Summary

The ninth and latest addition to the New York Times bestselling Spy School series that’s perfect for fans of Chris Grabenstein! Superspy middle schooler Ben Ripley faces his nemesis, Murray Hill, on the high seas。

Thanks to the evidence Ben uncovered in his investigation of the Croatoan, the CIA has tracked his nemesis, Murray Hill, to Central America, where they believe he is boarding the world’s biggest cruise ship, The Emperor of the Seas, on its maiden voyage around the world。

The CIA and MI6 want to find out what Murray is plotting, but to do that, they need to send in the person who knows Murray Hill the best: Ben Ripley。 Only Ben can’t be sent in alone。 So he’ll be posing as part of a family, with Alexander and Catherine Hale as his parents, Erica as his sister, and his best friend Mike as his brother。

At first, it sounds exciting to have a mission on the most glamorous ocean liner on earth, but as usual, nothing goes according to plan。 There is action, danger, and plenty of surprises as Ben and his team quickly find themselves in hot water。

Thanks to NetGalley, I had the opportunity to read and review this phenomenal new middle grade spy novel from Stuart Gibbs。 If you are a fan of the series, one of the best parts of this particular book is the reappearance of characters from previous books combined with unexpected new characters。 The cruise ship setting leads to humorous and thrilling action sequences throughout the book。 Almost every chapter ends with a cliff hanger and makes it hard to stop reading。 I read this aloud with my 10 Thanks to NetGalley, I had the opportunity to read and review this phenomenal new middle grade spy novel from Stuart Gibbs。 If you are a fan of the series, one of the best parts of this particular book is the reappearance of characters from previous books combined with unexpected new characters。 The cruise ship setting leads to humorous and thrilling action sequences throughout the book。 Almost every chapter ends with a cliff hanger and makes it hard to stop reading。 I read this aloud with my 10-year-old who begged for more every night。 It's also particularly cleverly written and humorous。 We stopped reading to laugh out loud numerous times。 The plot has interesting and engaging twists that leave you wondering what comes next。 If you have never read any of the spy school books, I would recommend starting at the beginning of the series, but if you choose to read this book alone, it is still just as entertaining。 Avast ye mateys - go read Spy School at Sea! 。。。more

With thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for an early copy in return for an honest review。Another fun addition to the Spy School series! It's always fun catching up with the characters and there are several action sequences in the book that will keep kids turning the page。 Some family + friendship + romance + nuclear detonators + cruise buffets makes for an enjoyable story。 With thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for an early copy in return for an honest review。Another fun addition to the Spy School series! Ben and I are pretending to be part of Erica's family, so we can snoop around a giant cruise ship in Guatemala looking for Murray Hill。 I know Murray was another student at the CIA's spy school for kids, but he's been amassing money while being a traitor to different criminal organizations。 We don't know what evil he's planning now, but Ben knows him better than anyone。 Ben thinks he might have seen Dane Brammage on the ship which would be terrible since Dane's tried killing Ben on several occasions。 However, Dane fell to his death on our last mission in Paris, didn't he? Erica will be just as dangerous as Dane if she finds out the secret Ben and I are keeping。 We need to stay focused on Murray though。 Can his plans have anything to do with the cruise ship itself?I received an ARC for this book, and I've enjoyed the whole series since it started。 Ben was the main character with ordinary spy skills, a talent for thinking, and a huge crush on Erica, a super-talented student-spy with a family legacy for spying。 The possibility of Ben and Erica becoming a couple was an ongoing subplot, and this book didn't provide any clarity until the final pages。 Ben and Mike kept a secret from her that created a book-long air of uncertainty that could have popped up into a big problem at any time。 The book was written to entertain, and the zany mission did not disappoint。 Murray was an inept, sloppy villain, there were chase scenes through buffet tables, and characters added snarky comments。 It was a spy adventure modified to appeal to younger readers。 The kids had typical boy/girl issues, the story never became stagnant, and as always, the conflict dealt with a major disaster, saving the world, or political/corporate corruption。 The plot had the same format as earlier books, so the book felt familiar。 However, this familiarity made the book feel less creative or new。 Overall, I'm enjoying the series, and a few things happened at the end of the book that give me hope that the sequel will be a little different。 。。。more

The ship is enormous and filled with awesome food and lots of teen activities, but finding Murray is of utmost importance。 After seeing an oddly named couple in a luxury suite that seems to point to Murray's handiwork, the kids break in。。。 only to find Jessica Shang and her mother, who own the ship。 Since Ben helped put her criminal father away, Jessica knows about Ben's connections, and helps him get passes and uniforms to facilitate the group's movement through the ship, although they are told NOT to go into the engine room。 Things don't go smoothly at all。 Alexander is horribly seasick, and Ben gets thrown overboard。 Luckily, Mike rescues him, and they end up having a lovely visit with a drug overlord who is very concerned about sea turtles and takes them back to the ship。 They do find Murray, but are suspicious as to exactly why he's on the ship。 It's not enough just to locate him, and Mike, Erica, and Ben have to work quickly to thwart is evil plans。 Strengths: I always think I can't possibly enjoy yet another book in Gibbs' series, and then they always, always end up being so enjoyable。 Just fun, and effortless to read。 They are so well constructed that I don't even think to mention exactly how the stories were successful。 I loved seeing some recurring characters, like the Shangs, and being surprised by the various nefarious activities that are uncovered that aren't even being investigated。 There are plenty of tips on how to survive and how to spy (I know that if I ever fall overboard, I need to go straight into the water and not belly flop!), and Ben's friendship with Mike and nascent romance with Erica continue to improve。 This is as close as I will get to a cruise-- I had promised myself that once my mother and my dog both passed away, I would go on one for spring break, and by that point, we were deep in the pandemic。 I'll probably never get to Hawaii, either-- maybe book ten can take us there! Weaknesses: As someone who read all 29 of the Braun Cat Who mysteries, I understand the appeal of a lengthy series。 As a middle school librarian, I wish that series would be shorter because book 9 never circulates as much as book 1, 2, or 3。 And, man, we needed more good mission names。 Those always make me snort aloud。 What I really think: These books do still circulate, so much so that when the publisher offered me a paper ARC, I took it because I have students who live near me and will be thrilled to be able to read it before it is published。 But ten is a nice round number, and then we can see fascinating new characters like Charlie Thorne。I feel like I need a giant "I've Read All the Spy School Books" button! 。。。more

Okay, I’ve got a couple complaints。 Every spy school book I read has to re-tell everything from the past books。 Making us suffer, and it’s not like a couple of things。 It’s pretty much everything。 Spy school revolution was a good book, but I felt it was forced/a cash grab。 Still it was a good book, but Ben Ripley for me is getting really annoying。 He relies on Erica to much, and that torch he carries for her is getting really big and annoying。 He also is very ignorant。 Although I’m still very ex Okay, I’ve got a couple complaints。 Every spy school book I read has to re-tell everything from the past books。 Making us suffer, and it’s not like a couple of things。 It’s pretty much everything。 Spy school revolution was a good book, but I felt it was forced/a cash grab。 Still it was a good book, but Ben Ripley for me is getting really annoying。 He relies on Erica to much, and that torch he carries for her is getting really big and annoying。 He also is very ignorant。 Although I’m still very excited for the upcoming book, and I love the series! 。。。more

Though I have never read this one (only on preview, duh)I am confident that it will be another great book like the others in Spy School series。After Trixie Hale's fancy debut in Spy School: Revolution (this title makes me think of Hamilton。。。)I was kinda wondering Bixie can be good as much as Berica。。。But, you know, Mixie is good, tooIDK why authors are trying to put new romance ships and love triangles。。。There is a spy school at sea on wattpad by someone called "Swishhhh" and it's pretty good。。 Though I have never read this one (only on preview, duh)I am confident that it will be another great book like the others in Spy School series。After Trixie Hale's fancy debut in Spy School: Revolution (this title makes me think of Hamilton。。。)I was kinda wondering Bixie can be good as much as Berica。。。But, you know, Mixie is good, tooIDK why authors are trying to put new romance ships and love triangles。。。There is a spy school at sea on wattpad by someone called "Swishhhh" and it's pretty good。。。PS if you ship zen, you are wrong。 Zoe is strange。。。 I knew zen was uncomfortable for ben all the time since the beginning! 。。。more

I received an ARC of this title from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions are my own and were not affected by the free copy。After saving the world, AGAIN, you would think Ben Ripley would finally get a vacation。 But the rapscallion Murray Hill is at it again, this time on the Emperor of the Sea-the world's largest cruise ship。 As per the usual, this book is well written to be enjoyed by all ages! I will continue to recommend Spy School out to kids and adventure loving readers。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this new installment in the Spy School series。 There’s plenty of action, romance, and even a new emotional undertone that sets this book apart from the others in the series。 What I love about this series is how broad it’s audience is。 Young children, teenagers, even adults can enjoy reading these books, which I think is very special。 I would recommend Spy School at Sea to anyone but especially kids/teens and fans of the series。 eARC provided by Simon & Schuster via Edelweiss
