Summary

The Havath Dominion is marching to war。

Humiliated in the ruins of Imperial Ithos, the Exile Splinter stolen from their grasp by the ancient sphinx Kanderon Crux, Havath's Duarchs have assembled an army that dwarfs the entire population of Skyhold。 Led by their Great Powers, monsters and mages individually capable of leveling a city, they pose a threat that even Kanderon, one of the mightiest of Great Powers, and her equally monstrous allies might be unable to stop。

As the Havathi forces push closer and closer to Skyhold, Hugh and his friends train relentlessly, hoping to make a difference in the oncoming siege。 While they venture into dangerous realms of untested experimental magic, though, they're already caught up in currents far beyond their control。

Once you're a pawn in the games of the Great Powers, there's no escape。

Excellent book 5。 It definitely tops all the Mage Errant books out so far。 The siege is just as juicy as it gets。 We get to see different battles from different POV。 Our protagonists have also levelled up accordingly with some very interesting new moves (I absolutely love Hugh's)。 And we get to see Talia's family, which is just as chaotic and fun, but amazing as I thought it'd be。The only thing that distracts from all is the random flirting and romance between some of the protagonists and the no Excellent book 5。 It definitely tops all the Mage Errant books out so far。 The siege is just as juicy as it gets。 We get to see different battles from different POV。 Our protagonists have also levelled up accordingly with some very interesting new moves (I absolutely love Hugh's)。 And we get to see Talia's family, which is just as chaotic and fun, but amazing as I thought it'd be。The only thing that distracts from all is the random flirting and romance between some of the protagonists and the not-so-important characters (who only show up in 1 book or on several pages)。 I understand teens do talk about romance quite often, but here it doesn't really add to the characters and their growth at all。 It feels like your average filler material。 I hope this will get toned down in future books as the ending looms。 。。。more

7/25/21: 4 stars。 This book took me way too long to read, mostly because of a long 2 month long reading slump。 I didn’t enjoy this one as much as 3-4, because 3-4 did a lot of character work while this one mostly focused on magic mechanics and preparations for the final battle, which weren’t as interesting to me。 I think there was a missed opportunity to use this book to dig deeply into Godrick’s character for spoiler reasons, so that was a bit disappointing。 Still, the character dynamics, espec 7/25/21: 4 stars。 This book took me way too long to read, mostly because of a long 2 month long reading slump。 I didn’t enjoy this one as much as 3-4, because 3-4 did a lot of character work while this one mostly focused on magic mechanics and preparations for the final battle, which weren’t as interesting to me。 I think there was a missed opportunity to use this book to dig deeply into Godrick’s character for spoiler reasons, so that was a bit disappointing。 Still, the character dynamics, especially every single sentence uttered by Talia, saved the first 2/3 of the book for me from dragging too much。 It should’ve been more concise, but it was still fun。The ending though, holy crap。 Okay so, first of all, the ending battle did not make the best first impression on me。 I don’t like cutting away to POVs we haven’t had earlier in the story just in climactic battles, and Bierce loves doing that, and this is the longest climactic battle he’s written thus far so of course it’s gonna have a lot of that。BUT! Then he started being ruthless。 He killed some characters。 He gave some scary character moments to some of our mains。 He did some REALLY cool things with those POV switches。 He did some really cool magic twists。 And in the end, he pulled off one of the coolest end twists I’ve seen in a fantasy book EVER! That ending is fantastic and I encourage people to push through some of the less interesting parts of the book to get to the ending。Overall, I’d give the first 2/3 of the book 3 stars—not bad, but could be a lot better。 The last 1/3 is 5 stars overall。 And if picking between 3 and 4 stars, I’m gonna pick 4 stars based solely on the ending twist。 Fantastic payoff for several books of buildup。 。。。more

This is my least favorite book of the series so far。 The first half of the book was pretty slow and didn't really grab my interest。 And then the pacing was pretty bad in the last third of the book。 But then the ending made it even worse - something came completely out of left field without any foreshadowing or hints, which made it felt like the author just did it to try and make the reader gasp。 It felt like a throwaway direction to take the book。 I'm not going to continue reading this series - This is my least favorite book of the series so far。 The first half of the book was pretty slow and didn't really grab my interest。 And then the pacing was pretty bad in the last third of the book。 But then the ending made it even worse - something came completely out of left field without any foreshadowing or hints, which made it felt like the author just did it to try and make the reader gasp。 It felt like a throwaway direction to take the book。 I'm not going to continue reading this series - it's been pretty average overall, but I'm not interested in dedicating any more time to it。 。。。more

The hest yetWell worth a read。 This installment to the Mage Errant series is much less pedantic and repetitive, full of action too。

A Betrayal Most FoulReally loved this book。 It built on the previous 4 and allowed the characters to become more real。 The story has several twists in it that I really did not see coming。 Highly recommend reading。

Keeping everyone on edgeI loved this book more than the fourth one。 It was fast paced and with amazing character building。 The ending keeps everyone on edge。 I hope the next book comes along quickly。

Amazing as always。 This is by far the best of the series with heart wrenching twists and turns。 Can’t wait to read the 6th one。 John… just know that you’re amazing at worldbuilding and that your long nights of research pay off with this book。 🐸🥰

Richard

Some sad moments, and a slightly unexpected twist。 This is really setting up for the last 2 books in the series and a major story scope expansion。 I hope it pays off - but the story itself continues to be a great read

Zack

Great series so far。 Can’t wait for the next 2Legit read the first 5 books back to back in a week。 Was to good to put down。 Definitely a must read for anyone into lit rpgs, or cultivation type series。

I love this series, and thoroughly enjoy the cool new ways of thinking about magic it employs。 Kind of the same vibe as Brandon Sanderson but on a much smaller scale。 Really fun。

Fantastic This was the best book in the series and it’s not even close。 The author improved in every aspect by leaps and bounds。 Massive plot twists but not a fan of the very last one。

John

Amazing continuation of a great seriesGood build up and culmination, did not enjoy the ending as much but i can understand the reasoning behind it

Tamara

A LOT happens here。 And I mean a lot。 Well, especially at the end of the book。 I enjoyed this one more than 3 and 4, but 1 and 2 are still better。 But I am looking forward to where the story is headed towards。

10/10I really like d the story the plot and the cliff hanger as well as some unexpected plot twists。 My only complaint is the gay parts like boy on boy or girl on girl。 :)

Good book overall。 There are some plot twist that seem insensible to me in the setting of the story, but nothing to glaring。

Well I'm a bit late to the review party on this one, but I'll briefly note my thoughts for posterity。 I would give this a solid 3。5 stars; definitely one of the better entries in the series。 As a young adult book it still suffers from some of the philosophy and social interactions feeling, well, young adult-ish, but I do feel like things were a bit more fleshed out and less two dimensional than in previous entries in this series。 Lots of fantastic magical action at the end, and some great plot a Well I'm a bit late to the review party on this one, but I'll briefly note my thoughts for posterity。 I would give this a solid 3。5 stars; definitely one of the better entries in the series。 As a young adult book it still suffers from some of the philosophy and social interactions feeling, well, young adult-ish, but I do feel like things were a bit more fleshed out and less two dimensional than in previous entries in this series。 Lots of fantastic magical action at the end, and some great plot and character development as well。 As someone who enjoys progression fantasy I hate to gripe about the progression, but that is my only issue of real significance。 The main characters seem to have grown disproportionately powerful over just a few years, and somehow everyone they end up fighting is either inordinately weak or inordinately dumb。 They are obviously elite students with uniquely powerful skillsets, but a group of students with only two or three years of training consistently and repeatedly beating mages with decades of experience pushes the limits of what I'm willing to believe。 Additionally, given the author's planned timeline of seven books and the stakes that are being hinted with this book, I'm concerned about the main characters being able to realistically acquire enough power to resolve the plot in the books remaining。 Anyway, I still plan to read the later books when they release, I'd still recommend that people who enjoy progression fantasy at least try this series, and if you even somewhat enjoyed the previous books in the series I would recommend continuing with this entry。 。。。more

Loved the book hated the endingSo far have really enjoyed the series and up until the last few chapters this was my favorite book in the series。 The world that has been created is fascinating and the characters are complex enough for a young adult novel that the ending disappointed me。 I'm hoping the next book in the series will justify some of the abrupt consequences of the ending but I may have to accept it was done more for the drama of the moment than tracking what we know about the characte Loved the book hated the endingSo far have really enjoyed the series and up until the last few chapters this was my favorite book in the series。 The world that has been created is fascinating and the characters are complex enough for a young adult novel that the ending disappointed me。 I'm hoping the next book in the series will justify some of the abrupt consequences of the ending but I may have to accept it was done more for the drama of the moment than tracking what we know about the characters I've come to enjoy。 Definitely still recommend this book and the series in general! 。。。more

Greatest oneGreatest book of this series。。。 So far。 Most action-packed, dynamic and heartbreaking, most interesting。。。 And most fulfilling。 Aaaand also with the greatest cliffhanger。

EngagedI read through this series up to book 5 in just a few days。 Lots of borrowed ideas while making a completely new story with some interesting turns。 Really my only want is the series to continue so I can finish the story!

Hard but Entertaining This story of a world with Greater powers vying for control over the continent was a very harsh and gritty series Even though the MC is going to a Mage school his teachers continue to put him and his friends on the front lines。 I didn’t enjoy the cliffhanger but I can’t wait for the next book。

I don't mind the all the focus on LGBT relationships, though it's honestly not my cup of tea。 What I do mind however is when relationships feel forced and don't have any impact on the plot whatsoever。 The relationships simply get brought up ever few pages for the sake of reminding you that X person in fact still has a crush on Y。 It simply gets tiring after a while and I had to stop reading about 70% through the book。 I simply did not care about the side characters and the author did not care to I don't mind the all the focus on LGBT relationships, though it's honestly not my cup of tea。 What I do mind however is when relationships feel forced and don't have any impact on the plot whatsoever。 The relationships simply get brought up ever few pages for the sake of reminding you that X person in fact still has a crush on Y。 It simply gets tiring after a while and I had to stop reading about 70% through the book。 I simply did not care about the side characters and the author did not care to develop them and make me care for them。 。。。more

Another pretty good entry。Decent banter and character development amongst the main cast。 Some fun battle scenes。It did seem to meander a bit towards the middle。 And there were some things which happened at the end which happened more 'BECAUSE PLOT NEEDS TO GO THIS WAY' rather than because of logical character development。 I'm not sold on them yet。 I may tolerate them, I may end up hating them。 Another pretty good entry。Decent banter and character development amongst the main cast。 Some fun battle scenes。It did seem to meander a bit towards the middle。 And there were some things which happened at the end which happened more 'BECAUSE PLOT NEEDS TO GO THIS WAY' rather than because of logical character development。 I'm not sold on them yet。 I may tolerate them, I may end up hating them。 。。。more
