👍A very hard book to put down。 Very engaging, always leaves you wondering what is around the next corner。 Amazing look into what could be happening in a world we don't know exist at this time。 Keep up great work 👍A very hard book to put down。 Very engaging, always leaves you wondering what is around the next corner。 Amazing look into what could be happening in a world we don't know exist at this time。 Keep up great work 。。。more

Fun YA steam punk story。

This trilogy was much better than I anticipated。 Once I started it I didn't want to put it down。 The two main characters are fifteen years old, but there was no teenage angst to be found。 All three of the books are character driven and the characters are engaging。 The world building was excellent and the descriptions were well done。 I was fascinated by it all。 If you like steampunk fantasy with a good vs evil theme then you will like these books。 This trilogy was much better than I anticipated。 Once I started it I didn't want to put it down。 The two main characters are fifteen years old, but there was no teenage angst to be found。 All three of the books are character driven and the characters are engaging。 The world building was excellent and the descriptions were well done。 I was fascinated by it all。 If you like steampunk fantasy with a good vs evil theme then you will like these books。 。。。more

Decent young adult fiction。 Emphasis on the young。 3 stars for creativity。I wanted to love this。 Steampunk weapons, knights riding giant spiders, even bigger bugs attacking the hero's town。 But it feels simple, written for a 6th grade audience, with limited world building, character development, and basic dialogue where the characters just describe what they're going to do。 This effect was doubled in the audiobook, where the narrator could only manage one male voice, so the teenage protagonist, Decent young adult fiction。 Emphasis on the young。 3 stars for creativity。I wanted to love this。 Steampunk weapons, knights riding giant spiders, even bigger bugs attacking the hero's town。 But it feels simple, written for a 6th grade audience, with limited world building, character development, and basic dialogue where the characters just describe what they're going to do。 This effect was doubled in the audiobook, where the narrator could only manage one male voice, so the teenage protagonist, his 20-something friend, father, and 60-ish friend all sound like the same person。 I had to wait for the "said Jacob" to know who was talking。 Adult me was half bored, due to having come straight from master of dialogue Scalzi, so probably not a fair judgement。 Still, I think I would have enjoyed this more at 12, and an anime version of this book would have been the coolest thing ever。 。。。more

Easy to read, likable characters and enthralling world。 I only wish there were more books to follow

Steam-powered biomechs, giant insects used as transportation, airships (of course), high explosives, and an epic journey in the air, on the ground, and well below it。 I would certainly like this to go beyond a trilogy, and to explore the places talked about but not yet visited。

Halfway through the first book I gave up。 I can’t quite put my finger on it but I just couldn’t get into this book。

Audiobook review: This series is not my normal for go to reading/listening but I'm glad I stepped outside my comfort zone! The author takes the audience on quite an adventure。 The timeline seemed a little disjointed in spots, but just roll with it。 The narrator did a great job! I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review。 Audiobook review: This series is not my normal for go to reading/listening but I'm glad I stepped outside my comfort zone! Listening to this series on Audible。 I'm halfway through the 2nd book, and have been thoroughly immersed this far in a richly detailed, fantastical world that is as beautiful as it is horrific。 The worst threats are not the amazing monsters, but the villianous intents of men。 The characters are anything but flat, and the relationships between them are believable, not shallow or cliche。 I look forward to seeing how this journey ends。 Nothing thus far has been predictable, but the story has flowed Listening to this series on Audible。 I'm halfway through the 2nd book, and have been thoroughly immersed this far in a richly detailed, fantastical world that is as beautiful as it is horrific。 The worst threats are not the amazing monsters, but the villianous intents of men。 The characters are anything but flat, and the relationships between them are believable, not shallow or cliche。 I look forward to seeing how this journey ends。 Nothing thus far has been predictable, but the story has flowed organically without any awkwardness or random acts of god for the sake of story movement。 I just discovered this author, and I will most definitely be reading the rest of his library。 。。。more

STEAMBORNThe Fall Of The WallsThis series must be read in order。 This is the first book。 I can't wait to read "Steamforged"!Jacob's whole world revolves around being Charles' Apprentice, his father's illness, and his best friend Alice。 His father's medicines is so expensive he has to resort to being a pickpocket。 Hopefully his father will be completely well soon so he can leave that part of his life behind。 Too much of his time is taken up with Cotillion practices for the Festival。。。 But it only STEAMBORNThe Fall Of The WallsThis series must be read in order。 This is the first book。 I can't wait to read "Steamforged"!Jacob's whole world revolves around being Charles' Apprentice, his father's illness, and his best friend Alice。 His father's medicines is so expensive he has to resort to being a pickpocket。 Hopefully his father will be completely well soon so he can leave that part of his life behind。 Too much of his time is taken up with Cotillion practices for the Festival。。。 But it only happened once right? And it makes Alice happy so he has to do it。 Everything seems fine and normal until Festival when the walls are breached by killer bugs。 Everyone is being evacuated to the Highlands behind the huge city wall。 The Lowlands are a disaster of death and destruction, not to mention tons of killer bugs。 What happened? How did the walls just fail? Was this a concerted attack? Or some sort of natural disaster? Who would attack the Lowlands if that is what happened? How long can the Highlands support both themselves and the Lowlanders? Why do so many Highlanders hate the Lowlanders? STEAMFORGEDInto The Deadlands This series must be read in order。 The first book is "Steamborn"。 This is the second book。 I can't wait to read "Steamsworn"!Fleeing Ancora to keep thier families safe has taken a great tool on everyone。 Is everyone really safe because they aren't there? Or is that a pretty lie they tell themselves so they can do what needs doing? Jacob is glad that he at least has Alice, Charles, and Samuel。 At least he didn't cause their deaths。。。 So far。 Cave is like nothing Jacob could have ever imagined。 How can there be so many diverse places in the Deadlqnds when they are supposed to be *dead*? How many other lies was he brought up to believe as truths? It is hard to trust in anything when your foundation has been so efficiently destroyed。 Will they be able to find out the origins of the transmitters? Who exactly is the real enemy? Can they bring the Butcher to justice? Or is that a suicide mission? At least they are making new friends along the way! Right???? ***This series is suitable for young adult through adult readers who enjoy steampunk action adventures filled documentaries and oddest humor :) 。。。more

The extent of the mechanics explained is very impressive。 This is the most overtly steampunk book I have ever read。 The explanations are fascinating and the book moves at a quick pace。 The conversation is not drawn out and this author is very skilled at character development。

Not sure how the trilogy was supposed to flow。 The first two books basically just ended。 The last book was on monotonous battle travel scene。

Cynthia Larson

It would make a great movie!!

Interesting read for a time period of steam powered tools--in a world far far away。

I "read" this via Audbile。 This was the about the fourth time I have read this set of books。 The story is very well done creating a lush and dangerous world that I would love to see in real life。 All the characters are engaging and you truly care for each on more and more as the story progresses。 I would love to see a fourth book that wraps up some loose ends but the ending is quite satisfying。 I know I will be reading this book again as it quickly became a favorite story。 I "read" this via Audbile。 This was the about the fourth time I have read this set of books。 The story is very well done creating a lush and dangerous world that I would love to see in real life。 All the characters are engaging and you truly care for each on more and more as the story progresses。 I would love to see a fourth book that wraps up some loose ends but the ending is quite satisfying。 I know I will be reading this book again as it quickly became a favorite story。 。。。more

That is why no one remembers them in book one and the characters talk about train journies they took five years ago in book three! Wait。。。There is also a distinct lack of conflict in the story。 This is the only book I can think of where the big final gambit plan goes off without a hitch。 The antagonist is a non-entity throughout most of the book one and three and is only mentioned in book two。And let us talk about said antagonist for a moment。 He is evil for evil sake, the easiest and laziest villain to write。 That would not be such a big deal except for his change in motivation。 At the start of the first book, he wants to endanger the lower class so he can keep up the flow of coal for his machines, but, by book three, he is killing them by throwing them off a cliff。 I guess he just doesn't want the coal anymore? And everyone is just okay with this despite him actively making the hole city into a slum。 Okay。。。Oh but the citizens have to have a huge shift in morality! Otherwise it wouldn't be okay when the protagonist brutally murder them! No need to worry, all the bad guys have hobbies that include rape and baby eating! Just ignor the fact that, in book one, the worst thing the upper class did was be snooty。。。 kind of。。。 ONCE。 Now they are okay with pointless murder。AVOID AT ALL COST! 。。。more

Steamborn, Steamforged, and Steamsworn, my third read/listen from author Eric Asher。 An inventive fantasy novel with a heavy dash of Steampunk。 Narrator Saskia Maarleveld’s talented narration & intriguing accent adds greatly to the book’s enjoyment。 I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it。 I’d gotten this back in July of 2017 and am just now getting around to reading it, my mistake。 Well-written, with well-developed characters。

Steamborn started off slow, slower than other books I read - other than the Thomas Covenant novels。 Glad I kept reading as it turned into a very good series with good character development and plot。

Really enjoyed the series。 Some series drag after the initial introduction of characters and themes。 This did not disappoint! Looking forward to more about Alice and Jacob。 Also would like to know about the evolution of giant bugs!
