I loved the story!

One of my favourite childhood stories; I had seen the movie probably 146 times in the 80s, but I had never read the book! My children (5 and 8) and I just finished the audiobook; we all loved it! The story bones are similar to the film, but some details and the end are different。 I do prefer my nostalgic movie and I'm excited to discuss the differences with my 8 year old。 One of my favourite childhood stories; I had seen the movie probably 146 times in the 80s, but I had never read the book! Part of kids’ literature curriculum this year。 I didn’t really like this book much as a kid and while it does have a lot of good qualities, I struggled to enjoy it as an adult too! I know it is a classic, but I guess the story feels almost too small, somehow, and kind of drags along with you waiting for *something* to happen。 So, we listened to it on audiobook but it wasn’t our favorite and it took us a long time to finish the audio, even though it was only six hours and we even sped it up to 1。 Part of kids’ literature curriculum this year。 I didn’t really like this book much as a kid and while it does have a lot of good qualities, I struggled to enjoy it as an adult too! Listened to the audiobook during a family road trip。 While I vaguely recalled enjoying it when I was a child, I was stuck by what a good novel this is。 We were all riveted by the end, even those (adult and child) who were highly skeptical of the concept initially。 Also, how often is a mother cast as a hero? Very rarely。 For parents of sensitive children: The ending does have an upsetting component (view spoiler)[ with the death of a beloved character (hide spoiler)]。 While it’s poignant, it’s ha Listened to the audiobook during a family road trip。 While I vaguely recalled enjoying it when I was a child, I was stuck by what a good novel this is。 We were all riveted by the end, even those (adult and child) who were highly skeptical of the concept initially。 Also, how often is a mother cast as a hero? Beautiful book。 Cool story and great characters。Touches a bit on the evils that humans inflict on animals so has a good message buried in the tale。

This was a cute book。 I hadn't read it before and so I wanted to see if it would be something my daughter would like to read it and I really think she would love it。 This was a cute book。 I hadn't read it before and so I wanted to see if it would be something my daughter would like to read it and I really think she would love it。 。。。more

I fell in love with the movie, The Secret of NIMH, when I was a child。 Now, as an adult, I got to fall in love with the book。 I am unashamed to admit I had a HUGE crush on Justin when I was a kid。 Even less ashamed to admit I am crushing even harder almost 40 years later。 What a beautifully written character。 Of course, this makes the book's ending a little hard to swallow。 It's rare I see a movie before I read the book。 In this case, our school librarian started reading this book to a lower-lev I fell in love with the movie, The Secret of NIMH, when I was a child。 Now, as an adult, I got to fall in love with the book。 I am unashamed to admit I had a HUGE crush on Justin when I was a kid。 Even less ashamed to admit I am crushing even harder almost 40 years later。 What a beautifully written character。 Of course, this makes the book's ending a little hard to swallow。 It's rare I see a movie before I read the book。 In this case, our school librarian started reading this book to a lower-level class just as the movie came out in 1982。 So when I went to check it out to read it, because I knew I would be seeing the movie, it was unavailable。 By the time I could check it out, I had already seen the movie and I figured, what's the point? The movie is a fairly faithful rendition of the book。 There are, of course, some differences, but for the most part I think they improve the story, especially for the big screen。 I don't want to drop any spoilers here。 That would be unfair。 I will say this, though。 I like the movie's ending better。 。。。more

I read this to my daughter recently and thoroughly enjoyed it。 It highlighted how brave we can be when faced with an impossible decision and are willing to put our lives on the line to protect loved ones。 It also displays the importance of community, and how we can beat the odds when we work together。Though the movie is wonderful, the book is better, and different enough to warrant reading。

I liked it a lot。 I saw the animated movie when I was 12, in 2007, and when I saw this book at the local bookstore I just had to read it and compare it to the movie。 Although it was a long time ago, I do remember a lot and as I was reading I remembered all that was different from the movie。I hope there is more because the end made me want to know more!

Loved it! I’m on a roll with excellent middle grade level books lately。 They’re so fun to read! I love Mrs。 Frisby and I think this will be a story I come back to over the years。

For a short book, it is a very long read, and often a bit painful to read at some parts。 But overall it is a good read and I did enjoy it because I loved the movie growing up。

A sweet little book。 I remember many nights falling asleep to this boom (on cassette type) as a kid。 Exactly as a remembered it!! Mrs。 Frisby kept me company on a full day of traveling。Three stars is probably the nostalgia value。

Touching and smarter than I had any right to expect。 NIMH has at its center a single mother who's will, love and bravery is the force of change that drives this story and left me wondering why more children's fiction, or literature in general, doesn't feature single moms in heroic roles because it feels so organic here。 O'Brien also takes a nuanced view on Animal testing and ecology that add layers upon layers to this classic that even at fifty years old doesn't feel dated in the least。 Touching and smarter than I had any right to expect。 NIMH has at its center a single mother who's will, love and bravery is the force of change that drives this story and left me wondering why more children's fiction, or literature in general, doesn't feature single moms in heroic roles because it feels so organic here。 O'Brien also takes a nuanced view on Animal testing and ecology that add layers upon layers to this classic that even at fifty years old doesn't feel dated in the least。 。。。more

I've been teaching summer school this month, and a rising 5th grader was added to my roster after 2 weeks。 I've been trying to help set students up to complete their summer assignments。 He did not have a definite assignment, but there was a list of suggested books for him and his classmates。 I curated what I could find, and had him pick。 He chose Fudge-a-Mania, which is an excellent book; I decided I wanted to check this one out, even though it had never appealed to me before。I am very happy I b I've been teaching summer school this month, and a rising 5th grader was added to my roster after 2 weeks。 I've been trying to help set students up to complete their summer assignments。 He did not have a definite assignment, but there was a list of suggested books for him and his classmates。 I curated what I could find, and had him pick。 He chose Fudge-a-Mania, which is an excellent book; I decided I wanted to check this one out, even though it had never appealed to me before。I am very happy I brought this to the beach with me yesterday, and finished it up today! I was skeptical at first, as the premise and era it is set in didn't seem like things I would enjoy。 However, I came to love Mrs。 Frisby and the Rats, as well as the other characters they meet along the way。 If he has time to read a second book before summer school is over, I shall be heavily recommending this one to him! 。。。more

At first I thought it was pretty boring, but then it got really intriguing。 The ending seems a little abrupt, but overall I enjoyed it, interesting food for thought。

You know those books that make you want to write an essay? This is one of those books。 Also, fantastic audiobook!

Not exactly sure why this is a Newbery book。 Cute and fun, but not inspiring to me。

One of my all time favorite read alouds for my three sons。

I unexpectedly loved this book about mice and rats。 My 7 and 9 year old boys did too, we listened on audio in addition to my read aloud。

A delightful children’s book where the central character is the mother mouse, Mrs。 Frisby。 We readers are drawn into the perils of small creatures in a creative story that introduces us to a host of animal and human characters。 Definitely a fun book to read, even as an adult。

I used to love the movie The Secret of Nimh very much when I was little so I got excited to read the book it was based on! It’s very different but still has that classic element of whimsy。 I really enjoyed it and am very happy to own a copy now。

I read this book to my six-year-old son。 It would be better for a slightly older age—he had a bit of a hard time following the two timelines—the main story and then the flashbacks to what happened at NIMH。 But overall he enjoyed it。 I did too—I read this book several times when I was younger and it’s still a good one。The story is about a widowed mouse who needs to move her family away from a farmer’s field before he plows it and overturns their home。 But her son is ill, and unlikely to survive i I read this book to my six-year-old son。 It would be better for a slightly older age—he had a bit of a hard time following the two timelines—the main story and then the flashbacks to what happened at NIMH。 But overall he enjoyed it。 I did too—I read this book several times when I was younger and it’s still a good one。The story is about a widowed mouse who needs to move her family away from a farmer’s field before he plows it and overturns their home。 But her son is ill, and unlikely to survive if they move to the damp river too soon, when the nights are still cold。 But then a wise old owl tells Mrs。 Frisby she ought to ask the rats for help。 The rats always keep to themselves, but it turns out they are willing to help—because they knew her late husband。 The rats (and the late Mr。 Frisby) were all part of a lab experiment that resulted in higher than normal intelligence, and the story of their capture, time in the lab, and escape forms a large chunk of the book。 But danger lurks around the corner for all of the animals 。 。 。 keeping the stakes high but not-too-scary for the young end of middle grade。 。。。more

Absolutely adored by my 6 year old。 I finished reading it to her and she re-started it with Daddy the same day。 There was some interesting social commentary too, about the nature of "progress" and intellectual development。 Absolutely adored by my 6 year old。 I finished reading it to her and she re-started it with Daddy the same day。 There was some interesting social commentary too, about the nature of "progress" and intellectual development。 。。。more
