Summary

“Addictive, suspenseful and masterfully written。。。will delight fans of Big Little Lies。” —Michele Campbell

“[A] witty, hyperlocal mystery…With a light, Liane Moriarty-esque touch。。。” —New York Times

L。 Alison Heller, whose work has been praised by Liane Moriarty as "warm, witty…refreshingly true to life,” explores the ultimate sacrifices of parenting in The Neighbor’s Secret, a propulsive and juicy novel filled with gripping twists and instantly recognizable characters。

How well do you really know your neighbors?

With its sprawling yards and excellent schools, Cottonwood Estates is the perfect place to raise children。 The Cottonwood Book Club serves as the subdivision’s eyes and ears, meeting once a month for discussion, gossip, and cocktails。 If their selections trend toward twisty thrillers and salacious murder mysteries, it’s only because the members feel secure that such evil has no place in their own cul-de-sacs。

Or does it?

What happened to Lena’s family fifteen years ago was a tragic accident, and she will never admit otherwise。 Devoted wife and mother Annie refuses to acknowledge—even to herself—the weight of a past shame。 And new resident Jen wants friends, but as always, worry about her troubled son gets in the way。

When late-night acts of vandalism target the women of the book club in increasingly violent and personal ways, they will be forced to decide how far to go to keep their secrets。 At least they all agree on what’s most important: protecting their children at any cost—even if it means someone has to die。

Listened to audiobook。

The storyline was a bit sluggish for a majority of that book。 There were also several POVs that made it hard to know which character is which。 This made it hard to connect with the characters as well。I won’t be picking this book back up to reread。

Emily

Decent suburban thriller that keeps you guessing。

Kylee

The first half of the book had too many characters it was hard to keep up。 Once I finally knew them all though I did end up enjoying the book!

If you’ve seen Big Little Lies, you have essentially read this book。

WHAT A FUN READ!I'm a sucker for a multi-POV book with multiple mysteries tied into it, and this one did not disappoint。 I flew through it, but did have to make a small chart to keep up with who was related to who。 Highly recommend this for anyone looking for something a little less tense and a way to escape。 WHAT A FUN READ!I'm a sucker for a multi-POV book with multiple mysteries tied into it, and this one did not disappoint。 I flew through it, but did have to make a small chart to keep up with who was related to who。 Highly recommend this for anyone looking for something a little less tense and a way to escape。 。。。more

3。5 rounded up。 The ending of this book required a massive amount of suspension of disbelief and also kind of came out of left field, so subtracting stars for that。 However, I really felt like the author nailed what it’s like to be a parent today and how you worry so much about your kids and think other people have it easier when that’s not always the case。 I think as long as you manage your expectations, this wound up being an entertaining read。

2。5 rounded up。 A bit boring overall。

Ellie

Solid funny, enjoyable, casual read。

3。5 stars。 This was one of my September Book Of The Month selections。 There were a lot of characters to keep straight 。 。 。 I liked it, but don’t think it will leave a lasting impression。

Would give this a 3。5/5 stars。 Had some twists and terms I wasn’t expecting and I had a hard time getting in to it, but by the end I enjoyed it!

It was a good book just not what I was expecting! Loads of characters that made it difficult to keep up with them。 Thought more would have been done with the vandals。 Good quick read。

Characters were hard to follow at first, with interchanging POV。 It ended up gaining momentum as the story went on, and I loved how it wrapped everything up at the end, with no questions left hanging。 I didn’t expect some of the plot twists。。 overall, solid read

This book had so much potential。 It follows the stories of Annie, Lena, and Jen in the Cottonwood Estates neighborhood。 All have their own secrets and throughout the book we learn what those are。 I liked Jen's story because her thought process was pretty clear, but Annie and Lena's stories were so vague and their connection felt odd and didn't make sense until the very end。 The last 30 pages literally felt like the author was handing out plot twists and trying to one-up the last one and they rea This book had so much potential。 It follows the stories of Annie, Lena, and Jen in the Cottonwood Estates neighborhood。 All have their own secrets and throughout the book we learn what those are。 I liked Jen's story because her thought process was pretty clear, but Annie and Lena's stories were so vague and their connection felt odd and didn't make sense until the very end。 The last 30 pages literally felt like the author was handing out plot twists and trying to one-up the last one and they really seemed out of the blue。 This book was missing something for me to make me really love it but it was overall ok。 。。。more

This one had me guessing the whole way。 Maybe because I wasn’t super focused when reading, but I really did enjoy it。

A bit torn on this one。 The mystery part of the story is as good…many turns I didn’t expect for sure but I really didn’t like most of the characters, found most of them annoying。 Could be because I don’t have children but I found a lot of their issues first world problems that I couldn’t emphasize with。

Good easy read。 Lotta deception and faded memories。 A lot of secrets。 Who knew a teenage pregnancy secret too。 And kinda figured out who killed one guy but didn’t see the second death coming!! I liked it

It's well-written, but the characters are annoying。 Annie is ridiculously unprofessional。 She acts like a teenager。 Jen is overly defensive and willfully blind。 The plot works and effectively reveals enough details of what happened 15 years before and during the course of the book。 The ending is sufficient。 The last chapter is a bit too much, but it feels like the author really wanted to give us a better idea of the long-term effects on the characters。A minor note, but it's frustrating for a boo It's well-written, but the characters are annoying。 Annie is ridiculously unprofessional。 She acts like a teenager。 Jen is overly defensive and willfully blind。 The plot works and effectively reveals enough details of what happened 15 years before and during the course of the book。 The ending is sufficient。 The last chapter is a bit too much, but it feels like the author really wanted to give us a better idea of the long-term effects on the characters。A minor note, but it's frustrating for a book to mention asexuality, but to do so incorrectly。 It's only the one reference when Jen is speculating about another character, and she describes celibacy。 She clearly doesn't understand asexual is an orientation, since she describes it as a movement, specifically linking it to a religious movement。 Asexuality is so rarely mentioned that it's incredibly frustrating to see misconceptions spread without any effort to acknowledge that the information was wrong。 。。。more

This was…underwhelming。 Way too many characters。 There wasn’t really a plot, just a bunch of mini sub-plots instead。 Forgettable。 I won’t remember anything about this book in 2 days。 It had potential but it missed the mark for me。 😴

Bummer。 Is it because none of the characters were likeable - or perhaps because the multiple POV’s seemed muddled and needlessly sporadic - or maybe because the plot tried to be clever but fell short into trying to hard to be clever and twisty? Who knows。 I had high hopes and this left me checking how many more pages were left in each chapter to see how much more there was to read - never a good sign。 Clever premise with how each section starts with a book club selection - but what a bummer beca Bummer。 Is it because none of the characters were likeable - or perhaps because the multiple POV’s seemed muddled and needlessly sporadic - or maybe because the plot tried to be clever but fell short into trying to hard to be clever and twisty? It’s rare that a story is told from different perspectives and somehow I want to hear all of them。 This was well written and riveting。 Loved it。

I read this book in one day and wow- I loved every bit of it。 Short chapters & I couldn’t put it down。 What a fun read 🤗

Like 4。5 stars。 Really solid domestic drama。

There's a group of women who live in a bougey neighborhood who have a book club。 The story is centered around multiple viewpoints from the book club women - all of whom seem to be having various issues with their children, husbands, or pasts。 So I thought the writing was fine, but this story was a big MEH。 The book is billed as having a vandal who is running around destroying the neighborhood in increasingly dangerous ways (i。e。, graffiti in the shape of a dick to something more nefarious) but t There's a group of women who live in a bougey neighborhood who have a book club。 The story is centered around multiple viewpoints from the book club women - all of whom seem to be having various issues with their children, husbands, or pasts。 So I thought the writing was fine, but this story was a big MEH。 The book is billed as having a vandal who is running around destroying the neighborhood in increasingly dangerous ways (i。e。, graffiti in the shape of a dick to something more nefarious) but there's maybe four solid pages about the vandal? 3。5 ⭐I had a difficult time getting into this book, probably because I read in small bits。 The chapters were short, so just as you were figuring out one character/family you moved on to another。 Which is probably why I never connected with any of the characters。 I was probably 2/3 through the book before I didn't have to stop and think who was who at the start of each chapter。Overall, the story was good, just very choppy。BOTM 9/21 3。5 ⭐I had a difficult time getting into this book, probably because I read in small bits。 The chapters were short, so just as you were figuring out one character/family you moved on to another。 Which is probably why I never connected with any of the characters。 I was probably 2/3 through the book before I didn't have to stop and think who was who at the start of each chapter。Overall, the story was good, just very choppy。BOTM 9/21 。。。more

I really enjoyed the build up of this book。 The way the story unfolded kept me hooked。

I thought the beginning was so confusing understanding the various story lines。 If there was a family tree from the start (whos married to who / children) I think that could have provided clarity。 The big reveal wasn't that surprising a bit letdown as this was my first BOM pick。 I thought the beginning was so confusing understanding the various story lines。 If there was a family tree from the start (whos married to who / children) I think that could have provided clarity。 The big reveal wasn't that surprising a bit letdown as this was my first BOM pick。 。。。more

I enjoyed this one! I had an idea about some of the ending but not all of it!The book club as a way to tie it all together definitely was a bonus。
