Summary

A battle-worn lawyer fights for a young man’s life in this criminally enthralling legal thriller。

Teen pop star Brittany Crutcher is found dead in small-town Tennessee。 For attorney Bocephus Haynes, it’s just another night in Pulaski。 Bo swore off criminal work after his last case, but the beloved singer’s murder demands answers。

The prime suspect is local high school football hero and the victim’s boyfriend, Odell Champagne。 However, this fallen athlete is one of Bo’s son’s best friends。 Bo knows this young man and does not believe him capable of the crime。

When Odell is charged with murder, Bo reluctantly takes the case, sparking outrage throughout the town。 But as Bo follows the evidence, he learns that the victim made decisions in her last hours that would give powerful forces motive to harm her。 Feeling mounting pressure from the community and the DA, Bo forges ahead。 But as the seconds count down, he wonders whether justice is even possible。

I knew。 Then I didn't know。I had this story figured out in the first third of the book。 Then I didn't。 I was wrong。 And wrong again。 That's Bailey for you。。。 Leading you down the sure path。。。 You should have taken that other fork in the path! And adding a real shocker? Of course! It will be really hard to wait for the next Bocephus installment。 If you don't read Bailey's books, you'll be missing a series that could become classic, assigned in high school。 I knew。 Then I didn't know。I had this story figured out in the first third of the book。 Then I didn't。 I was wrong。 And wrong again。 That's Bailey for you。。。 Leading you down the sure path。。。 You should have taken that other fork in the path! Gosh but I really do like Robert Baileys books。 I had preordered this when I finished book 1 and it popped up on 6th august。 I wondered if I needed to check back as I started reading but it was like I’d just finished book 1 everything was so familiar。 It was like checking in on dear old friends。 I am so looking forward to book 3。

Finally a Good ReadI was beginning to wonder when will I find a read I can actually enjoy。 I found it in ‘The Wrong Side’ When I came across it ton Amazon I recognized the character Bocephus Haynes, and said I remember reading the first book and enjoying it。Would the second one be a good read? It was and more enjoyable than the first。 I look forward to the third book, but in the interim I will have to check out more of Robert Bailey’s books。I hope they disappoint

Good BookI am from Alabama。 I can actually visualize the places and the characters。 I still believe that good trumps evil everyday。 I was raised to do the right regardless。 Need I say more。 I hope there are more books with Bocephus Haynes。

This is a legal thriller, second in a series about Black lawyer Bocephus Haynes, former college football star now practicing in his home town of Pulaski, Tennessee… infamous as the town where a notorious hate organization was formed, and a town where it’s not easy for a Black man to get a fair trial。 Bo is asked to represent Odell Champagne, high school football hero, when Odell is accused of murdering his girlfriend Brittany, a young singer on the verge of superstardom。As a legal thriller, this This is a legal thriller, second in a series about Black lawyer Bocephus Haynes, former college football star now practicing in his home town of Pulaski, Tennessee… infamous as the town where a notorious hate organization was formed, and a town where it’s not easy for a Black man to get a fair trial。 Bo is asked to represent Odell Champagne, high school football hero, when Odell is accused of murdering his girlfriend Brittany, a young singer on the verge of superstardom。As a legal thriller, this is really very good。 Bo cares about his clients, his family, his town, and the victim and her family。 It’s his own call to represent Odell, but he believes the teenager to be innocent。 It’s a tiny detail uncovered by Bo himself that finally cracks the case, when he’s able to put a witness on the stand and break their story。 The author is a lawyer and the courtroom stuff is extremely well written。I was a bit bemused by the subplot with the district attorney general and her son; this appears to have been something that carried through from the first book。 It doesn’t actually do anything here apart from take the ‘General’ off the legal field of play for a while, and really felt as though it could have been cut completely and not really detracted all that much from the plot。 Possibly this plot thread is going to really heat up in later books in the series。Now I’m going to come to what really made me feel uncomfortable about this book, and it’s this: in a book which references To Kill A Mockingbird and the fraught history of Pulaski, in which the lead character, a Black man, has witnessed lynchings of family members and is now representing a Black teenager accused of killing his Black girlfriend in front of an almost entirely white jury… I’m uncomfortable that the author is white。 This feels like a story that isn’t his to tell。 It’s delving into Black history and trauma of Black people in the South both past and present, and a white author monetizing that feels very icky to me。 I’m not saying that you should never write characters outside of your own racial background。 Just that maybe we should be conscious that some stories aren’t ours to tell, and I think this is one of them。It’s a well written story; I’ll give it four stars for execution, but my discomfort on discovering that the author is white means I will be avoiding his work in the future。Disclaimer: I received a review copy of this title via NetGalley。 。。。more

Robert Bailey is one of my favorite writers! B-I normally love Bailey's novel, but very ambiguous about this one。 The main reason is it was way too wordy。 It seemed like he was trying to fill 300 pages。 Also, if you hadn't read the previous 2 books it will be difficult to fill in the blanks。 All in all it was a typical novel about Black athlete accused of murder。 Been there done that B-I normally love Bailey's novel, but very ambiguous about this one。 The main reason is it was way too wordy。 It seemed like he was trying to fill 300 pages。 Also, if you hadn't read the previous 2 books it will be difficult to fill in the blanks。 All in all it was a typical novel about Black athlete accused of murder。 Been there done that 。。。more

Good legal mystery with great setting in small Southern town。 The local football hero is accused of killing his girlfriend, the local teen singing sensation, about to leave town and hit the big time。 There are more plausible killers with reasons to resent girlfriend’s sudden success than one would imagine in such a small town and it’s a delight to learn each of their stories。 This is a multi-layered tale with more secrets than one could possible imagine。 It’s a fast moving story not to be missed Good legal mystery with great setting in small Southern town。 The local football hero is accused of killing his girlfriend, the local teen singing sensation, about to leave town and hit the big time。 There are more plausible killers with reasons to resent girlfriend’s sudden success than one would imagine in such a small town and it’s a delight to learn each of their stories。 This is a multi-layered tale with more secrets than one could possible imagine。 It’s a fast moving story not to be missed。 I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley。 。。。more

This book is very well written, has great characters, and is very entertaining despite the very slow story。 The murder happens 16% into the book, and the main character agrees to be the defendant's lawyer after 60%(!)。 That's incredibly slow。I also feel that the notion of the public and the prosecution jumping to conclusions is getting a little old。 Haven't people gotten any smarter? Nothing points to any other suspects。 Right or wrong Bo has to make a decision that may just end his own career。The Wrong Side is in the hands of the talented Robert Bailey who brings the character of Bocephus Haynes to life front and center。 Bo has made a multitude of mistakes in his life and almost lost custody of his own children。 But you couldn't ask for a steadier hand than Bo's。 Bailey inserts rich dialogue that commands attention and leaves the reader sitting up straighter。 Real, raw, and human。 The Wrong Side tips the scales with a very original and very deeply drawn main character as Bocephus Haynes。I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review。 My thanks to Thomas & Mercer and to Robert Bailey for the opportunity。 。。。more

Bo Takes On a Case With a Less Than Poor OutlookAfter a short prologue that reveals that the relationship between the District Attorney General, Helen Lewis, and local businessman, Mikael Zannick, has not improved since the end of the first novel, this novel opens just before a major Giles County High School football game against their rival Tullahoma。 The Giles County star running back and outside linebacker, Odell Champagne, is meeting with his girlfriend, Brittany Crutcher, who was on America Bo Takes On a Case With a Less Than Poor OutlookAfter a short prologue that reveals that the relationship between the District Attorney General, Helen Lewis, and local businessman, Mikael Zannick, has not improved since the end of the first novel, this novel opens just before a major Giles County High School football game against their rival Tullahoma。 The Giles County star running back and outside linebacker, Odell Champagne, is meeting with his girlfriend, Brittany Crutcher, who was on American Idol and is the lead singer of the Fizz who will perform after the game。 Brittany seems a little cool, but Odell must get to the locker room。 Odell has the best game of his life after which he reads a note slipped into his locker。 Brittany is leaving tomorrow without him for LA。 Just before sun rises on Saturday, Brittany’s body is discovered in a school bus yard。The main storyline proceeds with the investigation starting with a drunken Odell found sleeping off a drunk a few hundred yards away with the apparent murder weapon not far away。 Several threads make up the main storyline。 The investigation that keeps finding more and more of inculpatory evidence。 The only bump in the way of prosecuting steam roller is that Helen Lewis takes a leave of absence。 Odell wants Bocephus “Bo” Haynes to defend him but Bo is leery。 This thread turns into “Bo” and his private investigator, Albert Hooper, try to find any exculpatory evidence。 The author kept the edge on by playing the progress of the prosecution against the very slow progress of the defense。 My attention was quickly captured and held tightly all the way to end。 Similar to the first novel in the series, the B-storyline is rich and extensive。 The author uses Bo’s interaction with all the major characters from the first novel to reveal Bo’s character quite well。 Of interest is a new character, Israel Crutcher, Brittany’s father。 He was on the Giles County High School football team with Bo。 Since that day, there has been bad blood between them。 This thread provides a very poignant aspect to the B- and main storylines。 The richness of the novel and my reading enjoyment was enhanced by these B-storyline threads。For the usual aspects that some readers find objectionable, this novel is remarkably clean。 There are references but no actual initiate scenes。 Vulgar and rude language is minimal along with violence。 There is teenage drinking。 This is the second book in this series, I did not find any aspect that wasn’t backfilled adequately。 A reader should be able to read this book first。 I do recommend reading the first novel first, but that is not necessary in my opinion。Overall, this novel was an easy read, and the story keep my interest and literally compelled me to continue reading。 There were not any loose threads by the end。 If the teaser write-up for this novel interests you, I strongly recommend reading this novel。 The only downsides were a very minor police procedural error, and, it appears, that this is the last novel in this series。 I would like to see more novels。 I after reading both novels, completed the purchase of all four novels in the author’s previous series。 A testament to the quality of this author’s writing。 Finally, I rate this novel with five stars。I received a free e-book version of this novel through NetGalley from Thomas & Mercer with an expectation for an honest, unbiased review。 I wish to thank Thomas & Mercer for the opportunity to read and review this novel early。 。。。more
