Summary

The John J。 Harvey fireboat was the largest, fastest, shiniest fireboatof its time, but by 1995, the city didn't need old fireboats anymore。 So the Harvey retired, until a group of friends decided to save it from the scrap heap。 Then, one sunny September day in 2001, something so horrible happened that the whole world shook。 And a call came from the fire department, asking if the Harvey could battle the roaring flames。 In this inspiring true story, Maira Kalman brings a New York City icon to life and proves that old heroes never die。

This is a historical fiction picture book about the refurbishment of an old fireboat and its use in putting out fires on 9/11。 It brought tears to my eyes。 For upper elementary to adult。

Oh my gosh! I cried! This is such a good story of a boat that everyone thought was useless until it wasn’t。 Not only is that a good message, but the history is important as well。 I like that the book takes a look farther back in time to share other fun world events like the invention of Snickers and Babe Ruth hitting his 611th home run。 Another plus to this book is that it doesn’t get into gruesome details。 This would be great for my third grade class。

Definitely would recommend for all of those young kids who LOVE cars, trucks, boats, etc。 But if they don't, I would probably shy away from this one。 Definitely would recommend for all of those young kids who LOVE cars, trucks, boats, etc。 But if they don't, I would probably shy away from this one。 。。。more

Different perspective on 9/11。 A retired fire boat is repurposed by a group of New Yorkers and volunteers to help put out fires on 9/11。

Such a sweet book about a restored fire boat that almost went to the junkyard but instead was able to be used to help put out the World Trade Center Fires。 Read it aloud with my 5, 8 and 10 year olds。 It’s a perfect 9/11 read for kids combined with “America Is Under Attack” by Don Brown and “ The Man who walked between the Towers” by Mordecai Gerstein。

Great picture book for kindergarteners that tells the story of a restored fireboat’s help during the September 11th attack on the Twin Towers。

Commissioned in 1931, the John J。 Harvey was the sleekest and fastest fireboat of its day, racing around New York City to put out fires。 After many years of service it was retired, and was due to be scrapped when a group of friends purchased it, refurbished it, and had it declared a historical landmark。 No one expected that it would ever be used to fight fires again。 Then, on September 11th, 2001, New York City was attacked and the water pipes around the Twin Towers were damaged。 Suddenly the Jo Commissioned in 1931, the John J。 Harvey was the sleekest and fastest fireboat of its day, racing around New York City to put out fires。 After many years of service it was retired, and was due to be scrapped when a group of friends purchased it, refurbished it, and had it declared a historical landmark。 No one expected that it would ever be used to fight fires again。 Then, on September 11th, 2001, New York City was attacked and the water pipes around the Twin Towers were damaged。 Suddenly the John J。 Harvey was needed again。。。Beautifully written and illustrated, Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J。 Harvey had me tearing up on more than one occasion。 I was already familiar with the amazing story of the many boats that came to the aid of the people trapped in lower Manhattan on that day, ferrying over 500,000 people to safer locations in New Jersey, Connecticut and elsewhere in New York state in the largest maritime rescue in history。 My mother was on one of those boats, and ended up in New Jersey。 There's a powerful documentary about it, BOATLIFT - An Untold Tale of 9/11 Resilience, that I recommend。 That said, the story of the John J。 Harvey was unknown to me, and I am glad to have learnt about it through author/illustrator Maira Kalman's wonderful book。 The text was understated but emotionally resonant, the artwork powerful。 Recommended to those seeking children's books about 9/11, and about the resilience of the human spirit。 。。。more

This true story was very touching。 The story of a fireboat in NYC it is informative and inspiring。 The story is a bit dark for younger children, as the fireboat came out of retirement to rescue people on 9/11。 The whole family enjoyed this one (and some of us teared up at the end)。

Wow, I knew about this story but forgot。 Fireboat tells the story of the John J。 Harvey excellently, from its “birth” to how it helped on 9/11。

The illustration style was perfect for this story。 And what a story。

wonderfully drawn and simply told it brought tears to my eyes。

Maira Kalman is one of my favorite artists, so when I found a copy of Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J。 Harvey on the street, I clearly had to bring it home。 I don't know why it took me so long to get around to actually reading it: I like Kalman, I like boats, I like books about NYC。 Well, no matter: I finally read it, and aww, what a sweet/touching picture book this is。 I actually got to take a (free!) ride on the John J。 Harvey in 2010, so I think I must have learned the boat's st Maira Kalman is one of my favorite artists, so when I found a copy of Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J。 Harvey on the street, I clearly had to bring it home。 I don't know why it took me so long to get around to actually reading it: I like Kalman, I like boats, I like books about NYC。 Well, no matter: I finally read it, and aww, what a sweet/touching picture book this is。 I actually got to take a (free!) ride on the John J。 Harvey in 2010, so I think I must have learned the boat's story at that time, but I'd forgotten。 The John J。 Harvey was built in 1931 and served as a fireboat in NYC for decades, fighting fires on the piers when they were crowded with passenger ships and cargo ships—but was due to be sold for scrap after being retired in 1995。 Instead, the boat was bought and restored, and ended up being called into service on September 11, 2001—first to ferry people uptown, and then to actually pump water at the World Trade Center site。 The gouache artwork in this book is classic Maira Kalman (I find her style really quirky and charming), and I like the way Kalman tells the story, too, starting with the background of what else was happening the same year the John J。 Harvey was first launched and then moving on to the boat itself, and then to the events of 9/11。 From other work I've seen of hers, it seems like she's very much interested in stories told through things from the past, and also in how things from the past can still be interesting/useful/beautiful, and this book fits in with that sensibility perfectly。 。。。more

Loved this book because it was written and illustrated by my favorite author/artist。。。and because it told a sweet story of one of the ways goodness played out during the days following the attack on NYCs World Trade Center。 Plus。。。it's a good reminder about recycling and salvaging, and being not so quick to toss things aside or in the dump heap。 Loved this book because it was written and illustrated by my favorite author/artist。。。and because it told a sweet story of one of the ways goodness played out during the days following the attack on NYCs World Trade Center。 Plus。。。it's a good reminder about recycling and salvaging, and being not so quick to toss things aside or in the dump heap。 。。。more

This children book talks about what happened on September 11,2001 the day we were attacked by terrorist。 I really enjoyed how the author told the story about a little red boat who helped a lot of people get across throughout the day。 While the little red boat is having a nice normal day then he gets an unexpected call。 In this story the boat is called by the fire department to come help put out the fire because they can't do it alone。 This children book talks about what happened on September 11,2001 the day we were attacked by terrorist。 I really enjoyed how the author told the story about a little red boat who helped a lot of people get across throughout the day。 While the little red boat is having a nice normal day then he gets an unexpected call。 In this story the boat is called by the fire department to come help put out the fire because they can't do it alone。 。。。more

This children's book is perfect when needing to discuss the events of 9/11 in a positive way。 Students at such a young age don't know what the world out there is capable of but informing them by using a very well illustrated book like this one makes it easy。 This children's book is perfect when needing to discuss the events of 9/11 in a positive way。 Students at such a young age don't know what the world out there is capable of but informing them by using a very well illustrated book like this one makes it easy。 。。。more

This boat was incredibly intriguing to me! It showed the journey of the tugboat when it became unused due to other inventions。 The day of 9/11 came and the tugboat saved a mass amount of people。 This would be an amazing book to bring awareness to 9/11 and the heroes that were present that day!

I've pulled a good number of Sept 11 books -- picture books to adult nonfiction -- seeing the importance and value in each to tell this important story。 While the book *Fireboat* is a good one, it is more a story of the boat than the story of 9/11。 I've pulled a good number of Sept 11 books -- picture books to adult nonfiction -- seeing the importance and value in each to tell this important story。 While the book *Fireboat* is a good one, it is more a story of the boat than the story of 9/11。 。。。more

A beautiful book to use to introduce such a hard topic to students。 Sometimes even in the darkest of times, we must find the light。 Students still learn a piece of history by celebrating the heroes instead of focusing on a terrible tragedy。 Great book for teachers in a lower grade classroom (pre-k-2nd) to introduce and talk about 9/11。 The illustrations are beautiful and work well with the text。

Fireboat is a easy and respectful book to use to introduce the tragedy of 9/11。 This is always a hard subject to discuss, especially with little children。 This book not only discusses the Twin Towers but also the first responders and their heroic acts。 The John J。 Harvey and its crew helped save many lives that fatal day。

This book was a great way to bring light to 9/11。 This is probably my favorite book I have read on that day! It included a story about an old harbor boat being refinished and used for good! It is an honorable boat and an honorable story。

This book is a really good book to read to our children to inform them about 9/11。 There is a TEKS that require the teacher to teach children about 9/11 and I believe this is a great book because it helps us remember all the good people。 Especially if the children are in 3rd grade and below。

Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J。 Harvey is a book about an old fireboat in New York that was used to put out fires in the early to mid-1900s。 As time went on the John J。 Harvey wasn't as much of a necessity, but rather than letting it get sold for scraps a group of friends decided to fix it up so they could bring it out on the water。 The Harvey, thought of as useless to many when it came to fighting fires, proved everyone wrong on September 11, 2001。 On that day the city needed all Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J。 Harvey is a book about an old fireboat in New York that was used to put out fires in the early to mid-1900s。 As time went on the John J。 Harvey wasn't as much of a necessity, but rather than letting it get sold for scraps a group of friends decided to fix it up so they could bring it out on the water。 The Harvey, thought of as useless to many when it came to fighting fires, proved everyone wrong on September 11, 2001。 On that day the city needed all hands on deck and the old John J。 Harvey did its part to help fight the fires for four days and nights and received the National Preservation Award。 The overall theme of Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J。 Harvey is to not judge a book by its cover。 Most people thought that the old fireboat from the 30s was useless, but in an emergency like 9/11 the boat did what it was meant to do, which seemed impossible considering how old the Harvey was。 I was very inspired by this story after reading it。 It was so nice to read about normal, everyday people getting together to fight in the midst of such a tragedy。 Though the Harvey obviously isn't a living thing, I still felt so proud of the boat and its ability to do the unexpected and act like such a hero, along with the people on the boat too of course!I would definitely recommend this book because it tells such an inspirational story, and from a point of view that you don't often hear when it comes to 9/11。 The boat and its crew are heroes from 9/11 that I'd assume many don't know about。 It shows that when needed, anything and anyone can step up to the plate and help。 The story of the John J。 Harvey is a very hopeful one about an otherwise extremely tragic event, which makes it a good way to introduce 9/11 to young children。 。。。more
