I first used this book in a 200-level course entitled "Writing for Teachers，" a course designed to teach English majors how to teach writing to their future students。From day one， I was very happy with this book。 I have read a lot of complaints about it that say it is too elementary， or that it doesn't offer anything useful to experienced writers; people who make these complaints， however， do not understand the point of this book。Obviously， people have varying skill levels when it comes to writi I first used this book in a 200-level course entitled "Writing for Teachers，" a course designed to teach English majors how to teach writing to their future students。From day one， I was very happy with this book。 I have read a lot of complaints about it that say it is too elementary， or that it doesn't offer anything useful to experienced writers; people who make these complaints， however， do not understand the point of this book。Obviously， people have varying skill levels when it comes to writing--some can just naturally articulate their points and construct publishable essays on their first attempt， while others struggle to get any of their ideas into words。 For those of the former， you may not get much out of this book。 For the latter， however， this book is invaluable。This book does not set out to offer some profound wisdom about persuasive writing that will make all of us experts in a day。 Rather， it takes acaademic writing and it breaks it down to its most basic form--templates--so that it is accessible to everyone。 Through those templates， writers of all skill levels are able to see what "moves" they have to make in their writing， not only to make their writing better but to make those moves more natural， and easier， in the future。As I read it， I found myself nodding along， and saying "oh yeah， I guess that is true！" because as someone who has found writing to be naturally easy， I have never had to stop and consider the steps that writing takes。 This book， however， outlines those steps， makes them very clear and easy to follow， so that people who need the extra time and explanation are able to get it。This isn't to say， though， that this book is useless to those who are advanced or "natural" writers。 Something else I found beautiful about it is that everyone who reads this book will learn SOMETHING or find SOMETHING useful about writing。 For me， it was some of the more advanced templates that help me do things like "agree but disagree，" or "present a counterargument，" without using the same words over and over。 After you've said "I agree but。。。" multiple times in a piece of writing， it helps just to be able to go find one of these templates with other options。 And， speaking of other options， the list of verbs to use in place of "says" is INVALUABLE， and I will forever have a copy next to my computer when I sit down to write。So， whether you're a teacher or a student， no matter what field， I recommend you get a copy of this book。 What Graff and Birkenstein have done is articulated what teachers for decades have been struggling to convey to their students; they have organized a simple tool that will help get all writers--students and teachers--on the same page; and they have written a book that will help writers of all skill-levels and backgrounds finally understand academic writing。 。。。more
