Summary

Sidman's lyrical poetry and Krommes' charming illustrations illuminate this intriguing shape found all throughout the universe。 Young readers will enjoy discovering all of the different spirals in nature in this new board book edition。 What makes the tiny snail shell so beautiful? Why does that shape occur in nature over and over again--in rushing rivers, in a flower bud, even inside your ear?

With simplicity and grace, Sidman and Krommes not only reveal the many spirals in nature--from fiddleheads to elephant tusks, from crashing waves to spiraling galaxies--but also celebrate the beauty and usefulness of this fascinating shape。

Would have been a solid four, but the last page of my board book edition (isbn 97813328485434, 2011 Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, manufactured in Mexico) was MISALIGNED IN PRINTING and CUT OFF all of the "eastern gray squirrel", which I am guessing is meant to be curled in a hole in the tree (can just make out bottom of a hole and a sliver of grey above that)。 What a piss off! Wasn't inexpensive, either。 Will complain to publisher。 Would have been a solid four, but the last page of my board book edition (isbn 97813328485434, 2011 Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, manufactured in Mexico) was MISALIGNED IN PRINTING and CUT OFF all of the "eastern gray squirrel", which I am guessing is meant to be curled in a hole in the tree (can just make out bottom of a hole and a sliver of grey above that)。 What a piss off! Swirl by Swirl: Spirals in Nature is a great book for readers of all ages who are interested in the wonders of nature。 The poet does a wonderful job of describing the different spirals in nature。 I liked that the illustrations included labels of animals。 This book was awarded the Notable Children's Book award in 2012。  I was able to find several read alouds of this book online。 This book was also available at my local library。 This book would be great for primary students! Cute little book that introduces children to spirals。 I've never really thought about spirals as a shape。 It'd be interesting to teach spirals to preschoolers。 Cute little book that introduces children to spirals。 I've never really thought about spirals as a shape。 It'd be interesting to teach spirals to preschoolers。 。。。more

Spirals are amazing, fascinating, puzzling, beautiful, strong, clever, and extend into all areas of nature。 In this book, the reader gets to see many different spirals and what makes them useful。 Beautifully told and illustrated。

This non-fiction book shows different spirals in nature - from coiled snakes & millipedes, to spiral shells on nautilus & snails, to curled leaves on lady ferns, to horns on merino sheep。 (It also shows spirals in tornados and in the ocean, and in outer space。) Great concept book about spirals in nature。 With its sparse text it's perfect for preschoolers。 This non-fiction book shows different spirals in nature - from coiled snakes & millipedes, to spiral shells on nautilus & snails, to curled leaves on lady ferns, to horns on merino sheep。 (It also shows spirals in tornados and in the ocean, and in outer space。) Great concept book about spirals in nature。 With its sparse text it's perfect for preschoolers。 。。。more

I thought this was pretty wonderful and was more interested in it than my 3 and 5 year olds seemed to be。 I was afraid it would remind me of the non-children's Japanese horror book Uzumaki: Spiral into Horror, Vol。 1, but it didn't! I love this book。 This book talks about all things in nature that have a spiral shape and how it is strong。 I love the information from the book, but I love the illustrations the best。 I read this book online, but the illustrations are so full of texture I felt like I could touch it and feel the pictures。 Overall this is a very cute informative book with great illustrations!

An interesting children's book。 The illustrations are interesting, almost in the form of a scavenger hunt。 I found the illustrations to be a bit dark。 Would certainly start a child looking for spirals in nature。 An interesting children's book。 The illustrations are interesting, almost in the form of a scavenger hunt。 I found the illustrations to be a bit dark。 Would certainly start a child looking for spirals in nature。 。。。more

This book serves as a gorgeous introduction to a more complex shape than the usual ones。 BY giving natural examples of spirals, children can recognize the shape more easily and begin to search for spirals on their own。 One of my favorite details is that the names of all the plants, animals, and forces of nature depicted in the book are written beside them。The art of this book is one of its biggest selling points。 The art is dark and rich and colorful, drawing the eyes with its shading and swirli This book serves as a gorgeous introduction to a more complex shape than the usual ones。 BY giving natural examples of spirals, children can recognize the shape more easily and begin to search for spirals on their own。 One of my favorite details is that the names of all the plants, animals, and forces of nature depicted in the book are written beside them。The art of this book is one of its biggest selling points。 The art is dark and rich and colorful, drawing the eyes with its shading and swirling lines。 I would love to have this book as a texture book。 It looks like it would feel rough beneath my fingers, with ridges for all of the beautiful spirals。 I especially like the way the shapes all tuck into each other to fill the space of the page nicely。 I would definitely have this story in my classroom。 。。。more

This is one of the favorites of the infant I watch。 It is the right length, has a good cadence, and he is enamored by the pictures, which have the right amount of detail and contrast。 The natural message is lovely。 :)

Author Joyce Sidman and illustrator Beth Krommes explore the spiral shape in this poetic work of picture-book natural history, producing a work that will inform younger children, while also keeping them entertained。 From animals snuggling in their winter burrows to spiders weaving graceful webs, from nautiluses building their shells outward to hedgehogs curling themselves inward, spirals abound in nature。 Sometimes a temporary reaction to circumstance - the cold, a perceived threat - sometimes a Author Joyce Sidman and illustrator Beth Krommes explore the spiral shape in this poetic work of picture-book natural history, producing a work that will inform younger children, while also keeping them entertained。 From animals snuggling in their winter burrows to spiders weaving graceful webs, from nautiluses building their shells outward to hedgehogs curling themselves inward, spirals abound in nature。 Sometimes a temporary reaction to circumstance - the cold, a perceived threat - sometimes a cyclical motion - the pounding of the waves, the swirling of a whirlpool - and sometimes permanent - the final stage of a ram's horn - the spiral is always beautiful, something that is highlighted in Swirl By Swirl: Spirals in Nature。With a simple text - one sentence or phrase per page - and gorgeous scratchboard art, this is a wonderful work of natural history for the preschool set, introducing young children to a pattern that they will see over and over again in the world around them。 The animals, plants and forces (tidal whirlpools, tornadoes) shown in the illustrations are labelled, making the artwork as informative as the poetic text, while an afterword gives significantly more detail about each kind of spiral depicted。 Having greatly enjoyed some of Joyce Sidman's other picture-books, from Red Sings from Treetops: A Year in Colors to Ubiquitous: Celebrating Nature's Survivors, as well as Beth Krommes' Caldecott Medal-winning The House in the Night, I was interested to see what these two talented women would produce, when working together。 I was not disappointed! Educational and engaging, as well as beautiful, this is a book I would recommend to young nature lovers, as well as to fans of Krommes style of art。 。。。more
