Summary

A destitute man comes looking for help from his cousin, and uncovers some mysteries。

Phyllida Beasley is forty years old, a mousy spinster who devotes her life to caring for her brother, and doing good works in the parish。 She’s in a rut, but too timid to set herself free from her domineering friends and her own sense of duty。 When a newcomer to the village draws her into his schemes, he challenges her to take a new direction。 Can she summon the courage to step out of the shadows, when it means facing up to her terrible secret?

Peter Winslade’s career as a banker is over, after his bank failed and left him destitute。 He’s forced to throw himself on the mercy of his cousin, the Squire, repaying his kindness by unravelling his tangled accounts。 His helper is just the sort of woman he could easily fall in love with—can he persuade her to break away and embark on a great adventure? It could be the making of her, but it could also destroy her utterly。 How can he protect her from her own past?

This is a complete story with a happy ever after。 Book 4 of a 6 book series。 A traditional Regency romance, drawing room rather than bedroom。

Brilliant!Wonderful, yet again。 After several books, one feels one knows the characters, so it really matters about what happens to them。 And what is wrong with Cass? I can’t wait for the next book, to perhaps discover why she keeps being ill。

Series keeps getting better This series is by far the best from the author。 Although I do believe the first novel of the series was the best, this book too was wonderful to read。 I'm hoping the next two will be equally entertaining to read。 Series keeps getting better This series is by far the best from the author。 Although I do believe the first novel of the series was the best, this book too was wonderful to read。 I'm hoping the next two will be equally entertaining to read。 。。。more

another gemThis whole series has been a little out of the ordinary - no predictable regency romances here - and this is another corker。 Irritatingly, I have to wait for the next one to cone out before enjoying such a splendid read again。 Thank you Ms Kingswood。

I seriously can NOT believe the entire book was about a murder and included Willerton-Forbes, yet ended with the murder unsolved! We unfurled the tale of the baron and the bastard。 The wager and the tight fisted landlord。 How a impoverished gentle bred woman became fodder for the peer classes to humiliate and degrade。

Beautifully written and completely engrossingMary Kingswood always captivates me as a reader and this book was no different。 If you've been following the series, she delightfully continues to build her world and the characters within。 And whether this is your first book in the series or not, her plots are intriguing, her romances delightfully unique and individualized to each aspiring couple, and her writing breathtaking。 I truly enjoyed this book and just wish I didn't read them so fast! I received an ARC of this book and as usual I loved it。 Mary Kingswood delivers intricate mysteries and diverse characters。 Her heroes and heroines are not stereotypical and for that reason they are interesting and engaging。 I enjoy the continuing storylines and recurring characters。 The two main characters in this novel Peter and Phyllida discover hidden secrets and treasure as they delve through history。 Along the way they also learn more about themselves and each other。 I couldn’t put this bo I received an ARC of this book and as usual I loved it。 Mary Kingswood delivers intricate mysteries and diverse characters。 Her heroes and heroines are not stereotypical and for that reason they are interesting and engaging。 I enjoy the continuing storylines and recurring characters。 The two main characters in this novel Peter and Phyllida discover hidden secrets and treasure as they delve through history。 Along the way they also learn more about themselves and each other。 I couldn’t put this book down and I’m looking forward to the next with great anticipation。 。。。more

I volunteered to be an ARC reader because I love Mary Kingswoods' books。 She shows the nitty gritty side of the time, upstairs and down, without a single bodice being ripped, at least not in livid description。 Not that her books don't get exciting。 Stranger at the Manor had me at the edge of my chair more than once。 Old friends were there, and new ones introduced。 Perplexing mysteries and burgeoning romance。 I can't wait until the next one。 In fact, I'm rereading some if her earlier books and se I volunteered to be an ARC reader because I love Mary Kingswoods' books。 She shows the nitty gritty side of the time, upstairs and down, without a single bodice being ripped, at least not in livid description。 Not that her books don't get exciting。 Stranger at the Manor had me at the edge of my chair more than once。 Old friends were there, and new ones introduced。 Perplexing mysteries and burgeoning romance。 I can't wait until the next one。 In fact, I'm rereading some if her earlier books and seeing how the characters are inter twined。 。。。more

I received a prerelease copy of this book and am absolutely delighted that I did! The story had delightful twists, and kept me turning the pages until the end。 It was satisfying to see the previously mousy and nondescript Phyllida become the woman she truly is。 I’m eagerly awaiting the next Strangers installment。

I read a pre-release of this book。 It is a very enjoyable read, I could not put it down。 I appreciate that the main characters developed by this author are not all young debutantes or aristocrats。 In Stranger at the Manor, we learn greater depth of the Winslade family, dig into the character of Miss Beasley, and interact with the other characters from previous stories。 There is an underlying mystery of the Saxby’s that continues to unfold, resolution to be found in future stories。 This book is I read a pre-release of this book。 It is a very enjoyable read, I could not put it down。 I appreciate that the main characters developed by this author are not all young debutantes or aristocrats。 In Stranger at the Manor, we learn greater depth of the Winslade family, dig into the character of Miss Beasley, and interact with the other characters from previous stories。 There is an underlying mystery of the Saxby’s that continues to unfold, resolution to be found in future stories。 This book is a great addition to the Stranger series。 Because family trees and maps are included, this story can be read as a standalone。 However, if you start with this one, you will desire to know more and read additional books in the series and may even search other books the author has written to get to know other characters who play important roles in the story。 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book about Miss Beasley and Peter。 The author made these two so very human and likable。 She did an excellent job of interweaving all the characters that we have come to know and adding more details to an ongoing mystery。 She had several intrigues on the side that she so cleverly revealed throughout the book。 It kept you reading。 Despite an ongoing mystery to be solved this was a very satisfying complete stand alone book you will thoroughly enjoy as you read about how Pe I thoroughly enjoyed this book about Miss Beasley and Peter。 The author made these two so very human and likable。 She did an excellent job of interweaving all the characters that we have come to know and adding more details to an ongoing mystery。 She had several intrigues on the side that she so cleverly revealed throughout the book。 It kept you reading。 Despite an ongoing mystery to be solved this was a very satisfying complete stand alone book you will thoroughly enjoy as you read about how Peter and Miss Beasley find their happy ever after。 I was an arc reader and cannot recommend this book enough for an excellent read。 。。。more

Another engrossing adventure by Mary Kingswood!I so enjoyed this book! It contained everything I enjoy in a satisfying story。 A romance - and delightfully, it was a romance between two people who had thought themselves as being quite beyond even the possibility of love and marriage。 There were many exciting happenings in the village, mysteries (up to and even including a murder。。。or two!) to be solved and a very satisfying conclusion that still whets the appetite for the next installment!I recei Another engrossing adventure by Mary Kingswood!I so enjoyed this book! I received an ARC of this book and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, as I do all of Mary Kingswood’s books, some of them more than once。 In this one, as with the others, I felt as if I were there in the story, with real people dealing with real life problems, with not a hint of any fairytale elements。 It was enlightening to observe the transformation of the heroine from spinster ‘mouse’ to beautiful adventuress as she discovered, with help from the hero, who she really was。 My only I received an ARC of this book and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, as I do all of Mary Kingswood’s books, some of them more than once。 In this one, as with the others, I felt as if I were there in the story, with real people dealing with real life problems, with not a hint of any fairytale elements。 It was enlightening to observe the transformation of the heroine from spinster ‘mouse’ to beautiful adventuress as she discovered, with help from the hero, who she really was。 My only concern was for the squire’s children—eight of them—who, save for the oldest, are not mentioned until after their father’s return from Bath where he’s been seeking yet another wife。 My grandmother heart was worried, not being apprised of where they were or how they were doing throughout the story, that they might be being neglected。 Other than that, “Stranger at the Manor” met all my expectations on every level。 I look forward to reading book 5 in the series when it comes out。 。。。more

Once started I could not put it down。 Who would have thought that a timid spinster of 40 would get her own love story。 Peter and Phyllida made a lovely couple and it was a delight to see her character grow throughout their story。 This was such a lovely gentle read and their journey to happy ever after was full of humour, romance and mystery。 This series just gets better and better and it is lovely catching up with the other residents of Upper Maeswood。 I would highly recommend this book and am r Once started I could not put it down。 Who would have thought that a timid spinster of 40 would get her own love story。 Peter and Phyllida made a lovely couple and it was a delight to see her character grow throughout their story。 This was such a lovely gentle read and their journey to happy ever after was full of humour, romance and mystery。 This series just gets better and better and it is lovely catching up with the other residents of Upper Maeswood。 I would highly recommend this book and am really looking forward to the next in the series。 I received an advance copy of this book from the author, but the review is all my own。 。。。more

Ms。 Kingswood has continued her tradition of intricate mysteries, brave heroines and gentle gentlemen。 Phylida and Peter discover hidden secrets, hidden treasure and hidden courage as they work their way through layers of history to resolve their personal shames and heart destroying events of the past。 The minor characters are marvelous, especially the "sinless" busybody。 This is not a rapid read but instead one to take slowly so nothing is missed。 I highly recommend this volume and look for the Ms。 Kingswood has continued her tradition of intricate mysteries, brave heroines and gentle gentlemen。 Phylida and Peter discover hidden secrets, hidden treasure and hidden courage as they work their way through layers of history to resolve their personal shames and heart destroying events of the past。 The minor characters are marvelous, especially the "sinless" busybody。 This is not a rapid read but instead one to take slowly so nothing is missed。 I highly recommend this volume and look for the next, especially since I recieved it as an ARC read so now must wait longer than the rest of Ms Kingswood's new writings。 Nonetheless I am grateful for the opportunity to get an early read of this great account in the series。 。。。more
