Summary

At seventy-two, Alice Mertens is not finished with life。 She is starting a new one。 A new mission。 Alice is part of the first class of Friendship Bench peer counselors at a local hospital。 She will meet folks in the shade, hear their troubles and cheer for their triumphs。

Never mind that she has no grandkids, Alice and the Friendship Bench in this Midwestern city are following the inspiration of an organization in Zimbabwe。 Grannies there sat on benches in public parks and listened to the traumas and trials of people who survived wars and famine。 And they offered hope to people struggling to survive their daily lives。

In Alice’s town, people have survived the pandemic and are ready to get out and get together。 At least to sit on a bench outside。 She offers consolation and hope that she has absorbed from her years of faith and her personal prayer life。

The genesis of the Friendship Bench in Africa was a lack of mental health professionals。 In the United States, there are certainly more counselors than in Zimbabwe。 But there are people in Alice’s city who are shy about meeting with psychologists or psychiatrists, even if some of them folks would surely benefit from expert treatment。

At home, Alice and her husband Randal are getting back to their life as it was before the pandemic。 Even more, they are opening to new opportunities。 Retired but not resigned。

I feel like I made a new friend in Alice。 I'd enjoy sitting next to her on her bench to chat and sort through life。 This is a fun, easy read! I feel like I made a new friend in Alice。 I'd enjoy sitting next to her on her bench to chat and sort through life。 This is a fun, easy read! 。。。more

A number of years ago I saw a picture of a bench in a serene setting that said: "every bench has a story - come sit with me and tell me yours。" The idea of sitting on a bench, meeting a stranger and being the listening ear and compassionate heart they are needed, and helping them through a painful or difficult time has always appealed to me。 And who doesn't need someone they feel safe to share their heart with at times? Life can be hard。 Alice's Friendship Bench is such a story, and I was most excited to read Jeffery's latest book - I was not disappointed。 I also learned some 'stuff' about myself as I turned the pages。 I could relate to Alice and her nights being the best times for 'thinking and learning' - and sadly, when your church family does not meet your need for support when going through rough waters or a loss, and how one can become bitter - only I was not aware it was bitterness I was feeling until I read Alice's experience。 So thank you Alice and Jeffery!! I recommend this book! ( a reader from Victoria, B。C。 Canada) 。。。more

I loved Alice’s Friendship bench。 For people to be able to get together and talk things over, share things would be great。 I think this idea would be a solution for lonely people that need someone to talk to。 Alice was a good listener and cared deeply for the people she talked to

I received this book for an honest review。 Jeffrey McClain Jones is probably my very favorite author! This book is different than ones he usually writes。。。 if there is a usually。。。 LOL。 This is based on a true place with a real ministry。 A Granny ministry for those that are unable to get normal help with mental help。

Alice starts a new phase in her life with a fledgling ministry。 Sitting on a bench listening to people with problems。 Allowing them the space and time to work out what steps to take next。 Along the way meeting her clients Alice has to face her own issues。 At home she tries to motivate her husband Ranald who rarely leaves his seat。 Together they face challenges surrounding their church At times poor Alice finds it hard not to go to far with her advice and gets overly invested in one person in par Alice starts a new phase in her life with a fledgling ministry。 Sitting on a bench listening to people with problems。 Allowing them the space and time to work out what steps to take next。 Along the way meeting her clients Alice has to face her own issues。 At home she tries to motivate her husband Ranald who rarely leaves his seat。 Together they face challenges surrounding their church At times poor Alice finds it hard not to go to far with her advice and gets overly invested in one person in particular。 I found this book delightful。 The characters were well written and believable。 A follow up would be welcomed。I received this book for free and all views expressed are my own。 。。。more
