Summary

An urgent manifesto and a dramatic memoir of awakening, this is the story of revolutionary love。

"In a world stricken with fear and turmoil, Valarie Kaur shows us how to summon our deepest wisdom。"--Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Pray Love

How do we love in a time of rage? How do we fix a broken world while not breaking ourselves? Valarie Kaur--renowned Sikh activist, filmmaker, and civil rights lawyer--describes revolutionary love as the call of our time, a radical, joyful practice that extends in three directions: to others, to our opponents, and to ourselves。 It enjoins us to see no stranger but instead look at others and say: You are part of me I do not yet know。 Starting from that place of wonder, the world begins to change: It is a practice that can transform a relationship, a community, a culture, even a nation。

Kaur takes readers through her own riveting journey--as a brown girl growing up in California farmland finding her place in the world; as a young adult galvanized by the murders of Sikhs after 9/11; as a law student fighting injustices in American prisons and on Guantnamo Bay; as an activist working with communities recovering from xenophobic attacks; and as a woman trying to heal from her own experiences with police violence and sexual assault。 Drawing from the wisdom of sages, scientists, and activists, Kaur reclaims love as an active, public, and revolutionary force that creates new possibilities for ourselves, our communities, and our world。 See No Stranger helps us imagine new ways of being with each other--and with ourselves--so that together we can begin to build the world we want to see。

Covered so many relevant topics- racism, gender, trauma, healing。 Such a strong, clear optimistic voice for creating a new future based on revolutionary love。 Great book!

I would only recommend this reading this difficult book with someone else or in a book club, in order to discuss the many ideas and experiences presented by Valarie Kaur。 I found it valuable in exposing harassment, assaults, and murders of Muslims, or anyone suspected of being Muslim, such as brown people and Sikhs, particularly post 9/11。 As we think about commemorating the 20th anniversary of 9/11, this aspect is worth remembering as well。 I learned much more about the Sikh people (very valuab I would only recommend this reading this difficult book with someone else or in a book club, in order to discuss the many ideas and experiences presented by Valarie Kaur。 I found it valuable in exposing harassment, assaults, and murders of Muslims, or anyone suspected of being Muslim, such as brown people and Sikhs, particularly post 9/11。 As we think about commemorating the 20th anniversary of 9/11, this aspect is worth remembering as well。 I learned much more about the Sikh people (very valuable), and possibly more than I needed to know about Valarie Kaur。 There is so much packed into this book: history, memoir, spiritual concepts, and an approach to interacting with and thinking about other groups, especially those we consider our opponents。 The first and last of these was most valuable to me。 I commend Valarie Kaur for her passion for justice for all。 。。。more

You have to read this memoir! So impactful! I’d especially recommend audible, as Valarie reads the books and her singing and pronunciation would be lost in the book - though I had to keep cross referencing to get the quotes down。 Best book I’ve read all year!

Loved it! Should be required reading in every high school。

There are not enough words to convey the greatness of this book。 It is transformative and inspiring, a gift to our world。

Filled with stories and wisdom that will light a fire in your heart to love deeper and with more courage。 Timely for myself, as I wonder about my own role in advocacy, but timeless for all who dream of a world where we see no stranger。

I don’t have words to describe how powerful and poignant this book is。 It is remarkable and a must-read。 Every now and then a book comes along that you know will leave you forever changed。 This is one of them。 I won’t do the book justice here, so I’ll just say listen to it/read it, but somehow absorb it。

Current and contextual, this readable memoir and inspirational text is designed to help us sustain the labor of loving the world and ourselves, knowing that (as Cornel West says) justice is what love looks like in public。

One of the most beautiful and impactful books I’ve ever read

If you’re an activist fuelled with rage at the state of the world or a social justice leader – this book is for you。 This book took me through all the emotions – I cried, I laughed and I felt understood。 It was like talking to an older mentor – a very wise one who has dedicated their life to social justice。 I bought this book after taking part in a course by Komal Minhas where Valarie was a guest speaker, she facilitated the circle with warmth, love and compassion helping all the participants be If you’re an activist fuelled with rage at the state of the world or a social justice leader – this book is for you。 This book took me through all the emotions – I cried, I laughed and I felt understood。 It was like talking to an older mentor – a very wise one who has dedicated their life to social justice。 I bought this book after taking part in a course by Komal Minhas where Valarie was a guest speaker, she facilitated the circle with warmth, love and compassion helping all the participants be vulnerable and connect more deeply。 It was our first book as part of our South Asian Women’s Book Club here in Melbourne, and every one of our members thoroughly enjoyed the read。UPDATE 18/07/2021: I invited Valarie to give a speech at Deakin University’s Startup Demo Day (via SPARK Deakin) on how Revolutionary Love could be applicable to entrepreneurs especially during COVID。 From 4。15 she reads a part of her book。 You can see that on the link below。 If you want to buy the book, you automatically make a $1-$2 donation to the Australian South Asian Centre if you buy from the below affiliate link。 I established the Centre in 2020 to amplify the voices of South Asian women who are creatives, founders and leaders。https://bit。ly/36XVRpr 。。。more

Loved it。 Went out and bought a copy before returned this to the library so I can read it again。

Moving and memorable, but somehow less so than it aspired to be。 I learned most from the author's example of listening to hard stories, but was then sometimes wrenched out of that focus by TMI in the memoir arena。 I'll probably be watching some of her films, though。 Moving and memorable, but somehow less so than it aspired to be。 I learned most from the author's example of listening to hard stories, but was then sometimes wrenched out of that focus by TMI in the memoir arena。 I'll probably be watching some of her films, though。 。。。more

Overall, this is a good, important book。 I found the memoir aspect of the book the most interesting, and I learned a lot about Sikhism and the struggles Sikhs have faced since 9/11。 The message is also good, but it gets repetitive。

If everyone read this book, what a different place the world would be。Seriously, everyone should read this book。 Thank you to Valarie for the courage to tell her story。

Activist Valeria Kaur has spent her career--her life--documenting hate crimes and working to change our landscape that permits them to happen。 As a Sikh, she has particularly focused on her religious community, while at the same time spreading her net wide to include everyone。 This book tells her journey and uses it to illustrate the beliefs that have prompted her actions。 She describes her system of revolutionary love, and invites the rest of us to join her。 This book speaks to my deepest value Activist Valeria Kaur has spent her career--her life--documenting hate crimes and working to change our landscape that permits them to happen。 As a Sikh, she has particularly focused on her religious community, while at the same time spreading her net wide to include everyone。 This book tells her journey and uses it to illustrate the beliefs that have prompted her actions。 She describes her system of revolutionary love, and invites the rest of us to join her。 This book speaks to my deepest values, and I must give it the highest rating possible to match what it means to me。When you love someone, you fight to protect them when they are in harm's way。 If you "see no stranger" and choose to love all people, then you must fight for anyone who is suffering from the harm of injustice。 This was the path of the warrior-sage: The warrior fights, the sage loves。 Revolutionary love。 。。。more

This book is written from the point of view of the Sikh religion, which for many Americans is completely unknown。 Kaur writes from the personal experience of being discriminated against and even harmed because of her background and the color of her skin。 Yet, she learns how to love even though she's been hurt。 This book is at times very difficult to read because of the stories she tells。 But it is also full of hope for this world if it is willing to learn how to practice Revolutionary Love。 This book is written from the point of view of the Sikh religion, which for many Americans is completely unknown。 Kaur writes from the personal experience of being discriminated against and even harmed because of her background and the color of her skin。 Yet, she learns how to love even though she's been hurt。 This book is at times very difficult to read because of the stories she tells。 But it is also full of hope for this world if it is willing to learn how to practice Revolutionary Love。 。。。more

Effectively two books as it says in the title: the first part is a really interesting and thought provoking autobiography which made me see the effects of 9。11 from a different perspective I had never considered。 The second half has some clear concepts on 'revolutionary love' which I didn't see as anything 'revolutionary' as such, but rewording of practical ways to remain mindful and live a life of understanding and reconciliation, rather than indifference and punishment。 Effectively two books as it says in the title: the first part is a really interesting and thought provoking autobiography which made me see the effects of 9。11 from a different perspective I had never considered。 The second half has some clear concepts on 'revolutionary love' which I didn't see as anything 'revolutionary' as such, but rewording of practical ways to remain mindful and live a life of understanding and reconciliation, rather than indifference and punishment。 。。。more

If I only talk you into reading one book this year, please let this be the one。 I was a little intimidated by the size of this book, but it turned out to be no big deal。 Valarie is such a skilled story teller, the pages flew by。 It was a surprisingly fast read (mostly because I couldn't put it down!)。This book will make your heart bigger。 It will make you want to love better。Valarie tells her story in a way that is inspiring, challenging, and riveting。 I learned so much about the Sikh faith that If I only talk you into reading one book this year, please let this be the one。 I was a little intimidated by the size of this book, but it turned out to be no big deal。 Valarie is such a skilled story teller, the pages flew by。 It was a surprisingly fast read (mostly because I couldn't put it down!)。This book will make your heart bigger。 It will make you want to love better。Valarie tells her story in a way that is inspiring, challenging, and riveting。 I learned so much about the Sikh faith that I never knew。 I learned so much about post-911: hate crimes。 I had only heard a tiny fraction of those stories in the news。 But this book is so much more than stories。 It's about living a life of love, of revolutionary love。 Whatever faith you hold, this book will help you tap into the deep wells of love for others, for your opponent, and for yourself。You can learn more about Valarie, about See No Stranger, and about the Revolutionary Love Project at https://valariekaur。com/ 。。。more

This was an incredibly powerful book - a book for our times。 Kaur uses stories from her life to teach us how to move forward bravely and compassionately, how to build a future that holds space for all of us。

Incredible because of Valerie’s vulnerability and honesty as she calls us to revolutionary love。

The life events, literal labor of love, and viewpoints shared here by Valarie Kaur are among the most remarkable and truly guiding/edifying/leading that I have ever heard。 I was deeply moved by this book from beginning to the very end, and am excited and nervous to follow up by continuing the work she lays out。I've read a LOT of powerful and important nonfiction in the past year, but this one has moved to the top of the list of books that I am begging my mother, my partner, my sisters, my boss, The life events, literal labor of love, and viewpoints shared here by Valarie Kaur are among the most remarkable and truly guiding/edifying/leading that I have ever heard。 I was deeply moved by this book from beginning to the very end, and am excited and nervous to follow up by continuing the work she lays out。I've read a LOT of powerful and important nonfiction in the past year, but this one has moved to the top of the list of books that I am begging my mother, my partner, my sisters, my boss, and others who care about moving through the world with love while struggling for justice concerning countless harms perpetrated by us humans against one another and against the earth itself。 。。。more
