Summary

A story for a new generation of Maximum Ride fans! Max's 17 year old daughter Hawk is growing up hard and fast in gritty, post-apocalyptic New York City。 She stays under the radar to survive。。。until a destiny that's perilously close to her mother's forces her to take flight。
Hawk doesn't know her real name。 She doesn't know who her family was, or where they went。 The only thing she remembers is that she was told to stay on that street corner until they came back for her, for as long as it takes。
That was thirteen years ago。
The day that she finally gives up is the moment that her life changes forever。 Because the promise becomes reality: someone is coming for her。 But it's not a rescue。 It's an execution。

It was amazing seeing my favourite characters back in action after the end of "Maximum Ride Forever"。 I loved Hawk and related to her so much。 As usual both the character development and character attitudes are top-notch。 The ending almost got me in tears, seeing both central characters' relationship blossom。 Cannot wait for the next one! Now me reading Maximum Ride almost 5 years maybe more before this, I was mind blown。 I think what really threw me off was the way the last book of Maximum Ride, it seemed as though the world was a wasteland that can't be fixed in 10-15 years, yet the world was very much liveable for a lot of people。 But otherwise, we get to see the Gang all grown up and Hawk/Phoenix for those who are like me and it took a minute to realize。 Definitely read if you have read Maximum Ride。 Now me reading Maximum Ride almost 5 years maybe more before this, I was mind blown。 I think what really threw me off was the way the last book of Maximum Ride, it seemed as though the world was a wasteland that can't be fixed in 10-15 years, yet the world was very much liveable for a lot of people。 But otherwise, we get to see the Gang all grown up and Hawk/Phoenix for those who are like me and it took a minute to realize。 Definitely read if you have read Maximum Ride。 。。。more

My favorite part of this was the characters。 They’ll always hold a special place in my heart as the original series was my all-time favorite as a kid ❤️ Beyond that the plot, world-building, etc didn’t really do it for me。 This would be a 3 or 2 star rating if I didn’t love the characters so much。 But it still wasn’t the same as the original series。

Absolutely。 Where have you been? Living under a rock?) Meeting up with my favorite characters from the past was heartwarming, but I will say, I missed Max's voice the most。 Getting a portion of the book in her voice again was awesome。 However, is it maybe just time to say goodbye for real? I mean, great book, and I'd love to continue on with the Flock, and I'm loving the next-generation vibes from this one。 However, this is the 10th book in the series, and maybe it's time to let Max go, and instead focus on the world as a whole。 That all being said, what's up with the world? We left off the last book after a nuclear blast that basically fried the entire planet, and I was not really convinced by the lack of, well, apocalyptic-ness? This felt more like 2012 dystopia than a 2020 Maximum Ride continuation。 Still, I was drawn in from the beginning, and got hit by every single stinking twist, just like I always do with James Patterson。 Do I recommend it? Yes。 But only to people who want their hearts shattered。 (Iykyk)。 。。。more

It was a really good book, and displayed different point of views, the orphans and the rich fancy boy。 It also showed that just because you are different doesn’t mean that you are a monster or worthless。 This book also shows strong female roles!

I read this series expecting this to be the last book and finale of the series which might have tapered my review downhill a bit but if there are more books in the series to come then I suppose this book would be taken in 100 times better。 This would definitely not make a great finale book but a great start to something new。 Props to James Patterson for making this new book to this series! Maximum Ride has been and will be my favorite series for a while and this new book was a gift。 A bit disappointed but I hope for another book in this series! 。。。more

I originally read the Maximum Ride books -- both iterations of them -- about 10 years ago。 So I was excited when I heard that a new story was coming out, and that it would be part of a series, too! I worked through this one mostly via audiobook, but had the hardcover from the local library handy, too, to read in between。 This is the story of Hawk, Max and Fang's daughter, and her story of survival。 The pacing, narration and plot line definitely hearken back to the preceding books。 It's not an I originally read the Maximum Ride books -- both iterations of them -- about 10 years ago。 So I was excited when I heard that a new story was coming out, and that it would be part of a series, too! This was an interesting continuation of the maximum ride series。 It follows Hawk the daughter of max and fang who is getting by in the city of the dead, the dystopian world。 We also still follow max who has found herself in prison after a mission goes wrong。 With the help of the flock Hawk and the others free max but find that is only half the battle because their kind is on the edge of extinction。

I've read some good James Patterson books and even some great James Patterson co-written by others but unfortunately this wasn't one of them。 I've not read any of the Maximum Rider series but thought I'd like to give it a try。 The description of the book said it was for a new generation of fans, so I thought its a good place to start。 I also thought it would be a kids book, but the first sentence starts with bad language。 I don't mind this in a book or anywhere, where its necessary, but I though I've read some good James Patterson books and even some great James Patterson co-written by others but unfortunately this wasn't one of them。 I've not read any of the Maximum Rider series but thought I'd like to give it a try。 The description of the book said it was for a new generation of fans, so I thought its a good place to start。 I also thought it would be a kids book, but the first sentence starts with bad language。 I don't mind this in a book or anywhere, where its necessary, but I thought this was for kids so not a great start for me。 The book didn't get any better from there and I didn't enjoy it at all。 It seemed very muddled and didn't introduce the characters well。 It was very confusing as to where they were and what was going on。 Thank you to Random House UK, Cornerstone for the opportunity to read and review this book。 。。。more

Why was the original cast slowly boiled down to just one trait of their former selves? Why did I still see Gazzy as an eleven-year-old kid even though he was supposed to be, like, thirty? Oh, because they had reduced character development。The narration switched between Hawk and her mother。 They had been separated when Hawk was a young girl, but somehow their voice read the exact same。 Max had to be in her lower thirties but still narrated like she was the fourteen-year-old punk navigating NYC。 The two narrators had the same thought patterns, which to me is nothing more than lazy writing and not a subconscious maternal influence。 The author was obviously trying to hard to channel the fourteen-year-old Max we loved when we were younger, but it feel into a poor, shoddy parody of itself。 I don't usually say this unironically, but it was cringey at best, embarrassing at worst。 The entire plot was made up of three main beats。 The first one, to save Hawk's friends from the largely unexplained, vague threat of scientific experimentation, I had less than zero interest in。 I think we got maybe two scenes with Hawk's gang before this happened, so I had no sense of urgency in rescuing them。 The second beat was something I cared more for, but it felt too familiar from Max's past experiences。 Oh no, locked in a horrible jail。。。 But what's new? But then the third plotline。 This one's a mess, and what brought my rating down from two stars to one。 The world building! A mess。 I understand this book diverged from our reality long ago, but this world was so drastically different from the one we were given back in The Angel Experiment that it gave me this fanfiction alternate universe vibe。 So basically, the world ended and now the government put everyone on drugs? Awesome! This paved the way for a horrible, genuinely disrespectful representation of drug addicts。 Though the drugs were only called "dope" and "rainbow" I took them to represent heroin and acid respectively due to how the characters reacted to them。 It whittled a very real drug epidemic in our world down to a mere annoyance, that all the users were the same and that they deserved to be in their situation (well, except for the kids! oBvIoUsLy they were forced to start taking drugs, so it's not their fault!)。 Every time we got our child narrator belittling the drug addicts that took up most of her city, it genuinely disgusted me。 It makes me wonder what the author really knows about drug addiction。 I'm clearly not an expert myself, but if I were writing about a drug epidemic I would certainly have done enough research to know how to humanize drug addicts! On the other side of representation: Clete was clearly autistic, but why did the author do backbends to avoid flat-out saying it? How many times was Clete going to "flap his arms" or have Hawk explain that he didn't like being touched and was good with technology or whatever? Which, again, these are just stereotypes of autism that make me think the author just googled some common traits and slapped them together to build him。 Personality traits first, personality second。 This is to say, Clete had absolutely no personality。 But really: did the term autistic disappear in the apocalypse? The longer Clete was in the story, the more painful it got。 Honestly, killing him off was a mercy because it meant that the last fifteen percent of the book wasn't going to contain any additional horrendous misrepresentation。Before I get to by biggest beef with this abomination I just want to make it very clear that I finished this and still know nothing about Hawk's gang。 We only got the ONE description of them repeated nearly word-for-word every time Hawk wanted to tell their story。 Okay, I get it。 I get that Rain looked like she'd been acid rained on or something。 I don't care。 I don't know anything else about her。 I didn't even remember they were characters, half the time, because as soon as Hawk "rescued" them they were rehabbed and healed behind the scenes。Okay, last thing, I think: The biggest sin of this book was the antagonist。 Evil for the sake of being evil is never, ever a good motivation。 I get that this is young adult fiction。 I get that Max and co。 have been facing evil for the sake of evil for their whole lives。 As a kid, I thought it was so badass to see them winning against the bad guys。 But god, doesn't it get old? Like, replace McCallum with, like, the Uber Director from book three and。。。 isn't it the same villain costume? If you're going to drag a series on for this long, can we at least have a threat we can relate to a little bit? I really wanted to dnf this book from the very beginning。 The first four books of this series meant so much to me as a kid。 If I had to pick a select few definitive artifacts from my childhood that influenced my decision to become a writer, reading these books over and over again until the cover fell off my copy of School's Out Forever is very, very high on the list。 Reading this series as a nearly twenty-five-year old who now has a degree in writing, to call this an embarrassment would be an understatement。 Please let the flock rest in peace。 As far as I'm concerned, this book did not happen。 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 1/5 thank you 。。。more
