Summary

Experience Real Change through Dependence on Christ

The Christian life is defined by growth。 Few question the call of the Bible to grow in godliness, but the answer to exactly how this happens is often elusive。

In his newest book, Deeper, pastor and author Dane Ortlund takes Christians into the deep structures of biblical teaching on how they grow in grace--most fundamentally, by enjoying all that is already theirs in Christ。 Ortlund brings believers into the fullness of Christ, the emptiness of self-reliance, and their need for union and communion with God。 This book makes the case that a believer's sanctification does not happen by doing more or becoming better, but by going deeper into the wondrous gospel truths that washed over them when they were first united to Christ。 Each of its 9 chapters encourages readers to fix their gaze on Jesus in the battle against sin, casting themselves upon his grace。

How does change happen in our lives? For Christians, change is a promised part of our life。 We are not only saved from sin through Jesus, but we are also being transformed into His likeness。 However, the intricacies of that change are hard to understand。 I have watched friends struggle with a sinful behavior that they don't understand why they can't stop; I've seen pastors perpetually wondering why they aren't seeing people in their congregation grow and mature in their faith。 The prevailing pre How does change happen in our lives? For Christians, change is a promised part of our life。 We are not only saved from sin through Jesus, but we are also being transformed into His likeness。 However, the intricacies of that change are hard to understand。 I have watched friends struggle with a sinful behavior that they don't understand why they can't stop; I've seen pastors perpetually wondering why they aren't seeing people in their congregation grow and mature in their faith。 The prevailing prescriptions for this conundrum have been primarily behavior-based--find a friend to hold you accountable, add more application to sermons so people will be encouraged to make changes in their lives--but in this book, Ortlund argues that effective change comes not as a result of focusing on our behavior, but rather as a result of looking toward Jesus, receiving his love, and remembering the beauty of gospel。 This was a delight to read for me as the idea of sanctification is something is regularly talked about at my local church, and as a perfectionist, I've often struggled with wanting to change and not knowing exactly how it happens。 In my experience, it is rare to find a Christian book that addresses change and sanctification without an emphasis on our behavior, and it is encouraging to read because it reminds us that we can't change our own hearts no matter how many tools and resources we might have。 I hope it will also be encouraging for pastors who deeply desire to change in their congregations, that they will be reminded that they can be faithful in preaching the gospel and encouraging their congregation to look towards Jesus, and also know that God is working to change hearts and sanctify the lives of the believers in the congregation。A big thank you to Dane Ortlund, Crossway, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and honestly review this book。 。。。more

"Deeper" is a book on sanctification。 It is a guide on how to grow in Christ。 Dane Ortlund helpfully shows us that change in the Christian life is all about going deeper。 He tells us that real change occurs through the life of God in the soul of man (echoing Henry Scougal)。Dane shows us that the real reason we continue in our sin is because of our low and domesticated view of Jesus。 Dane instead shows us a high view of Jesus。 He shows us seven facets of Christ which challenge our puny views of "Deeper" is a book on sanctification。 It is a guide on how to grow in Christ。 Dane Ortlund helpfully shows us that change in the Christian life is all about going deeper。 He tells us that real change occurs through the life of God in the soul of man (echoing Henry Scougal)。Dane shows us that the real reason we continue in our sin is because of our low and domesticated view of Jesus。 Dane instead shows us a high view of Jesus。 He shows us seven facets of Christ which challenge our puny views of Jesus。 Jesus is the one who rules, he saves, he befriends, he perseveres, he intercedes on our behalf, he is returning, and he is tender。 I was encouraged by this lofty vision of Jesus! Dane then points a mirror to our wicked hearts, pleading with us to examine our hearts, and be honest with our spiritual bankruptcy。 As we go into this pit of despair, he tells us not to remain there。 Instead, he encourages us to collapse into Jesus in repentance and faith。 Dane then dives into another precious doctrine: union with Christ。 He writes, "This, and not the doctrine of justification or reconciliation or adoption or any other important biblical teaching-is the controlling center, according to the New Testament, of what it means to be a Christian。" Union with Christ is the "umbrella doctrine" within which we enjoy the other benefits of salvation。 If we are in Christ, we enjoy the benefits of justification, sanctification, adoption, reconciliation, washing, redemption, resurrection, etc。Dane then reminds us of the depth of God's love for His children。 We will grow deeper as we understand deep in our hearts how much God loves us。 Even when we mess up, Dane reminds us that those who are in Christ "have never stepped outside the cascading waterfall of divine love" 。 It is indeed reassuring to think of God's love for us in Christ。 Dane also talks about another way to grow in Christ: being honest with other believers。 He talks about two kinds of dishonesty with fellow Christians, the explicit kind (outright lying) and the implicit kind (subtle lying)。In the penultimate chapter, Dane gets down to practical living。 He shows us how these Biblical truths can be believed and absorbed into our hearts - through Bible reading and prayer。 And he encourages us to think of these two practices using the metaphor of breathing。 "Reading the Bible is inhaling。 Prayer is exhaling" , he writes。 He reminds us that the Bible is good news for our weary souls。 The best way he suggests to read the Bible is prayerfully。 This is the most effective way to pray: turning our Bible reading into prayer。Overall, I found this a helpful book! This book is probably not in the same league as "Gentle and Lowly" but I expect this book to have wide readership as well。 I commend this book to all。 4/5 stars。*I received this complimentary book from NetGalley/Crossway, but was not required to write a positive review。* 。。。more

AmazingA refreshing drink of life-giving water。 It stirred my heart for the person of Jesus, reconnected me with the person of the Spirit inside me, and kept shoving guilt out of the way all along the way。

This book is a wonderful resource to every christian。 It felt more like a study to me for it is so rich。 Many times I’ve found myself reading and needing to pause to meditate。 As the title says, the book is a journey to deepen your relationship with Jesus。 Loved it!

How do Christians grow?Deeper seeks to answer this question and encourage you towards growth in Christ, but it’s not by doing more。 If you’re looking for a checklist, this isn’t your book。 Dane Ortlund points out what we so often miss about our growth—it’s not about being better, it’s about going deeper。You’ll walk away from this book more enamored with our Lord Jesus than before you picked it up—I can’t imagine a better reason to read this book than that。 **I received this book from Crossway Pu How do Christians grow?Deeper seeks to answer this question and encourage you towards growth in Christ, but it’s not by doing more。 If you’re looking for a checklist, this isn’t your book。 Dane Ortlund points out what we so often miss about our growth—it’s not about being better, it’s about going deeper。You’ll walk away from this book more enamored with our Lord Jesus than before you picked it up—I can’t imagine a better reason to read this book than that。 **I received this book from Crossway Publishers through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。** 。。。more
