Summary

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, heir to a noble family tasked with ruling an inhospitable world where the only thing of value is the “spice” melange, a drug capable of extending life and enhancing consciousness。 Coveted across the known universe, melange is a prize worth killing for。。。

When House Atreides is betrayed, the destruction of Paul’s family will set the boy on a journey toward a destiny greater than he could ever have imagined。 And as he evolves into the mysterious man known as Muad’Dib, he will bring to fruition humankind’s most ancient and unattainable dream。

First time I've read this book and I am actually glad that it happend now and not 10 or 15 years earlier, as now I can find more correlations with a variety of religions, compare it with other books and finally - with an interesting movie adaptation。 First time I've read this book and I am actually glad that it happend now and not 10 or 15 years earlier, as now I can find more correlations with a variety of religions, compare it with other books and finally - with an interesting movie adaptation。 。。。more

I didn't hear of this saga before until the movie came out。 So, like any other teenager in Spain at the time, I decided to watch the movie and then maybe read the book。 I ended up going to the cinema three times while I was waiting for the book to arrive。 It was worth the waiting, it was worth the money, it was worth EVERYTHING。 I have never before read a book like this。 I highly recommend it, do not fear the length because you are going to devour it, trust me。 I didn't hear of this saga before until the movie came out。 So, like any other teenager in Spain at the time, I decided to watch the movie and then maybe read the book。 I ended up going to the cinema three times while I was waiting for the book to arrive。 It was worth the waiting, it was worth the money, it was worth EVERYTHING。 I have never before read a book like this。 I highly recommend it, do not fear the length because you are going to devour it, trust me。 。。。more

I first read Dune when I was a teenager, probably about 15 because I'd moved from the children's library to the adult library。 I re-read it in college but never picked it up again。 It didn't impress me but I couldn't have told you why back then。 The movie is coming out so I decided to re-read Dune。By chapter 7, I'd already decided that I didn't care for Dune so I began to analyze why。 It reminds me a lot of the golden age of science fiction where the only place for women is as religious zalots, I first read Dune when I was a teenager, probably about 15 because I'd moved from the children's library to the adult library。 I re-read it in college but never picked it up again。 It didn't impress me but I couldn't have told you why back then。 The movie is coming out so I decided to re-read Dune。By chapter 7, I'd already decided that I didn't care for Dune so I began to analyze why。 It reminds me a lot of the golden age of science fiction where the only place for women is as religious zalots, mothers, and concubines/wives。 When it comes to women and their place in the universe, Dune has not aged well。Dune reminds me of Tarnsman of Gor。 Women exist to serve man and happily do so。 Women are most content when serving man。 Her purpose lies in serving men。 Ugh!I'll watch the movie and compare it to the 1984 Dune movie with Sting。 I remember being bored stiff at the movie--I may have even have fallen asleep。 I still fall asleep when confronted with watching 2001 so take my review as you like it。 I'm not a fan。"Lots of sound and fury signifying nothing。" 。。。more

Had I read this book when it came out (I wasn't even born then), I'm sure I would have given it five star for it's originality and creativity。 Since so many things have been borrowed from this book by others though, so much of his innovation feels less interesting。 Even so, this is well written science fiction and includes thoughtful political allegories to the Middle East。 The audio version included several voices which I didn't love at first but grew used to。 I do wish I had read the paper ver Had I read this book when it came out (I wasn't even born then), I'm sure I would have given it five star for it's originality and creativity。 Since so many things have been borrowed from this book by others though, so much of his innovation feels less interesting。 Even so, this is well written science fiction and includes thoughtful political allegories to the Middle East。 The audio version included several voices which I didn't love at first but grew used to。 I do wish I had read the paper version if only to be able to easily flip back to the princess portions once I had full understanding of who she was。 。。。more

So today I want to talk about Dune。 I will try to explain my thoughts without spoilers (I will warn you if there are spoilers) 。 So I will start with why you may or may not like Dune。 This book was different from what I expected。 It's also very specific。 In its writing style, descriptions, characters。What surprised me the most was minimum of describing technology, devices, weapons etc。 Because a lot of technology is usually what we expect from Sci-fi right? Personally I'm glad there weren't many technology related things cause I'm glad I can switch on computer。 So I wasn't confused。Continuing with descriptions, there aren't many actually despite the length of this book。 So you really have to stay focused while reading because if you see new term, it propably won't be described again。At first you propably won't know what's going on。 And then there will princess Irulan's notes。 And you will be even more confused。 So once again you have to stay focused。Characters are very specific and different。 In my opinion they aren't very likeable。 And they are flawed。 That's what makes them human (or not?)。 You may also notice very chaotic POV switching。Now let's start with what I think。 As I mentioned earlier it was very diffrent from what I expected。 I didn't expect it to catch my interest that much。I haven't connected with the characters yet。 But I'm interested in what will happen to them in future。 Herbert prove that I should feel fear。 You never know when he's about to kill someone off。 There were few characters and I though : they would for sure make it to the end! And they die 30 seconds later。 Some deaths really caught me off guard。At first I thought there was strict line between which characters we should consider as"good" and which as "bad"。 When the end was coming closer it only got darker and more twisted。 I truly didn't expect that。 At first I was sure that this one will be the hero, my favourite。 And when I finished I remained shocked。 What happened? So here I'm wondering if they get worse or better。。。 I love it when books make me want to figure out something on my own。 When they make me think。 Make me question actions of human kind。 Dune made me do these。 And that's why enjoyed Dune。 Looking forward to reading prequel! I recommend the movie as well! 5🌟/5🌟 。。。more

The infamous Dune, the fantasy of the sci-fi world。I find it somewhat difficult to review this one。The writing is certainly all over the place, ranging from subpar to just amazing。And the story line is certainly not perfect。However, Dune is much more than mere sum of it's parts。The world building, on which most of the book is spent, is excellent。You are pulled into this epic fantasy/sci-fi world, taken through it's many layers, introduced to plethora of characters, conflicting motivations, conce The infamous Dune, the fantasy of the sci-fi world。I find it somewhat difficult to review this one。The writing is certainly all over the place, ranging from subpar to just amazing。And the story line is certainly not perfect。However, Dune is much more than mere sum of it's parts。The world building, on which most of the book is spent, is excellent。You are pulled into this epic fantasy/sci-fi world, taken through it's many layers, introduced to plethora of characters, conflicting motivations, concepts, religions, myths, political factions, ecology, etc。It carries a lot of parallels with the real world, still relevant today, but it is also bold and imaginative。Characters are explored intimately, from their inner monologues to their most guarded fears and desires。This is one of the main aspects that makes the book so great。Paradoxically, this also works to it's disadvantage。The world building is amazing, but since it takes up most of the book, the actual plot takes a backseat。 Looking back at it, it feels a bit rushed and bare, especially the conclusion。It falls some ways short of delivering a satisfying narrative。The plot alone, without the world building, feels like a setup for a grander story, a layered exploration of power and pitfalls of Messiah delusion。I guess that's what the sequel is for, but I still hold it somewhat against the book that it's overarching plot is so lacking in being self contained。Overall, thanks mostly to it's intricate and expansive world building, Dune is a very enjoyable read indeed。 。。。more

The Arab and Amazigh appropriation makes me want to throw up。 The Orientalist tropes。 The bastardization of Arabic and Islam。I don't even want to think about the movie which doesn't try and cast a single Arab or Amazigh person (Amazigh literally translates into "free man") for the roles based on them。 All people of color are the same after all, interchangeable。 Love this for us。 The Arab and Amazigh appropriation makes me want to throw up。 The Orientalist tropes。 The bastardization of Arabic and Islam。I don't even want to think about the movie which doesn't try and cast a single Arab or Amazigh person (Amazigh literally translates into "free man") for the roles based on them。 All people of color are the same after all, interchangeable。 Love this for us。 。。。more

Woah that was Moad-deep yo Trés biené jesuitI had a spice melanging good time(While I adore and am slightly intimidated by the scope of Herbert’s vision and ambition I also feel that sometimes the prose style can be a little off putting and silly idk I’ll get round to the sequel)

I’m obviously not a huge science fiction fan, I found this book quite a struggle! The world created is amazing and I dig the ecological passions of the Fremen but and a big BUT, I find the characters and relationships so tiresome and unoriginal。 Men fight。 Women give advice and stay at home。 Wooo。Would love a to read a feminist rewrite of Dune。

24 October 2021。 I have run into so many obstacles while reading this, namely: exams; other books; expiry of the ebook loan; expiry of the audiobook loan; inability to borrow from the school library as I’m graduating shortly。 Yesterday, I placed a reservation at the public library for a hardcopy。 I hope I get it soon。 // I have been enjoying the book, though, with its vivid descriptions, and I love knowing the thought process of characters。 Sometimes I have trouble visualising the space such as 24 October 2021。 I have run into so many obstacles while reading this, namely: exams; other books; expiry of the ebook loan; expiry of the audiobook loan; inability to borrow from the school library as I’m graduating shortly。 Yesterday, I placed a reservation at the public library for a hardcopy。 I hope I get it soon。 // I have been enjoying the book, though, with its vivid descriptions, and I love knowing the thought process of characters。 Sometimes I have trouble visualising the space such as the different wings, or the layout of Arrakis like where different types of rocks, the Shield Wall, caves, and Paul’s home lie in relation to each other。 This isn’t really the author’s fault though, I just usually have trouble following this。 Excited to have my hands on a copy again and resume my slow reading。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Wow, that was a journey。 Not going to lie, for most of the first half of the book I felt very uninterested。 It was slow and confusing and I just wasn’t compelled to read more。 But as the story progressed, I became familiar with the world, and the plot started moving…I WAS HOOKED!!!And that last part, where we see Paul step into his role as maudib and become almost unrecognizable, AGHHSO GOOD!!!

Phew, this took me a long time to read。 I get how epic and different this must've been back in the day, and I know the following it has, so I'll tread lightly here。 What I think was a good story seemed so bogged down by so many unnecessary and sometimes unexplained terms, words, histories, etc。。。 Lots of characters, which is great, but with many different names at times。 I was actually amazed by the number of similarities there were here between Dune and Game of Thrones, actually。 Worth reading, Phew, this took me a long time to read。 I get how epic and different this must've been back in the day, and I know the following it has, so I'll tread lightly here。 What I think was a good story seemed so bogged down by so many unnecessary and sometimes unexplained terms, words, histories, etc。。。 Lots of characters, which is great, but with many different names at times。 I was actually amazed by the number of similarities there were here between Dune and Game of Thrones, actually。 Worth reading, just to see what the hype is, but I really don't see myself reading all of these books。Just wanted to add one more thing I just thought of。 For the entire book, I wanted to punch Paul in the neck for being a little douche。 Hard to cheer for that kind of main character。 。。。more
