Summary

Peter Pan has crash-landed back on Neverland。 But this is not the island he remembers。

Desperate to rescue Claire and the fractured Lost Boys, Peter must unravel what truly tore his dreamland apart。 But with each step, he is haunted by more of his own broken memories。 Not even Pan himself is what he seems。

Claire Kenton is chained to a pirate ship, watching the wreckage of Neverland rocked by tempests。 When she finally finds her brother, Connor is every bit as shattered as the island。 Claire may have pixie dust flowing in her veins—but the light of Neverland is flickering dangerously close to going out forever。

To rescue Neverland from the inescapable shadow, the boy who never grew up and the girl who grew up too fast will have to sacrifice the only thing they have left: each other。

Shadow is a young adult fantasy book that is written by Kara Swanson。 This is book two in the Heirs of the Neverland Series。 I did not read book one。 I may go back and read it just so I have a full understanding of the series。 I feel like I was a bit lost, but as I continued to read I was able to sort all the character and back grounds out。 Fantasy is not my usual go to genre to read, but this book drew me in within the first chapter。 Usually, my son and I read young adult books together。 He is Shadow is a young adult fantasy book that is written by Kara Swanson。 This is book two in the Heirs of the Neverland Series。 I did not read book one。 I may go back and read it just so I have a full understanding of the series。 I feel like I was a bit lost, but as I continued to read I was able to sort all the character and back grounds out。 Fantasy is not my usual go to genre to read, but this book drew me in within the first chapter。 Usually, my son and I read young adult books together。 He is 10, but reads at an advanced level。 He would not have been ready for this book。 This book had some dark undertones。 The author brilliantly took what we all think of Neverland is and turned it into nightmares and a whole plot twist。 I would recommend this book for ages 14 and up。 However, I, as a parent would recommend you read this book first。 Peter wants to figure out what has happened to Neverland。 He knows that he needs to rescue the lost boys and Claire。 He is confused to what has happened。 Claire is chained to a pirate ship and she is watching Neverland become no more。 It was fun to see my childhood fairytale brought to a new light。 Well written characters, very intriguing story line, great Biblical reminders。 I enjoyed this book。 I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program, all thoughts are my own。 。。。more

This is a sequel so read Dust first (IMO that the best thing to do to get the full effect)。 I'm still a huge fan of fair tale retellings and I like even more when they continue on。 Peter is still a lot darker than we think of Peter Pan being。 Neverland is familiar and yet foreign at the same time。 There is a lot of growing up and learning for him to do。 Connor and Claire were really well written。I loved Dust and was a bit hesitant to read this because I didn't think the author could make it any This is a sequel so read Dust first (IMO that the best thing to do to get the full effect)。 I'm still a huge fan of fair tale retellings and I like even more when they continue on。 Peter is still a lot darker than we think of Peter Pan being。 Neverland is familiar and yet foreign at the same time。 There is a lot of growing up and learning for him to do。 Connor and Claire were really well written。I loved Dust and was a bit hesitant to read this because I didn't think the author could make it any better。 I was wrong。 This book caught me at the start and I only put it down when absolutely necessary。 There are a lot of twists and turns and things that had me going one way and then the other and I just loved every minute of it。 5/5Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book via Celebrate Lit。 I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine。 。。。more

While I enjoyed book 1, I didn't experience the intense love and connection that many readers did with that book。 I wasn't sure if I was even going to read book 2。 Book 1 is very slow and very focused on slow, angsty character development, which is not my cup of tea (though, that kind of book appeals to a lot of people! I simultaneously wanted to race through Shadow while also savoring every word。 An impossible feat, to be sure。 Which means one thing: I'll be reading this story again and again。 I don't reread many books。 This is the exception。 I knew when I read Dust that I'd need Shadow but I had no idea that it might become my favorite of the two。 Shadow has a unique depth to it that I found myself falling in love with。 While it's YA, there are profound truths within the pages that a person of any age can dis I simultaneously wanted to race through Shadow while also savoring every word。 An impossible feat, to be sure。 Which means one thing: I'll be reading this story again and again。 I don't reread many books。 This is the exception。 I knew when I read Dust that I'd need Shadow but I had no idea that it might become my favorite of the two。 Shadow has a unique depth to it that I found myself falling in love with。 While it's YA, there are profound truths within the pages that a person of any age can discover。 Sometimes, growing up isn't so bad。 The shadows of our past linger with us, never quite willing to disappear。 Peter must face the things he's done, and his journey is one of sadness and sacrifice。 Expertly crafted characters and Neverland like you've never seen it before, Shadow is an exceptional story you don't want to miss。 I received a copy of this book through Celebrate Lit。 I was not required to leave a positive review。 All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own。 。。。more

Shadow is the second Heirs to Neverland book by Kara Swanson。 In the past, I have stated that I firmly believe that above all genres, fantasy is one in which it is most important to read books in a series in order。。。 and I still firmly believe that to be true。 However, I must say that I had not previously read Dust and fully expected to find myself lost as I began to read。。。 and while I certainly know I was missing some backstory, I didn't feel as lost as I might typically coming into a fantasy Shadow is the second Heirs to Neverland book by Kara Swanson。 In the past, I have stated that I firmly believe that above all genres, fantasy is one in which it is most important to read books in a series in order。。。 and I still firmly believe that to be true。 However, I must say that I had not previously read Dust and fully expected to find myself lost as I began to read。。。 and while I certainly know I was missing some backstory, I didn't feel as lost as I might typically coming into a fantasy series mid-story。 Perhaps this had to do with having familiarity with Neverland to some degree from the Peter Pan stories。。。 regardless, while I wasn't as lost as expected, I definitely would still recommend reading the first book first anyway! While I don't typically care too much for fantasy, this one really did draw me in more than I anticipated。。。 again, perhaps that in part had to do with the familiarity and nostalgia。。。 beyond that though it was just really beautifully written。。。 the author drew me into Neverland in a whole new way and I found it fascinating。 It was a bit dark at times, but enjoyable none the less。 While this is a young adult read, as an adult, I still enjoyed it, and I do believe it's one that I would have enjoyed a lot as a teenager too。。。 whether you're looking for a book for the young adult reader in your life or looking for a great fantasy read for yourself, this is definitely one worth checking out。 **I received a complimentary copy of this book for consideration。 All thoughts are my own。 。。。more

When I first signed up to read and review Shadow, I didn’t have any idea what I was getting into。 I have been trying to be more open about fantasy and dip my toes into a genre that I don’t normally read。 I do not recommend starting with this book, which is the second in the duology。 Dust is the first one and we’re introduced to the characters and what I would say is the setting for the second book, Shadow。Shadow is darker than the first one but I don’t think its any worse that what I would assum When I first signed up to read and review Shadow, I didn’t have any idea what I was getting into。 I have been trying to be more open about fantasy and dip my toes into a genre that I don’t normally read。 I do not recommend starting with this book, which is the second in the duology。 Dust is the first one and we’re introduced to the characters and what I would say is the setting for the second book, Shadow。Shadow is darker than the first one but I don’t think its any worse that what I would assume Lord of the Rings to be (yeah, I haven’t read that either)。 But honestly, it really didn’t bother me。 YA tends to have darker themes and I think it goes along with how Swanson opens up her book when she quoted G。K。 Chesterton, “Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist。 Children already know that dragons exist。 Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed。” These are stories that the maturing youth gravitate towards as the change in responsibilities grow in their hearts and minds。 It is not as simple anymore, and these books open that gateway for them。Shadow will not be for everyone。 I can see some more conservative Christians not wanting to expose their children to the dark themes and even some of the British language (that we would consider inappropriate)。All in all, I did enjoy this duology, more than I expected considering that this is based off of Peter Pan (not one of my favorite books, and it is dark if you haven’t read the original。) Peter is not at all like the character that Disney portrayed him, and I think Swanson did a much better job and I look forward to reading more by this author! 。。。more

We all need to be reminded of a little light。 From the get-go, this book was intense。 It never slowed, only built and built to a brilliant ending。 I’m quite sad it’s over, and now I’m rooting for television series to made of the duology! For YA fantasy, I thought it was perfectly whimsical and enjoyable to read。 The characters are lovable and it’s fun to bring a bit more magic to an already beloved character (Peter Pan。) I’d definitely recommend this to 6-8 graders!

Right up front, I advise reading the first book in this pair, Dust, first so you won’t be lost like I was (and as the characters in the story were)。 This one begins in the middle of the action。 Claire, who has gone to Neverland in search of her missing brother, Connor, but runs into way too much trouble and danger。 The Young Adult novel is filled with surprises and twists, but is also sad and dark because Neverland is no longer a fun playground but has been overcome by evil。 I expected the tale Right up front, I advise reading the first book in this pair, Dust, first so you won’t be lost like I was (and as the characters in the story were)。 This one begins in the middle of the action。 Claire, who has gone to Neverland in search of her missing brother, Connor, but runs into way too much trouble and danger。 The Young Adult novel is filled with surprises and twists, but is also sad and dark because Neverland is no longer a fun playground but has been overcome by evil。 I expected the tale to be a bit more lighthearted reminiscent of the children’s storybook about Peter Pan, from which it sprang。 And I felt a bit shocked that the characters would swear, but I guess it’s not unexpected。 The main characters narrate the scenes in first person, which sometimes made me confused as I was caught up in the story and had to slow down and check to see which “I” voice was speaking—Claire or Peter。 I’m not into fantasy tales and magic, but the author did a good job portraying this battle of evil vs。 good。 I received a copy from Celebrate Lit。 all opinions are my own。 。。。more

I have been looking forwards to reading this book since I finished Dust a year ago, and this book met my expectations! It is a direct continuation of the Peter Pan storyline that was started in Dust, and it was really fun。 It was a lot darker than Dust, and I think that I like Dust more out of the duology, but overall I think it was a really coherent and well done set of books。Shadow was set immediately after the end of Dust (60-70 years after the end of the Peter Pan story) and followed the same Peter Pan storyline, where Neverland is slowly dying and it is up to Peter to restore it。 Unlike Dust, which happens in Peter Pan London, this book happens entirely in Neverland, and it was thoroughly entrenched in the fantasy world。 It took me a while to get back into the story, and remember the significance of the characters, and so I would recommend reading both books pretty closely to each other。The imagery of this book was immaculate: I LOVED all the description of the scenery and the setting: it was so vividly described & it was all so magical! Like in Dust, I wasn’t a huge fan of any of the main characters and really struggled to relate to them, though that generally happens to some degree with me for fantasy books。 Peter and Claire’s character development was really incredible, and I really loved both of their growths over the course of the book。The pacing of the story felt slow, although the story itself occurred over the course of only a couple days (a few months, but only a few specific days were closely described)。 The timing of this story was well done: although there was a section where there was a several month gap, it didn’t feel out of place or hard to follow at all, which happens frequently in books where there are gaps like that。I really liked the overall message of the book: that no matter how hard you want it, reality is such that this world is a broken place and the only thing you can do is to do your part to make it better, not trying to hang on to the past。 The hope, the promise, the future–this story arc was incredible!Overall, I really liked this book for the storytelling, the setting, and the character growth。 I loved how the same magic and wonder from Dust and Peter Pan was captured, but with a dose of reality and the darkness that is also in the world。 The hope in this book was really touching to read, despite how heavy and dark this book was, which really encapsulates what this book is like。My Rating-7/10I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author。 All views expressed are only my honest opinion; I was not required to write a positive review。This review first appeared on: https://losingthebusyness。wordpress。c。。。 。。。more

Award-winning author Kara Swanson concludes her Peter Pan retelling in this young adult version, revealing a darker side to this children’s story。In Shadow, Peter Pan returns to Neverland only to find it a very different place。 Claire is imprisoned by Captain Hook。 Neverland is dark and oppressive。 Claire’s brother Connor is not who she remembers -- he runs things with a heavy hand, hungry for more power and magic。 Instead of Peter’s dream world, it is Connor’s nightmare and Neverland is dying。 Award-winning author Kara Swanson concludes her Peter Pan retelling in this young adult version, revealing a darker side to this children’s story。In Shadow, Peter Pan returns to Neverland only to find it a very different place。 Claire is imprisoned by Captain Hook。 Neverland is dark and oppressive。 Claire’s brother Connor is not who she remembers -- he runs things with a heavy hand, hungry for more power and magic。 Instead of Peter’s dream world, it is Connor’s nightmare and Neverland is dying。 Is there enough pixie dust to turn the tide? Can they stop Connor before Neverland is completely destroyed?Swanson continues her Peter Pan fairy tale variation with more adventure, and magic (especially dark magic) in her unpredictable storyline, again told from both Peter’s and Claire’s point of view。 Her character development and world building is excellent, as is her creativity in the development of the plot。 While one doesn't need to read Dust (book 1) first, it is recommended to get the full experience of Neverland in a way one hasn't experienced before。There is a light faith element woven into the story。 There is mild violence and a few deaths, some language, some kissing/light romance, talk of past abuse/trauma, etc。 that might be triggers for some readers -- but there is hope, light even in the darkest darkness。 As this engaging story unfolds, the emotions of the characters are explored in more depth。 There is more pain, action, adventure, and uncertainty that things will resolve in a positive way。 The overall theme is when all looks bleak, there is light that shatters the darkness。 Recommended for young adult collections in school and public libraries。Disclaimer: Book reviews are my honest opinion of books I either purchased or received free of cost from the publishers, publicists, and/or authors。 。。。more

Shadow by Kara Swanson begins with a moment on Neverland that jumps off right where Dust ends, so if readers are not familiar with what occurred in Dust, they should go and read the first book。 I enjoy the familiarity of Peter Pan and the numerous characters, so of course, the imagination takes me to the Disney's Peter Pan and the colorful Neverland。 But Swanson does add a little more depth and creepiness to the island with the Dark Magic element。 Not that I minded at all。 Connor does have the d Shadow by Kara Swanson begins with a moment on Neverland that jumps off right where Dust ends, so if readers are not familiar with what occurred in Dust, they should go and read the first book。 I enjoy the familiarity of Peter Pan and the numerous characters, so of course, the imagination takes me to the Disney's Peter Pan and the colorful Neverland。 But Swanson does add a little more depth and creepiness to the island with the Dark Magic element。 Not that I minded at all。 Connor does have the dark magic trying to crack out of his skin, so his body descriptions are not the most pleasant。 Claire, the heroine, learns more about her and Connor's past。 Even goes so far as to learn more about Peter's past。 The plot was definitely unique and different than the Disney friendly version。 This tale was original and really captured and held my attention。 I do enjoy the climactic moment。 It is a true battle to the end。 Overall, Shadow by Kara Swanson is an interesting take on the future of Peter Pan and Neverland。 I think all teens who enjoy adventure and the naivety of Peter Pan should pick up this novel。 They will definitely learn something about being the light in a dark world。I received a complimentary copy of Shadow by Kara Swanson that is published by Enclave Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own。 。。。more

I wasn’t prepared for the darkness this story took on。 I had to go back to the previous book in the series to see if there was any hint as to why this story felt so different。 The author presents Neverland in its eerie, dreadful state of gloom that hangs over the place。 What has caused this once happy place to descend into darkness? Connor and Claire’s reunion is very intriguing and I wasn’t quite sure if I trusted Connor。 I was mesmerized by the story and how easily I felt part of it。 Oh how I was on the edge of my seat as Claire makes a deal with Connor。 You can smell the deceit as Connor takes on more power than Claire realized。 What is the ultimate plan? Will Neverland be saved or taken over by evil? This statement really grabbed my attention; “You can’t heal a wound by making one。” How many times have we had deep emotional pain that only got worse when we covered it up with more emotional and deep pain? If only we would learn to let God heal us instead of keeping our pain and adding more each day。 As secrets are slowly brought to the surface the adventure really picks up。 Power is an ugly thing that breathes in this story。 I could feel the hurt from Claire as she realizes people she loved have betrayed her。 Can she stop the evil from continuing ? The shadow is displayed as something sinister ready for destruction。 I started thinking about how we sometimes allow the enemy to deceive us and find ourselves going against God。 The story was everything I had hoped for as the author shows us how darkness cannot win when light is shines on it。 Now what does that remind me of? Well of course it’s Jesus that shines light in our dark places and brings us faith and peace。I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit。 The review is my own opinion。 。。。more

Hm。。 I have mixed feelings about this book。 While it resolved the conflicts set up in Dust (and I think these should have been one combined, longer book), it wasn't fantastically spectacular and some aspects felt a little overdone (the obvious light/dark magical allegorical metaphors aren't my thing anyway)。 Story-wise, it's not bad, either, but the POV shifts caught me off guard every single chapter because I wasn't paying close attention to the titles。 So, even though it isn't my thing (and I Hm。。 I have mixed feelings about this book。 While it resolved the conflicts set up in Dust (and I think these should have been one combined, longer book), it wasn't fantastically spectacular and some aspects felt a little overdone (the obvious light/dark magical allegorical metaphors aren't my thing anyway)。 Story-wise, it's not bad, either, but the POV shifts caught me off guard every single chapter because I wasn't paying close attention to the titles。 So, even though it isn't my thing (and I was anticipating that), I preordered this because I really appreciate Kara, her spirit, and everything she does to support young writers ☺️ 。。。more

Kara Swanson continues her Peter Pan story in Shadow which picks up pretty much where Dust left off。 Since it has been a while since I read Dust, a re-cap of that story would have been helpful。 I love that Peter is learning that it is okay (and necessary) to grow up。 I love it that Claire and Peter learn to do unselfish things which will benefit others。 I love that Kara Swanson has included a creator who brings light。 I am sure that fans of Peter Pan stories will enjoy Kara Swanson’s version。I d Kara Swanson continues her Peter Pan story in Shadow which picks up pretty much where Dust left off。 Since it has been a while since I read Dust, a re-cap of that story would have been helpful。 I love that Peter is learning that it is okay (and necessary) to grow up。 I love it that Claire and Peter learn to do unselfish things which will benefit others。 I love that Kara Swanson has included a creator who brings light。 I am sure that fans of Peter Pan stories will enjoy Kara Swanson’s version。I don’t know if Swanson has another book planned for the series, but I’d enjoy reading it if she does。 One thing librarians and parents need to be aware of is that Shadow does contain British forms of swearing/profanity and you need to consider whether or not you want your students/children repeating the language found in the book。 The language is probably not appropriate in all audiencesI received a complimentary copy of Shadow。 This is my honest review。 。。。more

" Shadow" by Kara Swanson is book 2 in the "Heirs of Neverland" series。 I really recommend reading book one first or you might be wondering what is going on。 I enjoyed the first book, but I found this book to be filled with evil and many times, I wanted to quit reading this book。 I did finish the entire book and it does end on a happy ever after。 Even through it does surprise me because Peter is still bringing children to the island。 I don't know if this is an spoiled alert, and I am not an auth " Shadow" by Kara Swanson is book 2 in the "Heirs of Neverland" series。 I really recommend reading book one first or you might be wondering what is going on。 I enjoyed the first book, but I found this book to be filled with evil and many times, I wanted to quit reading this book。 I did finish the entire book and it does end on a happy ever after。 Even through it does surprise me because Peter is still bringing children to the island。 I don't know if this is an spoiled alert, and I am not an author but you would think with all that has happened before in the dark story it would have a different ending but I guess if it did then Peter Pan wouldn't be Peter Pan and Neverland won't be Neverland right? And, after all this story it isn't true, right? It's only someone imagination! I was going to give my grandson my copy of dust and buy a copy of "Shadow" for him because my copy is an ebook but after finishing reading this book, I will not be giving him either one。 I think this is a book that readers are gonna really like or not like at all。 I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are mine。 。。。more

When Shadows Take on New Motives Readers Better BewareI had forgotten all about the part in Peter Pan where Peter cuts off his shadow。 Maybe it is just the Disney rendition of it?  I don't know。 But in Shadow, Kara Swanson picks up with the subtle but rich symbolism and near allegory she used in Dust and runs with it。Bit by bit, layer by layer, she lays out the entire story with all the questions answered before we ever get to the reveal, and yet I couldn't pin it down。  I could see the answer j When Shadows Take on New Motives Readers Better BewareI had forgotten all about the part in Peter Pan where Peter cuts off his shadow。 Maybe it is just the Disney rendition of it?  I don't know。 But in Shadow, Kara Swanson picks up with the subtle but rich symbolism and near allegory she used in Dust and runs with it。Bit by bit, layer by layer, she lays out the entire story with all the questions answered before we ever get to the reveal, and yet I couldn't pin it down。  I could see the answer just sitting there, but I never knew what it meant!  Brilliant writing?  Probably。 My lack of knowledge or interest in the original stories of Neverland?  I'm sure it played into the whole thing。 In fact, I suspect there's a lot of both of those, now that I think of it。Here's the thing, though。 It doesn't matter。 This story is so rich, deep, heartbreaking, and inspiring that she could have handed me every clue in a neatly organized report, or sprung them all on me a second before the reveal, and I doubt that I would have cared。Because this book。。。 is that amazing。Like many fantasy works, Shadow is darker than its predecessor。  And I'm glad, actually。 With the parallels I see between this story and the redemption story of Jesus, it needs to be。 Think about it。 We don't see the Light for the brilliance it is, without first acknowledging darkness。That's another parallel to the first book。 In that one, I saw a similarity between the pixie dust and the blood of Christ (lots of poetic license, but it's there)。  In this one, I saw a parallel to the solution to the overarching problem and the beauty of Christ's love for His bride。。。 the church。Kara Swanson is a master of taking a story that I probably missed the point of as a child and making it come to life and teach me as an adult。  If that isn't beautiful, what is? I'm in love with the world she created, and I want more。 But I think this is it。  I think we have the end of Peter, Claire, and Connor。One last thing。My more literary, critical self wants to attack one choice she made at the end。 I want to say it was convenient and a problem overused in fantasy。 I want to denounce that choice。 Here's the thing, though。  I can't。 There are subtle nuances that come in because she chose to do it。 Readers get an extra measure of satisfaction they otherwise wouldn't have because Kara knew her story best and chose to do what was truly best instead of what was "textbook best" (and different people would have pointed to different textbooks!)。In the end, I think she made the best decision to ensure that Shadow reveals the entire story that needed to be told。I recommend Shadow to lovers of Peter Pan, lovers of Dust, lovers of fantasy and symbolic literature。 I don't recommend it for readers who are offended by magical elements in fantasy。   。。。more

Content Warning: Depression, mentions of self-harm and suicide。Dynamic, immersive, and dark。 This is the side of Neverland you never hoped to see。Swanson does an amazing job at having the characters grow to a point where they can realistically deal with the problems they face。The plot did seem to almost repeat itself a few times, which became a tad boring。 But once the plot 'found it's feet' so to speak, we were back to the expert pacing Swanson showed in book 1。This is definitely worth a read f Content Warning: Depression, mentions of self-harm and suicide。Dynamic, immersive, and dark。 This is the side of Neverland you never hoped to see。Swanson does an amazing job at having the characters grow to a point where they can realistically deal with the problems they face。The plot did seem to almost repeat itself a few times, which became a tad boring。 But once the plot 'found it's feet' so to speak, we were back to the expert pacing Swanson showed in book 1。This is definitely worth a read for any Peter Pan fans, or any fans of darker fairytales! 。。。more

I have some mixed feelings about Shadow (book two of the Heirs of Neverland duology) by Kara Swanson。The second book picks right up from where Dust finished, so those of us who have waited for the rest of the story may want to refresh themselves with the last chapter of the previous book。 Now, Peter and Claire are in Neverland and trying to save it。There is action and moments of truth sprinkled into the darkness that covers Neverland。 There’s also some violence that may make reader cringe in a p I have some mixed feelings about Shadow (book two of the Heirs of Neverland duology) by Kara Swanson。The second book picks right up from where Dust finished, so those of us who have waited for the rest of the story may want to refresh themselves with the last chapter of the previous book。 Now, Peter and Claire are in Neverland and trying to save it。There is action and moments of truth sprinkled into the darkness that covers Neverland。 There’s also some violence that may make reader cringe in a place or two。 But I can really appreciate that Swanson leaves us in a place of hope for Peter and Claire。Here’s where I waiver on this book。 There is one character in the book that I would have appreciate a little more redemption for。 I just felt sorry for him at the end of the book。 At the same time, that’s how life works。 Some people turn toward the light while some people reject it。 So while the novel is an escape in a way, it also mirrors life。Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

This!! This YA retelling of a childhood favorite, Peter Pan, and how Neverland came to be, is a must-read for all Peter Pan lovers。 Some of us reluctantly left Peter Pan behind, realizing we had to grow up, wishing we could stay in his world, but our metaphysical world marches on, not allowing that。 Somehow, Kara Swanson’s Heirs of Neverland series has healed that yearning of my soul to stay in Neverland, but most wonderfully。 Swanson guides us first in Dust, now in Shadow, to meet the present, This!! Enough angst, despair, evil, intrigue, with glimmers of hope, love, and growth struggling to break through to appeal to both young adults, those who work with them, and for all who once journeyed with Pan and Wendy to Neverland。 Just incredible!!Notable Quotables:“You can’t heal a wound by making one。”。。。magic lurks in the unexpected places。” 。。。more

I recently began reading more fantasy/sci fi novels and I am thrilled that Kara Swanson's books found me。 This book is the second book in the Heirs of Neverland series and the books must be read in order to follow the plot line。 Kara Swanson has a gifted voice in recreating fairy tales and I felt totally immersed in the wonder and magic of this series。 This book does have darkness that Claire and Peter must overcome but I loved that a little "faith, trust, and pixie dust" brought many things to I recently began reading more fantasy/sci fi novels and I am thrilled that Kara Swanson's books found me。 This book is the second book in the Heirs of Neverland series and the books must be read in order to follow the plot line。 Kara Swanson has a gifted voice in recreating fairy tales and I felt totally immersed in the wonder and magic of this series。 This book does have darkness that Claire and Peter must overcome but I loved that a little "faith, trust, and pixie dust" brought many things to light and wholeness。 The author skillfully recreates Neverland where the reader can see and touch the island of magic。The characters are deeply layered and amazing - even those who seem like villains of the story。 Connor, Hook, and Paige have backstories and pasts that lead them to the decisions they make and these details blur the vicious edge around the characters。 Peter is not totally innocent when it comes to why their home is fracturing; his desire to do good despite his past childlike ignorance and dismissal of others and his maturation through journey of forgiveness and repentance are heart-breaking yet encouraging and very real。 Claire is such a paradox - fearful yet strong, compassionate yet filled with hate and anger at times, desiring love and acceptance yet pushing people away - and she is the true hero of this story as she gently guides Peter into the world of "grown-ups" where magic is still palpable and alive。If you enjoy fantasy/fairy tale reimagining, you will totally fall in love with this book and series。 Kara Swanson has another fan!I received the book via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment。 All opinions are solely my own。 。。。more

I really wanted to like this more, but there were some things that just didn't work for me。Shadow is a very dark book, which I think is good for certain times and people。 However, I felt like 90% of the story was so terrible and hopeless, that it desensitized me to the happenings。 I really wished we had more relief in between all the horror。 The solution at the end didn't make that much sense to me either, and I wish we'd gotten more of an explanation for why things turned out well when darkness I really wanted to like this more, but there were some things that just didn't work for me。Shadow is a very dark book, which I think is good for certain times and people。 However, I felt like 90% of the story was so terrible and hopeless, that it desensitized me to the happenings。 I really wished we had more relief in between all the horror。 The solution at the end didn't make that much sense to me either, and I wish we'd gotten more of an explanation for why things turned out well when darkness had won。 Multiple times。 Also it felt like there were too many villains, and every time one was "defeated," another one would show up out of nowhere。 It just became confusing and noisy。However, I still liked a lot。 Peter's growth was natural and beautiful, and Claire had become so great after the last book。 Swanson has a way with words and paints thrilling images that plunge us into her story。 I especially loved the scenes with Lily and her people, and the ending was sweet。I know everyone always talks about packing in action so the reader doesn't get bored, but I think this book would be a true gem if we'd been able to take a breath every now and then and enjoy the beautiful, broken world Swanson crafted。 。。。more

It's hard to follow up a stellar book like Dust。 Shadow did not disappoint。Shadow takes you deep into Neverland, which grows more and more broken every day。 It shows the darker side of the island Peter loves so much, and his aching passion to save it。 We see Claire in her element, fighting through her brokenness but also growing stronger。 Tootles。 (need I say more?)This is a beautiful, magical story filled with heartache, hope, and characters you want to put in your pocket and take home。 The onl It's hard to follow up a stellar book like Dust。 Shadow did not disappoint。Shadow takes you deep into Neverland, which grows more and more broken every day。 It shows the darker side of the island Peter loves so much, and his aching passion to save it。 We see Claire in her element, fighting through her brokenness but also growing stronger。 Tootles。 (need I say more?)This is a beautiful, magical story filled with heartache, hope, and characters you want to put in your pocket and take home。 The only thing I wish I could change about it is that it's the end of Peter and Claire's story!
