live on it。 Overall, a good read, and one I could continue on in the series。 。。。more
