Not my favorite of the series。 A lot of theological philosophy, even for Penric。 :)

Mystery, magic, theology。。。 as my favourite sorcerer and demon duo return。 I gobbled this down in one sitting。

Marsha Valance

Penric and Desdemona sorcerously investigate a case of death magic。 With the help of Adria and her demon, they clear the names of a suicide, find the body of a drowned boy, resolve 2 cases of ghostly possession, & help 2 souls ascend to their gods。

Good proper stuff。 This is a really good addition to the Penrith series。 You can start with this story, but Why not start with book one?

Penric gets new material for his book。Penric has his hands full as usual with dead people who aren't properly dead, serious crimes and a missing child。 A simple summons to the Healing Temple turns out quite complicated。 As always he and Des stumble through to interesting philosophical issues and a resolution to the situation。 Thank you so much Ms Lois for another wonderful addition to one of my favorite series。 Penric gets new material for his book。Penric has his hands full as usual with dead people who aren't properly dead, serious crimes and a missing child。 A simple summons to the Healing Temple turns out quite complicated。 As always he and Des stumble through to interesting philosophical issues and a resolution to the situation。 Thank you so much Ms Lois for another wonderful addition to one of my favorite series。 。。。more

An interesting, well written and very sad story。

It's always a pleasure to see this series continuing on its way, although this installment is an intriguing but sombre tale。 It contains nothing much to be cheerful about; although fortunately Penric is a naturally cheerful fellow。The World of the Five Gods, in which these adventures are all set, has its own peculiar and rather interesting theology, and each story seems to be written because the author wants to explore some new facet of this theology that she hasn't gone into before。 In this cas It's always a pleasure to see this series continuing on its way, although this installment is an intriguing but sombre tale。 It contains nothing much to be cheerful about; although fortunately Penric is a naturally cheerful fellow。The World of the Five Gods, in which these adventures are all set, has its own peculiar and rather interesting theology, and each story seems to be written because the author wants to explore some new facet of this theology that she hasn't gone into before。 In this case, we take a look at the theological and practical implications of death magic—a subject that was dealt with quite extensively in The Curse of Chalion, but time has gone by, and now here's a new angle on it。There are various deaths in this not-very-long story, but it's not all dismal: Penric continues to get along well with his family, his colleagues, and some of the new characters that he meets。 I think no new major characters are introduced here, and we see relatively little of the characters we already know; but there are some new minor characters who display sparks of life。It may be worth noting that this is the story in which Penric explores a sewer。 I admit that I've never spent any time in a sewer, but I can easily think of various authors who have sent their heroes into sewers。 For example, Terry Pratchett in Men at Arms, Lindsey Davis in Three Hands in the Fountain, and Ben Aaronovitch in Whispers Under Ground。 Perhaps it was inevitable that Penric would be put through this rite of passage sooner or later。 。。。more

Another great Penric story, beautifully written as ever, great story, just too brief
