Summary

For nearly thirty years a serial killer has been hiding in plain sight。 So has the key to an FBI agent’s dark past。

A family is murdered as they sleep。 FBI Special Agent Nina Guerrera and her new team are tasked with determining whether there is any link between this attack and another triple homicide from four years earlier and more than two thousand miles away。 In the process, they’ll discover a serial killer so cunning that his grisly trail of death spanning nearly three decades has gone undetected。 Each crime scene reminds Nina of the ghostly Latin folktale of La Llorona, which terrified her when she was an abandoned and vulnerable child。 Now it’s back to haunt her。

Nina has known evil, but these macabre reenactments are as disturbing as they are baffling。 Now she must uncover the meaning behind the rituals as the evidence leads her in an unexpected direction—far closer to home than anyone could have imagined。 As the team narrows in on a suspect, the present collides with Nina’s past in a twist of fate that forces her to make the ultimate sacrifice。

A totally riveting page Turner。Chapter after chapter, the twists and turns of the plot will not let you put this book down。 I read the entire book the first day I got it。

The crimes in this one were horrific! Yet, I found they were worse once Nina and her team began investigating and finding out the real why of why they were happening。 I hated how one person was so twisted that they managed to hurt so many people for so many years。I liked how methodical the team was as they found facts, even as the bad guy seemed to always be ahead of them by 1 step。 But it was the little moments when things suddenly "clicked" in Nina's head that really moved the case forward and The crimes in this one were horrific! A Different Dawn is the second instalment in the Nina Guerrera series, set in Phoenix, Arizona。 FBI Special Agent Guerrera and her gallant team are called to Phoenix from their Washington D。C。 base to begin an important investigation when the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program database detects two deaths labelled as bizarre that have undoubtedly been staged to resemble two murder suicides。 It is immediately clear from their evidence that the serial killer whose trail they are on only st A Different Dawn is the second instalment in the Nina Guerrera series, set in Phoenix, Arizona。 FBI Special Agent Guerrera and her gallant team are called to Phoenix from their Washington D。C。 base to begin an important investigation when the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program database detects two deaths labelled as bizarre that have undoubtedly been staged to resemble two murder suicides。 It is immediately clear from their evidence that the serial killer whose trail they are on only strikes once every four years。 The most recent case he has been linked to is that of Orthopedic surgeon Tom Doyle and his wife, ophthalmologist Meaghan Doyle, who have been brutally slaughtered along with their infant daughter in the centre of Phoenix。 The killing had been meticulously planned down to even the finest detail which adds to the notion that this mass murderer has real patience to wait such a long time between his kills。 But the police are struggling to find a plausible motive。 The last crime occurred four years ago in Manhattan。 Another aspect they have in common is the fact that they have each been committed during a leap year on the day of February 29。 Nina's team then discover that there has been a spate of eight other attacks in which there were triple fatalities—father, mother, baby daughter。 Between each incident, there is always a four-year lapse in time with the first attack having taken place 28 years ago in Phoenix before they traverse the United States。 The team must follow the clues and seek out commonalities between the murders in the hope of catching a break。 They manage to ascertain a connection to the crimes that precipitated Nina's time in foster care as a child, but once they close in on the suspected Leap Day Killer they turn up to find he has been brutally murdered, and they are too late。 Does the LDK know his days are numbered, and will Nina and her colleagues manage to apprehend him before anyone else gets hurt? This is a scintillating, compulsive and heart-pounding crime read with all the thrills, kills and chills required to make it a real page-turner。 The mystery is a captivating one and plenty of meticulous police work is being carried out to identify a killer who shows no signs of stopping despite being on a spree that is nearing the thirty-year mark。 It's an even better book than its predecessor with a riveting and deftly woven plot in which Maldonado ratchets the suspense up to palpable levels and the mystery with all its gripping twists and misdirection unravel。 This is a terrifying, thoroughly entertaining cat and mouse tale that is difficult to put down。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

What type of job would allow him the flexibility to plan and carry out his disturbing ritual Leap Day killings? The La Llorona folklore which had terrified Nina as a child in the orphanage may provide an important clue。 But as the team narrows in on a suspect, a bombshell revelation rocks Nina to the core。 Nina and her team try to set up a trap but they realizes they are dealing with a devious, remorseless killer who is determined to finish what he started 28 years ago at any cost。This was another thrilling read in the Nina Guerrara series。I received a digital ARC from Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer with no requirements for a review。 I voluntarily read this book and provided this review。 。。。more

WOW!! What a rollercoaster this book was。 I consumed it in a little over 24hours I simply couldn't put it down。 Nina Guerrera is back in a thrilling case with her precocious team of special agents。 The case takes them back to Phoenix, Arizona and the scene of a gruesome crime that has even more gruesome consequences as they dig deeper。 Nina and the team ruffle some feathers along the way, discover some horrifying details that date back three decades and uncover some unbelievable coincidences in WOW!! Isabella Maldonado has a way of drawing you into the story so you feel a part of the team。 You get a feel for police/FBI procedure which I am sure draws on her extensive experience in that field。I want to thank the author, NetGalley and Thomas and Mercer for an advanced copy of this fantastic book for my honest review。 #ADifferentDawn #NetGalley 。。。more

Thanks to Thomas & Mercer and the author for this Netgalley ARC in exchange for an honest review。 I love this series。 I really don't read a lot of crime thrillers/police procedurals, and I wasn't expecting it to be anything special but when I read The Cipher last year, I fell in love with Nina and her story。 This second instalment was just as good。 The writing is fast-paced and accessible but still detailed and emotive。 I love the way all the characters are developed, and I love the slow reveal Thanks to Thomas & Mercer and the author for this Netgalley ARC in exchange for an honest review。 I love this series。 I really don't read a lot of crime thrillers/police procedurals, and I wasn't expecting it to be anything special but when I read The Cipher last year, I fell in love with Nina and her story。 This second instalment was just as good。 The writing is fast-paced and accessible but still detailed and emotive。 I love the way all the characters are developed, and I love the slow reveal of information as the team gather momentum with their investigation。 Such a great crime thriller series - I would highly recommend。 。。。more

“Nina realized she had been living her entire life on borrowed time。 Now the moment had arrived when her story reached its end。 Destiny had finally caught up to her。”Leap day。 People born on this day celebrate their birthdays in a variety of fun ways。 And some celebrate in not so fun ways— like murdering a mother, father, and newborn baby girl every four years。 A leap day serial killer is the plot of book two in this series。 Following her high profile case in book one, The Cipher, Nina Guerrera “Nina realized she had been living her entire life on borrowed time。 Now the moment had arrived when her story reached its end。 Destiny had finally caught up to her。”Leap day。 People born on this day celebrate their birthdays in a variety of fun ways。 And some celebrate in not so fun ways— like murdering a mother, father, and newborn baby girl every four years。 A leap day serial killer is the plot of book two in this series。 Following her high profile case in book one, The Cipher, Nina Guerrera and her newly compiled FBI specialty team—made up of her, a criminal profiler, a computer wiz, and a former Navy SEAL— are investigating a double homicide/suicide case。 The case escalates when possible ties to other double homicide/suicides across the country spanning decades are discovered and they realize they may have a bunch of triple murders on their hands!Profiler Jeffrey Wade enlightens us on the mind of the suspected killer— a narcissist who also has Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD)- “A black hole is an accurate description of an untreated psychopathic narcissist。” And now they must track down this murderous black hole in the desert of Phoenix, Arizona before more people die or he hides away undetected for another 4 years。 The urgency increases as they begin unraveling threads, putting Agent Guerrera firmly in the killer’s sights, forcing her to come to terms with part of her past she never knew she needed to。 It lives up to the same intense and suspenseful storyline as the first one and I really enjoyed it。 This is shaping up to be a great series! The characters were, again, distinct and developed。 Nina is the focus but we see her relationship with Wade and Kent progress in this one。 And am I the only one that thinks Bianca is going to be officially joining the team in the not so distant future?? I think that would be a great addition in characters and plot possibilities。 (Although, I’d prefer she stop using the f-word if Maldonado is going to bulk up Bianca’s lines in the next book。)There were some points in the book that I felt there to be a bit of hand-holding in defining terms。 For example, they made it seem like a killer’s ‘signature’ was some new term law enforcement officers had never heard of before。 Or when the Spanish phrase ‘Dónde están mis hijos?’ was used Kent translated it “That means, ‘where are my children” and then the book says “Nina recalled that he spoke four languages。” And the collective reader audience goes: “Uh, yeah。 We only speak one and a half languages and we all know what that means。 Pipe down Kent, we didn’t need you for this。” (Okay… it was either children or Cheetos but I think we would have figured it out)For the learners out there, here are three interesting things I learned while reading (besides the characteristics of narcissism that I’m trying to stop pinning on everyone I know…just jokes…。 It’s only a couple people。。。)—- Revenge filicide= Filicide is the technical term for the murder of one’s own offspring so revenge filicide is killing your child to get back at someone else。 I’m glad I didn’t know this term before because if this was well-known, we would live in a very sad society indeed。 - “People with ASPD only make up about one to three percent of the overall population, but they constitute anywhere from forty to seventy percent of those in prison。”I found this statistic a bit shocking! Especially because after reading Just Mercy you kinda start feeling like we need to get everyone out of prison。 I did a little googling on this stat and I did find a study that indicated ASPD rates in prison to be anywhere between 50-80% depending on the study (and probably method of diagnosing)。 This particular study was researching violent acts done in prison by newly imprisoned people with ASPD and actually found that number to be fairly low calling into question the legal push for capital punishment for violent offenders with ASPD。 I don’t know if I’m convinced and this leads me to more questions than I can find answers for and really has nothing to do with this story, but ANYWAY, it’s fascinating stuff, yeah?- Nuyorican—/n(y)o͞oˈyôrēkən/)= a Puerto Rican living in the US, especially in New York CitySo, in summation, if you haven’t read The Cipher, head over there first and read this series from the beginning。 If you’ve already read book one, then continue forth, fellow reader— I believe you will be glad you did!**Received an ARC via NetGalley**Book Review Blog: www。shelfreflection。comPinterest: @shelfreflectionblog 。。。more

I read the first book in this series and enjoyed it, so when given the opportunity to read an ARC of the next book I took it。‘A Different Dawn’ picks up a few months after book 1 ‘The Cipher’。 FBI Special Agent Nina Guerrera and her BAU team are called back to Phoenix Arizona to investigate any links between a family that is murdered recently and a family that was killed four years earlier in New York City。 The team discovers more than they bargained for with a serial killer who has been operati I read the first book in this series and enjoyed it, so when given the opportunity to read an ARC of the next book I took it。‘A Different Dawn’ picks up a few months after book 1 ‘The Cipher’。 FBI Special Agent Nina Guerrera and her BAU team are called back to Phoenix Arizona to investigate any links between a family that is murdered recently and a family that was killed four years earlier in New York City。 The team discovers more than they bargained for with a serial killer who has been operating for over 30 years all over America。 And as the team digs further into the past crimes, Nina begins to wonder if they have something to do with her own mysterious past。I was a little shocked at the beginning with the brutality of the crimes the BAU team were investigating。 You don’t often read about entire families being killed, but it’s explained in more detail as the BAU team work on their profile。 The cleverness of the unsub was downright scary。 Who thinks like that?We also get answers to Nina’s unexplainable childhood。 I’m really glad that the author didn’t drag out getting answers to Nina’s backstory over like 100 books。 We learn what events lead up to Nina being left in a garbage bin as a baby。 This was a very suspenseful mystery/police procedural book that I enjoyed。 It was filled with a few twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end。Hope the author keeps writing more books in this series, I want to keep reading about the Warrior Girl。** I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 ARC provided by NetGalley and the publisher* 。。。more

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC! No sophomore slump here! I must confess to enjoying this book more than the first in the series, The Cipher。 After a couple and their newborn daughter are found dead, the FBI discovers that there have been nearly identical murders across the country over the past 30 years。 As two of the crimes took place in Phoenix, Nina and the new FBI team she is part of start there。 What follows is a book that is interesting, suspenseful, and unexpectedl Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC! Thanks to NetGalley, I was lucky to grab an ARC。I started reading Isabella Maldonado's The Cipher right after Netflix announced that it was working on a feature adaption with Jennifer Lopez, and being a fan of Criminal Minds, I thoroughly enjoyed the thriller。 However what put the novel a notch above its counterparts in the genre where the personal stakes, the detailed investigation and an excellent sophisticated antagonist。 While sequels usually fail to top their predecessors, Maldonado's seque Thanks to NetGalley, I was lucky to grab an ARC。I started reading Isabella Maldonado's The Cipher right after Netflix announced that it was working on a feature adaption with Jennifer Lopez, and being a fan of Criminal Minds, I thoroughly enjoyed the thriller。 However what put the novel a notch above its counterparts in the genre where the personal stakes, the detailed investigation and an excellent sophisticated antagonist。 While sequels usually fail to top their predecessors, Maldonado's sequel successfully manages to top it up in all departments with superb team dynamics thrown into the mix。 Even though this is only second novel the main protagonist, Nina Guerrera, already feels more developed, as relies on each member of the team to help in catching a comparatively more complicated psychopath。 Personally I cant wait what Isabella Maldonado brings in next。 #ADifferentDawn #NetGalley 。。。more

The second book in the Nina Guerrera series finds the FBI agent and her team going up against a truly horrific criminal。 After a couple and their newborn daughter are found dead in Phoenix the FBI is called in to help investigate。 They find that the deaths, while set up to look like a murder-suicide case, are actually all murders。 The strange part is that as they keep investigating they find similar cases (triple murders) going back twenty-eight years, with each crime occurring on February 29。 A The second book in the Nina Guerrera series finds the FBI agent and her team going up against a truly horrific criminal。 After a couple and their newborn daughter are found dead in Phoenix the FBI is called in to help investigate。 They find that the deaths, while set up to look like a murder-suicide case, are actually all murders。 The strange part is that as they keep investigating they find similar cases (triple murders) going back twenty-eight years, with each crime occurring on February 29。 As they re-examine the first case, Guerrera discovers a shocking personal connection to the case。 This book is another gripping entry in the Nina Guerrera series。 She continues to learn how to be part of a team。 Isabella Maldonado does a great job of showing how the FBI team goes through an investigation piece by piece。 I can’t wait for the third book!
