Wowzers! I am so thankful I not in the market for online dating at this point。 If I was-this would scare the shit out of me! 😖This book is timely, fast paced and suspenseful as heck! There is so much about this book I love。 The thriller aspect - absolutely and so much about society and the internet and internet dating is spot on。。。 like I was screaming THANK YOU!The one issue I have is that it became repetitively preachy。 And this is from someone who pretty much agreed with 98% (and please don't take this as a referendum that the book is me because literary license and all that and it is a psychological thriller)。 But if someone who is on board with the underlying messages o There is so much about this book I love。 The thriller aspect - absolutely and so much about society and the internet and internet dating is spot on。。。 like I was screaming THANK YOU!The one issue I have is that it became repetitively preachy。 And this is from someone who pretty much agreed with 98% (and please don't take this as a referendum that the book is me because literary license and all that and it is a psychological thriller)。 But if someone who is on board with the underlying messages of a book is like ok you can stop now, by the end of the book? Last Girl Ghosted by Lisa Unger is a very highly recommended psychological thriller that begins with an online dating match。Wren Greenwood, who writes the advice column "Dear Birdie," is talked into trying the dating app Torch by her best friend, Jax。 She meets a few forgettable men but then she meets Adam Harper, an IT executive, and the two immediately have a connection。 Three months later Adam doesn't show up for a date, deletes all of his contact information, and ghosts Wren。 She has no idea Last Girl Ghosted by Lisa Unger is a very highly recommended psychological thriller that begins with an online dating match。Wren Greenwood, who writes the advice column "Dear Birdie," is talked into trying the dating app Torch by her best friend, Jax。 She meets a few forgettable men but then she meets Adam Harper, an IT executive, and the two immediately have a connection。 Three months later Adam doesn't show up for a date, deletes all of his contact information, and ghosts Wren。 She has no idea why he would do this as she thought they were in a serious relationship。 Then she learns that Adam may not be who he said he is and is contacted by Bailey Kirk, a private detective who is looking for Adam。 Kirk is investigating the disappearance of three other women who also met Adam, although he was using different names, through Torch。Wren's secret, disturbing background is hinted at in the beginning of the novel but more information is disclosed once Kirk enters the picture and the search for Adam becomes more intense。 Chapters set in the present day are offset by chapters set in Wren's past when she was a child and are all written in the first-person。 The chapters from her troubled childhood help establish who and why Wren is the woman she is today。 There are many dark secrets in her past and several of them are unexpected。 It becomes clear that Adam's ghosting of her is indicative of some future plans he may have, but he may not fully realize what strength Wren can pull from her past experiences。Last Girl Ghosted is a totally engrossing well written novel。 The evolution of how Wren handled the ghosting, beginning with blaming herself, and how this began to change when Kirk showed up was believable and riveting。 As more information about Wren's background is disclosed, it becomes clear that there is more to her than the ability to give good advice to troubled people。 She is an engaging character who has depth, resourcefulness, intelligence, and an inner strength。 All the characters are fully realized and credible。The plot is compelling and held my attention throughout。 Just when you think you know all the facts, there is some new twist in the plot that adds another layer of depth and complexity。 After thinking I had things figured out, it became clear that I didn't have the complete picture。 Almost no one is who they appear to be。 All the twists and new revelations, even when surprising, are conceivable in the plot。 It was fantastic to see Wren pull all her inner resources and knowledge to the forefront to assist her。 (It also serves as a warning about using online dating apps。) The setting is in late 2019 into early 2020, which also serves to add to the tension as readers know what is coming in the future。Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of Park Row Books。http://www。shetreadssoftly。com/2021/1。。。 。。。more

The characters were very well-developed, brought to life convincingly by their human frailties, their hidden strengths and later the understanding that comes from their back stories。 Wren Greenwood, the main character, has obviously worked hard to create her happy, peaceful and fulfilling life, working as an agony aunt。 The reader is left to wonder about her past from the snippets of information you glean。 Her strength of character and determination in overcoming trauma is immense。 Her best friend Jax is a colourful and joyous character, enveloping her friend in family and love。 Robin, her other friend adds a fascinating alternative view to the story。 Adam on the other hand is dark & brooding, whilst being respectful and gentle with Wren’s hidden layers。 Once Bailey Kirk, an ex-NYPD detective, now a PI, arrives you have a wealth of characters to give depth and understanding to the plot。 I thoroughly enjoyed the story and was slightly unnerved by the socially reflective aspects that made me consider modern society as a reader。 There are so many threads to dwell on: missing girls; childhood traumas; advice columns; friendships; forgiveness; online dating; ghosting and the pace of the world we live in。 The story is narrated mostly from Wren’s POV, alternating with tales from the past, of a family who ‘dropped out’ and became survivalists。 Some of those parts I found hard to read emotionally。 It is a totally different setting and feeling。 Some parts are also told from Bailey’s POV。 This book had me gripped from the first few pages and I longed for time to read more。 I loved the ways the threads all intertwined and came together to reveal all the secrets, my mind was working overtime。 The ending gave me the answers I needed whilst also leaving me wondering about the future。 Needless to say I loved it!! 。。。more

This book started off so strongly with a gripping premise: Wren's best friend talks her into trying to meet guys via the dating app Torch。 Wren goes for the brooding type, and is intrigued by Adam's profile--he isn't the typical shallow vain guy she usually sees, so she agrees to meet him。 The two connect right away and soon are spending very little time apart。 Wren knows that to advance their relationship, she needs to tell him about the things she is hiding in her past and her present。 After s This book started off so strongly with a gripping premise: Wren's best friend talks her into trying to meet guys via the dating app Torch。 Wren goes for the brooding type, and is intrigued by Adam's profile--he isn't the typical shallow vain guy she usually sees, so she agrees to meet him。 The two connect right away and soon are spending very little time apart。 Wren knows that to advance their relationship, she needs to tell him about the things she is hiding in her past and her present。 After she tells him about the past she is keeping hidden, he doesn't show up for their date the next day and texts her that he's sorry。 His number is disconnected and his social media profiles disappear。 He ghosts her。 A private detective shows up stating that he is investigating the disappearance of three women, all connected to the man she knows as Adam。 Then the book just gets weird。 It's almost like the author came up with a great hook for the beginning, and then didn't know where to go with it。 We delve back into Wren's past and she turns into a bit of an armchair detective alongside the actual private investigator, Bailey。 Clues start to be revealed。 Then it gets even stranger and I thought the ending resolution was confusing and just plain strange。 (view spoiler)[ We never get a good explanation for why Adam disappeared from Wren's life in the first place。 And as for the reveal of Adam's true identity--I could not figure out why they didn't put that together, because I certainly did! His motivation for everything was also odd, the way he acted at the end was so contrary to how he acted when the two of them were dating。 I guess I'm supposed to believe that their relationship was pretty normal and he was able to hide that he was a psychopath--to what end? (hide spoiler)] The use of second person--basically Wren talking to Adam and telling the story to Adam throughout--was offputting for me and I had to continually remind myself who the "you" referred to。 I just don't feel like the use of second person was the right thing for this story。 After really loving Unger's previous book Confessions on the 7:45, this one just didn't do it for me overall。 Her books are often hit or miss for me: I loved the Ridley Jones series, but really didn't like Crazy Love You。 I'll just count this one as a slight miss and hope I like the next one better。 In general, I love the twists this author comes up with, but this one just fell a bit flat in its execution。 It's not a horrible book, and many people may really like it, but it's not the best book by this author。 I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own。 。。。more

Despite having a few issues with this story near the end - more on that later - I'm compelled to say this right up front: I do not recall the last time I read a book so thoroughly engrossing - mesmerizing, even - that except for a handful of chapters I started the night before, I polished off in one sitting even though it extended past my usual bedtime。 For that alone, it gets a rousing WOW! from me。Wren Greenwood is a successful advice columnist and blogger with a past that she's managed to hid Despite having a few issues with this story near the end - more on that later - I'm compelled to say this right up front: I do not recall the last time I read a book so thoroughly engrossing - mesmerizing, even - that except for a handful of chapters I started the night before, I polished off in one sitting even though it extended past my usual bedtime。 For that alone, it gets a rousing WOW! from me。Wren Greenwood is a successful advice columnist and blogger with a past that she's managed to hide from the rest of the world (she's created a whole new identity since her childhood years)。 For obvious reasons, she's a bit of a loner, and her best friend convinces her to sign up for an online dating app and dip her toes into the dating waters。 When she does, she finds an intriguing guy named Adam; they meet, and for the first time in her life, Wren thinks she's in love。 Heck, she even told him about her horrific past when he asked her to share with him something she's never told anyone else。 Not long thereafter, the unthinkable happens。 At their most recent arranged meeting, he's a no-show; his phone has been disconnected and all his online profiles have gone poof in the night。 As young folks would say today, she's been ghosted。To put it mildly, she's crushed。 And determined to figure out why。 Was he turned off by her past? Did something awful happen to him? Did he have a few secrets of his own? Then she gets a visit from private detective Bailey Kirk; his firm's client is the father of another young woman who went missing after hooking up with a guy online who's a dead ringer for her Adam。 Could it be that he's a serial lover and leaver? Or, when a couple of other women met up with him turn out to be missing as well, maybe something worse? The bulk of the story is told by Wren (and occasionally Bailey); some chapters flash back to scenes from Wren's frenetic childhood and a couple of the other victims。 That's a bit confusing at first, but I didn't find it hard to follow。 Plus, there's quite a bit of repetition as Wren and Bailey retell their experiences and conclusions with other characters - such as Bailey's boss and the man who helped Wren escape her horrific childhood and create a new life - so what's happened then and now gets reinforced throughout。The conclusion, albeit nail-bitingly fast-paced, is where I lost some interest (not to mention respect for Wren, who up to that point had been a survivor with a sensible head on her shoulders in my view)。 Of course, I won't reveal what happened - so I'll just say that some parts (and characters) were very satisfying and others not so much。 The epilogue, too, was a bit unsettling, bringing what I consider to be a surprising, and somewhat disappointing, turn of events。But no matter; I base my reviews primarily on the quality of writing and plot originality, not on whether or not I agree with an author's perspective or don't "connect" with the characters。 And trust me, that WOW! factor that struck me at the beginning was in place right to the end。 Well done, and once again I thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for allowing me to read and review a pre-release copy。 。。。more

Lisa Unger can always be relied on to deliver an engaging and exciting thriller。 She's a master of plotting and her writing is clear and beautiful。 But I particularly loved "Last Girl Ghosted" because of its protagonist。 Wren Greenwood is like my new BFF: She's vulnerable and, yes, lonely。 She's joined a dating app at a friend's insistence, but after a few meaningless hookups (hey, she's human), she's going to put it aside。 Until she meets Adam。。。。 She's no fool, but he really does seem to get h Lisa Unger can always be relied on to deliver an engaging and exciting thriller。 She's a master of plotting and her writing is clear and beautiful。 But I particularly loved "Last Girl Ghosted" because of its protagonist。 Wren Greenwood is like my new BFF: She's vulnerable and, yes, lonely。 She's joined a dating app at a friend's insistence, but after a few meaningless hookups (hey, she's human), she's going to put it aside。 Until she meets Adam。。。。 She's no fool, but he really does seem to get her and she lets herself begin to fall。 Then, of course, everything goes haywire – but (and this is why I really love Wren), she's not only vulnerable and relatable, she's also a smart, tough cookie。 That makes for an exciting – at times really dark – thriller, with a heroine you can really root for! Go, Wrenc! 。。。more

Wren Greenwood has overcome a lot。 Her childhood was blown up when her father killed her brother and mother and he was sentenced to prison。 She was raised by a women in The Hollows, outside New York City。 She changed her name and re-invented herself。 And then she meets Adam on the Torch app。 She is interested in meeting new men and Adam ticks a lot of her boxes。 But, within a short period of time, Adam disappears, none of his social media contacts work and his office space is empty。 Bailey Kirk Wren Greenwood has overcome a lot。 Her childhood was blown up when her father killed her brother and mother and he was sentenced to prison。 She was raised by a women in The Hollows, outside New York City。 She changed her name and re-invented herself。 And then she meets Adam on the Torch app。 She is interested in meeting new men and Adam ticks a lot of her boxes。 But, within a short period of time, Adam disappears, none of his social media contacts work and his office space is empty。 Bailey Kirk arrives at Wren's doorstep and tells her he is looking for Adam because another girl has gone missing。 And there are two other missing girls。 Wren decides to hunt Adam (or whoever he really is) down。 And it means she has to return to The Hollows and face down some of her worst fears。 Unger always write a good book, but for me, this one seemed a little formulaic。 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley。After a first part that got me hooked, in the rest of the book my interest was fading and the anticlimatic ending didn’t help much either。 In addition, I found it difficult to connect with the main character。I can’t say the book is bad because Lisa Unger knows her trade but for that same reason I expected more。
