Summary

A book about the power of love and resistance from New York Times bestselling authors Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed。

YES

Jamie Goldberg is cool with volunteering for his local state senate candidate—as long as he’s behind the scenes。 When it comes to speaking to strangers (or, let’s face it, speaking at all to almost anyone) Jamie’s a choke artist。 There’s no way he’d ever knock on doors to ask people for their votes…until he meets Maya。

NO

Maya Rehman’s having the worst Ramadan ever。 Her best friend is too busy to hang out, her summer trip is canceled, and now her parents are separating。 Why her mother thinks the solution to her problems is political canvassing—with some awkward dude she hardly knows—is beyond her。

MAYBE SO

Going door to door isn’t exactly glamorous, but maybe it’s not the worst thing in the world。 After all, the polls are getting closer—and so are Maya and Jamie。 Mastering local activism is one thing。 Navigating the cross-cultural crush of the century is another thing entirely。

Editor Reviews

"Buoyed by humor, enriched by a colorful supporting cast, and strung through with a charming (and charmingly awkward) romantic subplot, Jamie and Maya's story, their miscommunications, and their true connection will win hearts and inspire action。"

I wanted to like it but I never really got hooked。

Very YA。 Classical build-up with two points of view, two different people fall in love, meets some obstacle, some people are gay, and it’s ok。 The book is well written, very 2020 with elections and campaining。 You get exactly whar you want from reading this book; a good time。 But no surprises。

This book has been on my radar for a while for the cover alone plus I have enjoyed Becky Albertalli’s books in the past。 This one was a delight。 I haven’t related to a character in a while but I felt so connected to Jamie- his awkward shyness, desire to make a change, target loving self was just a bit too relatable。 Maya was also such a pleasant character。 This book tackled more subjects than I thought it would。 Jamie and Maya’s relationship was just too cute for me to handle。 Also Jamie and his This book has been on my radar for a while for the cover alone plus I have enjoyed Becky Albertalli’s books in the past。 This one was a delight。 I haven’t related to a character in a while but I felt so connected to Jamie- his awkward shyness, desire to make a change, target loving self was just a bit too relatable。 Maya was also such a pleasant character。 This book tackled more subjects than I thought it would。 Jamie and Maya’s relationship was just too cute for me to handle。 Also Jamie and his sister Sophie’s relationship melted my heart。 The family dynamics from both Jamie and Maya I also enjoyed exploring from this book。 The campaign also hooked me- especially with the special election in Georgia coming up。 The hope that these authors created at the end just helped to remind me that the work is far from over and change can still happen。 What held this book back from a full 5 stars was Gabe- I found him too annoying especially towards the end。 But this book was a 4。5 stars and my heart is full with love and fluff which is exactly what I needed。 。。。more

Loved this! So timely with our recent election cycle。 Highly recommend if you like a good romance and are interested in becoming more politically active。

I laughed, I cried, felt sacred and defeated but in the end I’m hopeful。☺️

Meh。 did not finish。 Found the politics to be a little overwhelming and stereotypical: not all Republicans are cruel, harshly-speaking bigots。

Olivia

Absolutely adorable! The ending felt a bit rushed but other than that it was a very enjoyable teen romance。

This wasn't something that I particularly enjoyed, and I suppose it's partially due to the slightly political nature of the plot since I'm not familiar with politics in the US it was hard to get very involved in it。Came here for the romance and I felt that it was a subpar development of the entire relationship, stemming from the rather shallow character development。 Jamie's character development was not very significant, nor does he seem to have much personality other than being awkward and bad This wasn't something that I particularly enjoyed, and I suppose it's partially due to the slightly political nature of the plot since I'm not familiar with politics in the US it was hard to get very involved in it。Came here for the romance and I felt that it was a subpar development of the entire relationship, stemming from the rather shallow character development。 Jamie's character development was not very significant, nor does he seem to have much personality other than being awkward and bad at talking。 And if I am to be harsh, the writing style and voice of both characters felt a little bit too much like the kinds of stories that 13 year old girls on certain writing sites that i shall not mention start with when they are first getting into writing。 I also felt like the constant references to pop culture was very forced and did not make it relatable or funny。As a whole I do acknowledge the efforts made for representation for POC (Maya is a South Asian Muslim girl), and I am not in the position to judge how well this was done, but I will say that effort was made, and I see that。 This book was slightly disappointing since I had thoroughly enjoyed Becky Albertalli's previous books, and it is not something that I would read again。 。。。more

I was totally surprised for this one。 I had not expected it but I still really liked it。 It was not top, but yet surprisingly good。 Nice story and really good rep!

To be honest, when I started with this book, I didn't know whether or not I will like it at all。 I mean, this is my first time reading a fiction book that's related to politics。 Well, it turned out quite well。 At the start, I honestly wasn't that intrigued, but as the plot continues to develop, as I got to understand all the characters, I started to like it。 I love how the authors doesn't try to craft any characters into being perfect。 (Okay, maybe except InstaGramm and Boomer, but of course the To be honest, when I started with this book, I didn't know whether or not I will like it at all。 I mean, this is my first time reading a fiction book that's related to politics。 Well, it turned out quite well。 At the start, I honestly wasn't that intrigued, but as the plot continues to develop, as I got to understand all the characters, I started to like it。 I love how the authors doesn't try to craft any characters into being perfect。 (Okay, maybe except InstaGramm and Boomer, but of course they're perfect!) I love all the flaws and of course in this book, the determination and hard work people put in for whatever they do。 I love the Maya and Jamie interactions, and the build up of their relationships。 I really love all the problems they had to overcome in this story, relating with friendships, family, politics, technology, and religion。 (There were literal tears coming from my eyes during Sara and Maya's fight。) This book has a story plot I've never read before, and I think it was interesting。 It was a good read! :) 。。。more

By The Cover

Becky Albertalli just knows what I want when I read a ya contemporary romance, what can I say? And apparently, so does Aisha Saeed。 Their voices blended beautifully, and I loved a lot of the side characters, the plot points, most mainly our main characters inner thoughts and relationship, and the politics, message, and ending。 Probably a 4。5 stars but I’d round up。

This book was really good。 Though it was funny and heartfelt you could feel all the emotions the author wanted you to feel and you learned about the world and the problems in it。 Racism is a big problem right now and though Becky Albertalli wrote a fictional book about it, it still teaches about the problems different races face about the way their faith is。 The author also created scenes where you wanted to scream at characters or punch them and sometimes were just reading about it, will make y This book was really good。 Though it was funny and heartfelt you could feel all the emotions the author wanted you to feel and you learned about the world and the problems in it。 Racism is a big problem right now and though Becky Albertalli wrote a fictional book about it, it still teaches about the problems different races face about the way their faith is。 The author also created scenes where you wanted to scream at characters or punch them and sometimes were just reading about it, will make you feel better and just want to live in that moment。 Overall, this was a very heartfelt book and tugged at the corners of your heart to do something about racism。 。。。more

Finally, a teen rom-com that I actually loved! I love Jamie, and Maya, and Jamie and Maya together。 Everything was cute。 And the politics seems informative rather than overbearing (although to be fair, in picking up the book you knew you were in for a lot of politics)。 I appreciated the fact that even though the main characters are all staunch Democrats, they show lots of different people on both sides of the political spectrum。

A little cheesy and the drama seemed so silly, but I guess that's high school for you。 But overall, I really enjoyed the rather unique story line and it was amazing to see the different representation。 A little cheesy and the drama seemed so silly, but I guess that's high school for you。 But overall, I really enjoyed the rather unique story line and it was amazing to see the different representation。 。。。more

Really 4。5 stars! This book was not only a slow burning love story, but an action call about local government。 Especially in this crazy political year, Albertalli and Saeed delivered a great representation of how young adults can change the world。 Whether they are able to vote or not。 The characters were relatable and inclusive and really helped open my eyes two communities I have never been exposed to before。 Fantastic read!!

Very cute romance following two teens who get involved in a local election。 Lots of cute moments that made me smile and good supporting characters。

I loved everything about about this book! The characters, the plot, and the messages were all really well done 💙 The one downside to this book was it made one plotical party seem pretty evil with the exception of one scene at the end。 While I don't agree with the generalized vilification I do understand the POV。 So minus that everything else about this was wonderful! This book has a very interesting premise, and the way it explores reactions to contemporary politics was fascinating。 Jamie and Maya are great, and there's a lot to like about their dynamic。 There was an occasional clunkiness to it, like things were almost working but not quite right。 Overall, though, a really fun YA romance。 This book has a very interesting premise, and the way it explores reactions to contemporary politics was fascinating。 Jamie and Maya are great, and there's a lot to like about their dynamic。 There was an occasional clunkiness to it, like things were almost working but not quite right。 Overall, though, a really fun YA romance。 。。。more
