Summary

In Danielle Steel’s gripping new novel, a reclusive woman opens up her home to her neighbors in the wake of a devastating earthquake, setting off events that reveal secrets, break relationships apart, and bring strangers together to forge powerful new bonds。

Meredith White was one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces。 But a personal tragedy cut her acting career short and alienated her from her family。 For the last fifteen years, Meredith has been living alone in San Francisco with two trusted caretakers。 Then, on a muggy late summer day, a massive earthquake strikes Northern California, plunging the Bay Area into chaos。 Without a moment’s hesitation, Meredith invites her stunned and shaken neighbors into her mostly undamaged home as the recovery begins。

These people did not even realize that movie star Meredith White was living on their street。 Now, they are sharing her mansion, as well as their most closely kept secrets。 Without the walls and privacy of their own homes, one by one, new relationships are forged。 For every neighbor there is a story, from the doctor whose wife and children fear him, to the beautiful young woman dating a dishonorable man, to the aspiring writer caring for a famous blind musician。

In the heart of the crisis, Meredith finds herself venturing back into the world。 And thanks to the suspicions and the dogged detective work of a disaster relief volunteer, a former military officer named Charles, a shocking truth about her own world is exposed。 Suddenly Meredith sees her isolation, her estranged family, and even her acting career in a whole new light。

Filled with powerful human dramas, Neighbors is a penetrating look at how our world can be upended in a moment。 In a novel of unforgettable characters and stunning twists, acts of love and courage become the most powerful forces of all。

Former Hollywood icon, Meredith White, locked herself away from the world after tragedy befell her family。 Her fortress became a self-imposed jail cell as the world outside seemed a cruel and unforgiving place。 Taking in two house managers, she unknowingly fell victim to their con artists' trickery while on the surface were beloved friends。 When the world once again splits apart, her neighbors' needs during the earthquake, reawaken her spirit and shake the foundation she built after losing everything。 Will Meredith have strength to start again or remain locked away from her feelings? Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for the early copy of #Neighbors in exchange of an honest review。 I enjoyed the interplay between the neighbors but had difficulty getting in to story。 While the first chapter attempted to showcase Jack and Debbie's deception, it turned me off from reading the book。 As a Steel fan, I hoped it would get better and after meeting Meredith and her neighbors, I started to enjoy the story。 That being said, the first chapters set the tone for novels and unless your a fan, it provides a rocky beginning。 Would a first time reader continue or select another book? My opinion is that you need to care about Meredith before meeting Jack and Debbie。 A short flashback providing context provides readers reason to care about the couple's deceit。

Overall, the writing is unrealistic, repetitive, and completely out of touch with reality。 Some of the characters were interesting enough in the first half of the novel to keep me reading, but the second half was just too ridiculous for me。 No one behaves the way normal people would, and the dialogue is so corny。 Also I got very tired of the cops and ex-army guy saving the day in every chapter。 Most egregious was the caring & careful way the cops help rescue one of the kids from a homeless encam Overall, the writing is unrealistic, repetitive, and completely out of touch with reality。 Some of the characters were interesting enough in the first half of the novel to keep me reading, but the second half was just too ridiculous for me。 No one behaves the way normal people would, and the dialogue is so corny。 Also I got very tired of the cops and ex-army guy saving the day in every chapter。 Most egregious was the caring & careful way the cops help rescue one of the kids from a homeless encampment after he runs away (despite supposed budget cuts to the SF police dept, probably the most unrealistic thing about this book)。 This author seems to believe that rich people are virtuous and caring, that cops are great at protecting victims of domestic abuse, and that people can magically heal from traumatic events decades after the fact with just a few visits from some new friends。 What a dumb book。 。。。more

Neighbors by Danielle Steel is a genre romance, which is apparently Steel's forte。 This is not to say that reading it was not enjoyable。 It was a romance so the reader knew how it would end。 It was the journey and it was a great trip。 Meredith White had been a movie star, a very bankable one。 She had given that all up about 15 years earlier when he husband caused a scandal with another woman, and her son drowned。 Since then she has been living holed up in her San Francisco home with only a husba Neighbors by Danielle Steel is a genre romance, which is apparently Steel's forte。 This is not to say that reading it was not enjoyable。 It was a romance so the reader knew how it would end。 It was the journey and it was a great trip。 Meredith White had been a movie star, a very bankable one。 She had given that all up about 15 years earlier when he husband caused a scandal with another woman, and her son drowned。 Since then she has been living holed up in her San Francisco home with only a husband a wife to live with and take care of her。 She was estranged from her daughter, had been, really, since before the tragedies。 She saw no one and only occasionally snuck out to attend a yoga class。 She was never recognized。 Then it happened: an 8。2 on the Richter Scale earthquake。 Hers was the only block on the house that was stone, not wood frame, and so safer than the others。 So she did the right thing。 She took them in。 She was enjoying herself for the first time in years。 She like the commotion。 She loved it all。 Sad to say about an earthquake。 She even went with a couple of the other women to volunteer at the shelter。 It had been so long; she was happy again。 I read online that this trope is typical for Steel。 I don't care。 I liked it。 It taught several important lessons: don't give up on life; don't trust others with you life-follow up; include others in your life。 Meredith was a good character。 She was strong, resilient, although she had buried that for years, and supremely talented, in many different ways。 She had been living so long without support that she had forgotten what it was like to depend on herself, not one people trying to take advantage of you。 This was a surprising lesson considering she had probably been taken advantage of her entire life。 The plot was not bad and had some extremely good subplots。 All in all it was a terrific read。 Happily ever after for most of the cast。。。those who deserved it, at least。 I recommend it, especially if you are not a Steel fan because it won't feel overdone。 I was invited to read Neighbors by Netgalley。 All opinions contained herein are solely my own。 #netgalley #neighbors 。。。more

I have to admit that I haven't read a Danielle Steel book in a long time。 I received an ARC of this book and I felt like the sentences were very choppy - hopefully that was all edited before the final version hits the shelves, but overall I liked this book。This is the story of a bunch of people with their own problems who just happen to be neighbors。 Meredith is a 60 something year old former actress who quit at the top of her game when her own life imploded。 Her husband left her for another wom I have to admit that I haven't read a Danielle Steel book in a long time。 I received an ARC of this book and I felt like the sentences were very choppy - hopefully that was all edited before the final version hits the shelves, but overall I liked this book。This is the story of a bunch of people with their own problems who just happen to be neighbors。 Meredith is a 60 something year old former actress who quit at the top of her game when her own life imploded。 Her husband left her for another woman he was having an affair with and her 14 year old son died tragically while in her ex-husband's care。 This depression pushed her into being a recluse and it just evolved into staying that way for the next 14 years。One night a strong earthquake hit San Francisco and Meredith's house was the only one that remained inhabitable。 She went out into the streets to see if anyone needed help and that's the first time she met her neighbors - an orthopedic surgeon along with his wife and two pre-teen children; a world famous concert pianist and his male assistant; a billionaire tech startup and his "girl toy" and the 40ish year old couple that has been taking care of Meredith's house。It was interesting to see friendships develop among all these people and even to learn what secret each of them was hiding。 By the end, I was rooting for most of them to find their happily ever after。I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review。 The opinions stated above are mine without biases。 。。。more

Not a usual romance book that you would expect from Steel, this book is more women’s fiction。 Enjoyable read, great cast of characters, you will be drawn in from page 1。 I found this a nice break from some of my darker reads。 But it brought up Abuse。。。handled realistically, honestly。I hate to add triggers because they are often spoilers but at the same time, sometimes hard issues are dealt with in realistic ways in novels。。Triggers: domestic abuse, death of a childall in all, a really good read!

Definitely not my favorite by her unfortunately - a little too sensationalist or extreme and didn't really give me a place to run away into。 Per her usual formula, the protagonist is torn down and built back up again but some of the side stories and sub plots kind of popped up out of nowhere or were left undeveloped which is rather unusual for her。 I loved so many Danielle Steel novels this year, it feels ok for one to pass me by but I am a little saddened because I count on her writing to let m Definitely not my favorite by her unfortunately - a little too sensationalist or extreme and didn't really give me a place to run away into。 Per her usual formula, the protagonist is torn down and built back up again but some of the side stories and sub plots kind of popped up out of nowhere or were left undeveloped which is rather unusual for her。 I loved so many Danielle Steel novels this year, it feels ok for one to pass me by but I am a little saddened because I count on her writing to let me escape!! Meredith, a scorned woman after her son died and her husband cheated on her becomes a recluse and is unknowingly is being taken advantage of by her long term housekeepers。 It isn't until a massive earthquake comes and she takes in her neighbors that she realizes the life she is missing。 I love this book。 I like that it followed a small group of people in the neighborhood and how they all went from being strangers, not knowing famous people lived around them, to essentially family。 They all have Meredith, a scorned woman after her son died and her husband cheated on her becomes a recluse and is unknowingly is being taken advantage of by her long term housekeepers。 It isn't until a massive earthquake comes and she takes in her neighbors that she realizes the life she is missing。 I love this book。 I like that it followed a small group of people in the neighborhood and how they all went from being strangers, not knowing famous people lived around them, to essentially family。 They all have a well thought out story and they all tie into each other and eventually come out stronger。 Theres love, theres distress, theres mischief and it all ties together so well! There is a little bit of graphic violence so trigger warning on that。 But otherwise this was a great read and unlike any of the other Danielle Steel books I've read before。 Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for a reivew! 。。。more

Meredith was a top actress when her life fell apart 15 years ago。 She has since been in seclusion。 That is until the "big one" earthquake hits。 She opens her gates and home to her neighbors who all have damage to their homes。 Her neighbors have a wide range of careers and personalities。 In the time they spent with Meredith many have become close friends and some have not。 Lots of drama among her neighbors personal lives as well as with Meredith and her own family ties, I enjoyed this one even th Meredith was a top actress when her life fell apart 15 years ago。 She has since been in seclusion。 That is until the "big one" earthquake hits。 She opens her gates and home to her neighbors who all have damage to their homes。 Her neighbors have a wide range of careers and personalities。 In the time they spent with Meredith many have become close friends and some have not。 Lots of drama among her neighbors personal lives as well as with Meredith and her own family ties, I enjoyed this one even though it does cover some difficult topics at times。 I found with the many characters own stories that it was a little more involved than some of the Danielle Steele books I have read recently。Thanks to netgalley and Random House Publishing Group for the arc 。。。more

I tend to enjoy Danielle Steel books; they are fast reads and I grew up borrowing them from my mom, who really enjoys her writing。 "Neighbors" was a well rounded book with a good cast of characters- a few of them, REALLY unlikable。 This been should have a trigger warning or disclaimer for some of the graphic domestic violence depicted。 It was pertinent to the storyline of several characters, but it definitely elicits response reaction。 I felt all the feelings。 That said, I did enjoy the book and I tend to enjoy Danielle Steel books; they are fast reads and I grew up borrowing them from my mom, who really enjoys her writing。 "Neighbors" was a well rounded book with a good cast of characters- a few of them, REALLY unlikable。 This been should have a trigger warning or disclaimer for some of the graphic domestic violence depicted。 It was pertinent to the storyline of several characters, but it definitely elicits response reaction。 I felt all the feelings。 That said, I did enjoy the book and would recommend to others but not without a heads up。 The opinion expressed are my own; thanks Netgalley for the chance to read and review this ARC。 。。。more

In general, I enjoyed this book。 Most of the characters were all relatively likable, and while it was overall a pretty predictable book, I was okay with that。 But the DRAMA。 Wow。 Like beginning to end。 My other issue was the need to jam a ton of storylines and details into one single book。 It felt like there was at least 2, if not 3, potential separate books here in this one, and none of them were focused on enough to get into the amount of detail and understanding I typically prefer in a really In general, I enjoyed this book。 Most of the characters were all relatively likable, and while it was overall a pretty predictable book, I was okay with that。 But the DRAMA。 Wow。 Like beginning to end。 My other issue was the need to jam a ton of storylines and details into one single book。 It felt like there was at least 2, if not 3, potential separate books here in this one, and none of them were focused on enough to get into the amount of detail and understanding I typically prefer in a really good book。 So while I don't have a lot of major complaints with this one, I don't have a lot of excitement over it either, other than I enjoyed a lot of the characters。 Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Intriguing story of a wealthy recluse who opens her home up to neighbors after a terrible earthquake。  An integration of compelling backstories for each character and the secrets our protagonist has been hiding for the past 15 years。 This book contains drama, romance, and mystery。 A quick and easy reach, compelling page turner。 Fans of Danielle Steele won’t be disappointed and I can see this book appealing to a broad range of audiences。 Thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to review this ARC Intriguing story of a wealthy recluse who opens her home up to neighbors after a terrible earthquake。  An integration of compelling backstories for each character and the secrets our protagonist has been hiding for the past 15 years。 This book contains drama, romance, and mystery。 A quick and easy reach, compelling page turner。 Fans of Danielle Steele won’t be disappointed and I can see this book appealing to a broad range of audiences。 Thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to review this ARC in exchange for my honest review 。。。more
