Summary

A breakthrough in human cloning becomes one woman’s waking nightmare in a mind-bending thriller by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Gibson Vaughn series。

In the near future, advances in medicine and quantum computing make human cloning a reality。 For the wealthy, cheating death is the ultimate luxury。 To anticloning militants, it’s an abomination against nature。 For young Constance “Con” D’Arcy, who was gifted her own clone by her late aunt, it’s terrifying。

After a routine monthly upload of her consciousness—stored for that inevitable transition—something goes wrong。 When Con wakes up in the clinic, it’s eighteen months later。 Her recent memories are missing。 Her original, she’s told, is dead。 If that’s true, what does that make her

The secrets of Con’s disorienting new life are buried deep。 So are those of how and why she died。 To uncover the truth, Con is retracing the last days she can recall, crossing paths with a detective who’s just as curious。 On the run, she needs someone she can trust。 Because only one thing has become clear: Con is being marked for murder—all over again。

Investigate your own murderImagine waking up to the news that you just died。 You are a clone, and by the way, the people that just cloned you made a mistake and want to unmake you。 Think fast! This book is a nonstop ride that starts on page one and doesn't stop until the very end。 Great mix of sci-fi, murder mystery, and action。This is a great stand alone novel, but I would also love to see more in a series in this universe。Some graphic violence, so recemmend for teens and up。 Language is clean a Investigate your own murderImagine waking up to the news that you just died。 You are a clone, and by the way, the people that just cloned you made a mistake and want to unmake you。 Think fast! This book is a nonstop ride that starts on page one and doesn't stop until the very end。 Great mix of sci-fi, murder mystery, and action。This is a great stand alone novel, but I would also love to see more in a series in this universe。Some graphic violence, so recemmend for teens and up。 Language is clean and there is no sexual content。 。。。more

A very imaginative clone story。It's been a while since I've read sci-fi book that caught my imagination。 Clones have been a dry topic for me until this story。 Each chapter kept me guessing what was coming。 I was never bored。 The interesting thing about this book was that i could not tell if it was written by a man or woman, what race the characters were, who were the good guys。 The only constant was that the wealthy people were the bad guys。 All in all, a very fun read。 A very imaginative clone story。It's been a while since I've read sci-fi book that caught my imagination。 Clones have been a dry topic for me until this story。 Each chapter kept me guessing what was coming。 I was never bored。 The interesting thing about this book was that i could not tell if it was written by a man or woman, what race the characters were, who were the good guys。 The only constant was that the wealthy people were the bad guys。 All in all, a very fun read。 。。。more

Disclaimer: because I love to read and respect how hard it is to finish a book, I only give 5 stars。 However:A total sci-fi mind assault, I could easily envision this well-thought-out, futuristic amble through science fiction ethics being a film。 Enjoyable, accessible; Asimov may not bow down but ‘Constance’ did the trick。 She kept me guessing, thinking and smiling all the way to a dramatic denouement I didn’t see coming。 Don’t miss a family wake to read it but it’s worth 10 hours of your life, Disclaimer: because I love to read and respect how hard it is to finish a book, I only give 5 stars。 However:A total sci-fi mind assault, I could easily envision this well-thought-out, futuristic amble through science fiction ethics being a film。 Enjoyable, accessible; Asimov may not bow down but ‘Constance’ did the trick。 She kept me guessing, thinking and smiling all the way to a dramatic denouement I didn’t see coming。 Don’t miss a family wake to read it but it’s worth 10 hours of your life, which 10 are up to you。 。。。more

Brilliant work!I started this book yesterday, allowed time for sleep and chores, then finished it about five minutes ago。 Amazing work! I would describe this work as intriguing, sophisticated, ethically challenging and darn fine entertainment! Thank you, Mr。 FitzSimmons…

Not my kind of musicLike most SF, a mindbending set of facts provide a platform for the story。 In this case, it's human cloning and its implications。 Fascinating stuff, almost believable, but the plot arc is less so。 And the layering on of a music career cut short by tragedy seemed like a different story that got haphazardly glued to the clone saga。 Not my kind of musicLike most SF, a mindbending set of facts provide a platform for the story。 In this case, it's human cloning and its implications。 Fascinating stuff, almost believable, but the plot arc is less so。 And the layering on of a music career cut short by tragedy seemed like a different story that got haphazardly glued to the clone saga。 。。。more

Interesting but too long a scfiThis was very riveting, until it went on too long and became a cumbersome read。 I like scifi novels and had the author condensed it by 30 per cent it would have been more enjoyable。

Interesting concept but not as well done as I hoped。 Hate when characters don't ask all the questions they should, go somewhere else and then come back to ask the question that could have provided them with all the info they needed。 And while I appreciated the attempt to be diverse, it was very heavy handed。 Interesting concept but not as well done as I hoped。 Hate when characters don't ask all the questions they should, go somewhere else and then come back to ask the question that could have provided them with all the info they needed。 And while I appreciated the attempt to be diverse, it was very heavy handed。 。。。more

Human cloning- questions over immortality, human-body problem, etc。Reminded me of 'Altered carbon' - the setting in this book could be a earlier stage of what's possible in the altered carbon Human cloning- questions over immortality, human-body problem, etc。Reminded me of 'Altered carbon' - the setting in this book could be a earlier stage of what's possible in the altered carbon 。。。more

Captivating and creative。 There is one little “event” towards the end that he glosses over and doesn’t explain how Constance pulls through。 That was a but annoying for me。

Jeff

Well。 Really liked concept, and wanted to really like the book。 But couldn’t。 There some choices that didn’t make sense and the ending just didn’t end well。 So pretty good。

Marilyn Brown

Finally, a First Reads worth reading。

Faith

I thought this was billed as a thriller but it’s really more of a general scifi, at least the way I read it。 Overall a good read。

3。5。 Surprisingly really good sci-fi from First Reads。

Constance is an extremely well-told tale about the next advance in biotechnology—but not really。 Oh, the bioscience that suffuses the background canvas is remarkable and believable, but the story really is about a young woman intent on finding out who killed her。 Okay, that’s obtuse。 It’s about the clone of a young woman, who sees herself as herself in virtually every possible way, who is seeking desperately for the person or persons who killed her original。It reads a lot like a well-written mys Constance is an extremely well-told tale about the next advance in biotechnology—but not really。 Oh, the bioscience that suffuses the background canvas is remarkable and believable, but the story really is about a young woman intent on finding out who killed her。 Okay, that’s obtuse。 It’s about the clone of a young woman, who sees herself as herself in virtually every possible way, who is seeking desperately for the person or persons who killed her original。It reads a lot like a well-written mystery, but the biotechnical subject matter and Author FitzSimmons’s clear-sighted understanding of the implications of such an advance—legal, political, cultural, ethical—take the mystery to new heights。 The tale is filled with twists and turns; some I saw coming, some took me by surprise。I found no grammar errors (except in dialog, which is fine), no point-of-view problems, no misspellings。 FitzSimmons’s team did a great job! This book is well worth your time。 。。。more

Best everThat I have read in a long time。 Spent my Sunday reading the story from beginning to end。 A good book should leave a person a little dazed to the real world after emerging from the story。 This one did just that。

Lydia

Interesting idea。 Quick read。

UniqueWhat a story!! Full of twists and turns…it questions how far can science go? And, more importantly, how far should it go?Great read!!

Great from start to finish。I couldn't put it down。 Interesting from page one with characters well described so you "knew" them and the relationships with the other characters。 The story line is about 20 to 30 years in the future but still easy to accept and understand the changes over the years。 It is a wonderful story and progresses quickly。 Great from start to finish。I couldn't put it down。 Interesting from page one with characters well described so you "knew" them and the relationships with the other characters。 The story line is about 20 to 30 years in the future but still easy to accept and understand the changes over the years。 It is a wonderful story and progresses quickly。 。。。more

Interesting premise, but strangely executed and a bit far-fetched towards the end

Wow!Very well thought out and planned。 Thank you for a glimpse to the possible! I look forward to reading more of your work。

Rounded up from 3。5 because the story raises a lot of interesting ethical questions about cloning。 I enjoyed the first half more。 Found the last part to be a bit too implausible。 Interesting plot idea though。

Better than the original Of course, one would have to read the book to get the title。 Not。just a joke, this book actually captures the real philosophical issues that would。surround human cloning while remaining a compelling read。 This was a page turning ride that managed to wrap up the mystery while leaving it with many unanswered questions。 The clone is a real, and separate person from her original。。。。and she。becomes a much。better person than the original。

Stephen C

Enjoyable read with thought-provoking twistsInteresting, engrossing treatment of themes that others have explored, but with some novel takes thrown in。 Well paced with periodic surprises。

If you're into plot twists and turns and more twists, and a bit of cloning around。。。。you'll enjoy this one。 If you're into plot twists and turns and more twists, and a bit of cloning around。。。。you'll enjoy this one。 。。。more

WonderfulI enjoyed reading this book and I give it a 5🌟rating。 Clones how amazing if it were true。 My idea of cloning would help people who need new organs。

The Morality of Human CloningPerhaps a look into the future - the cloning of human beings。 It is not so much to clone the body, but to preserve the consciousness of an individual was the challenge addressed in this story。

Good Sci-FiThis story reminded me of the first season of Altered Carbon。 Very intriguing storyline & concept。 Looking forward to book two。
